Transformers: Prime The Game - 3DS review

So far it's enjoyable for what it is. I normally play more retro looking games on handhelds so a game trying to pull off full 3D models looks a little low res compared to the PS4. But I'm not a graphics whore, it's just been a while and the textures were very low res.

Anyways, I was greeted with the following image when I booted up. So my first impressions were very high.

Image

Coolest game icon as of yet. The top screen is a nice looking 3D model of OP. Make noise in the mic and like other games he spins around.

Ok booted up the game and to my surprise there was full voice acting. I was pretty sure it was the original cast. I verified via IMDB, AWESOME!

So far so good. I expected the first stage to be the obligatory tutorial stage. I just finished level 4 and I still feel like the game is teaching me how to play. On each stage so far, you get to play as one of the main bots (OP, Arcee, Bulkhead, Bee; in that order). I won't spoil the story to explain why (not that it would make a difference). Each bot has a different feel. Arcee and Bee are fast and OP and Bulkhead are slow, but powerful. I would say Bulk feels slower and seems to hit harder.

The stages so far are pretty straight forward and linear. Move forward, hit gate, kill various vehicons, drop gate, rinse and repeat until you hit a boss. I would like a more open and longer levels, but I have lower expectations on mobile. And action games hurt my old hands on portables.

On Bee's level you get to do a little crisscrossing, but only the way they let you.

The game plays somewhat similar to WfC/FoC. You can transform at a press of a button and rush the enemies to pop out and start melee combat. There is a mix of ranged, melee and vehicle combat. Some stages are a timed get out of dodge affair and you have to shoot rocks from vehicle mode. You can used ranged attack in vehicle mode at all times. You can also build up a special meter to have your character go into a berserk like mode to do more damage.

The game plays quick and is a lot of fun once I wrapped my head around the combat. It does a good job of forcing you to use all of the tools at your disposal.

You mostly fight vehicons, but they come in a few different flavors. Normal, air, heli & tank. So far all the bosses have been named characters from the show and they talk trash during the fight. Starscream's giggle was especially enjoyable and annoying

The cut scenes and acting are on par with the show and quite frankly, this could be just another episode.

According to the internet there are 13 stages and plenty of collectibles to find. I wouldn't have wanted to pay much more than I did for it, but if you can pick it up for under $10 I would highly recommend it. I would even say up to $15.

Of what little I've played; I give it :BOT: :BOT: :BOT: 1/2 out of 5 insignias

itscramtastic wrote:Picked up Need for Speed Most Wanted U on the Wii U the other day, when I cancelled my XB1 Forza 6 Console pre-order. I then paid off my pre-order of Super Mario Maker as well! :-D

And right now I'm playing "Drift Spirits" on my iPhone. I miss Initial D in the arcade so much!! :-(

The last racing game that hooked me in was Burnout Paradise. I've been jonesing for a new racing game but nothing has come along lately that piques my interest. I think I own NFS MW on PS3. If I remember correctly it was made by Criterion Games, the same team behind the Burnout series.

The cops were bringing me down and I probably was playing way to many other games at the time.

I've enjoyed more realistic games like Gran Tourismo before, but I tend to gravitate towards more an arcade experience like Burnout. I'm also a "lifelong" fan of the Wipeout series. I've spent a pretty good amount of time with cart racers as well.

I know we are on different platforms, but got any racing recomendations?

Hmm. Racing recommendations.

Well, Gran Tourismo is still a year away for the PS4 at least (I'm guessing Q4 2016) but there IS a NEW Need for Speed coming out in the next month or so on PS4 (you have one right?)!!! I've been a NFS fan since I got my first Mad Catz wheel for my PSX back in the mid 90s. I also had the Saturn wheel for playing Sega Rally Championship and Daytona USA on the Saturn...ugh I miss all of that.

If you've been a fan of Burnout (my favorite was 3: Takedown on PS2 from 2003/04) then NFSMW is right up your alley. I feel like it plays like that game, except with cops and licensed cars. I had a 3 hour session with it last night driving around, finding cars, being reckless, racing like crazy, I literally felt like it was 12 years ago I was having so much fun!!

As far as NFS goes I only ever got into the original Hot Pursuit on PSX.

I'm not a wheel guy, I'm cool with a controller.

Current consoles are PS3, PS4, Vita and 3DS.

I'll have to set my PS3 to DL NSF:MW and give it another chance.

I just want to give Daytona USA a shout out. I used to burn that game up!

And with that said:

Daytona U.S.A., Sega Rally Championship, Outrun, F355 Challenge, Initial D, Crazy Taxi. All amazing arcade driving games made by SEGA. Time to fire up the Dreamcast..

On GT and Forza, the wheel (done right) adds just that little extra realism or arcade feel the the controller lacks. I'm fine with one though, haven't had a wheel in a long time.

I did pick up the Outrun 3D Classic remake on the 3DS eShop. So much fun! So much better on the *new* 3DS XL :D (gyro controls!!!!!)

I eyeballed that Outrun 3D when it was released. SEGA indeed used to rule the racing scene.

Speaking of SEGA and the 3DS; 3D Space Harrier.

Here is a fun fact, this is not the first 3D Space Harrier released.

And they just released 3D Gunstar Heroes on the 3DS.

Its a good time to be a SEGA fan.

I just found that Daytona USA is on the PSN.

Don't resist! They are a few bucks a piece, and you'll always have them whenever you want to drop in/out for a quick gaming session.

I had the HD remakes of Daytona USA and OutRun, and picked up the newer Sega Rally Online on XB360 when I had that system..man I love those games.

I've never actually played Space Harrier (shocking, I know) so I think I'll have to pick that up. I also picked up After Burner II 3D and Super Hang-On when they were released. I might as well just buy whatever Sega 3D Classics I don't have. I won't be disappointed I'm sure :-D

If I ever make a game room, it'll most likely be filled with Sega arcade games. And Capcom. Maybe Namco. Dang video games

Dope! Now hook it up sans animal crossing and they'll have my full attention.

As far as video games blogs go I get my info primarily from www.destructoid.com and the PlayStation blog. I haunt a few other sites but those are where I hang out the most.

Happy 20th PlayStation

Postby no-one » Wed Sep 09, 2015 11:44 am

Jeez I'm getting old. It's hard to believe that 20 years ago today the PlayStation launched in the US.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2015/09/ ... o-today-2/

To answer their question: playing them launch games and trying to wrap my head around navigating in 3D. I don't if games have gotten smarter or if I've just gotten used to it. Either way; it's second nature now.

I wouldn't mind firing up some PSOne classics tonight, but like a dummy I'm out of town sans my Vita :HEADHURTS:

Wait, what? 16 years ago the Dreamcast launched in the U.S. Yeah, that's right, 9/9/99 :)

I was there man! First system/games I ever pre-ordered! Wasn't the first system or games I bought with my own money from working, but the first one I was ever super excited about to pre-order

Ah the Dreamcast; the little system that never did. The only fond memory I can think of is unlocking everything (well almost evevrything) in Soul Caliber.

Other than that it was mostly over hyped disappointment. Maybe someone can remind me of something awesome that I'm forgetting... :-?

From what I understand, it had a great library for fighting games if you're into that sort of thing.

In all seriousness, I think my favorite title on the ill fated Dreamcast was RE: Code Veronica.

Someone could probably make a good argument for Shenmue though, but I never could get into it.

In all honesty, this still gives me goosebumps.

How about the ability to select your play via the VMU in the NFL 2K series?! That was AWESOME!! Pretty sure the Madden series doesn't have that option yet, other than customizing your team or whatever (you can't just pick up and play and have your selection hidden).

Still have Soul Caliber, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and Power Stone. As well as Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Daytona USA, Sega Rally Championship, NFL/NBA/NCAA/MLB 2K/1/2 (depending on the game).

I still prefer the 2K sports series over the EA games, and we wouldn't have them if it wasn't for the Dreamcast :)

Also, I almost posted that Dreamcast intro a few weeks ago when we were posting start-up screens Cary

You should have,I love boot screens.

Yeah the VMUs were pretty neat. I used to train my chaos with them.

I used to own a PS Pocket, but so few games were compatible. It was a niffty little trinket to own though.

EDIT: Hey check it out! Destructoid did a 3 sentence article on the Dreamcast's 16 bday.

I've been avoiding reading anything about that like the plague. It will give me a bad case of the WiiU wants. Looks right up my ally though. I was a bit of an obsessive LittleBigPlanet player for a while.

For example, this be's my 3 week labor of love. Built in the original LBP before it got all fancy.

And speaking of creative type games. I picked up Minecraft for the Vita at Target on clearance about a week ago. I know its kinda crazy I haven't played this game until now. I'm just learning how to play, but it's pretty cool. I've put a little time in Terraria as well, so the minecraft rules aren't really foreign to me.

I never played LBP, it looks pretty awesome based on the video :) I've made three levels in SMM so far. My wife even plays it with me! It's the coolest. Had some hang-out time with some friends the other day, they hated me at first (for my levels) and then were like "pretty easy, not bad, airship?!" (which is what the levels are actually named ). You can't go wrong with the Wii U, unless you like non-Nintendo games.

To answer my own question; a lot of Bravely Default on 3DS actually. I mean a lot. Check out that play clock.

Image

I've been grinding levels for what feels like months now and popping into the story every now and then. I think I'm going take a break for a bit.

I found something a little interesting for under $5 today in the used bin. Let's see what we have here.

Image

A TF flavored turn based strategy game? Well, well then. Only about 4 of 32 missions in. Kinda neat, a bit of a light weight game (characters don't level), I can find upgraded items to equip and new bots for my team. Nice so far.

I'm liking all the pixel art that Wayforward used. I'm not feeling the bayverse bots though :michaelbay: or the QTE part in the fight scenes. EDIT: At mission five the game moves to Cybertron and uses a WfC style. So earth is movieverse style and Cyberton is WfC style, cool.

This is a nice lil $5 distraction. Very similar to a TF mobile game I played 5-6 years ago. Speaking of which, I wish that TF: Earth Wars mobile game would go ahead and become available in the US already. Looks pretty cool. Not an easy app to find in the Play store. Good thing I put it on my wishlist. Here is a link if you're curious.

Bravely Default.

More like "Bravely occupies all of Cary's time".

AmIright?!

I haven't played a good JRPG in a while. I just can't find the time to immerse myself. Xenoblade Chronicles X for the Wii U looks pretty awesome.

In other news I do have Rise of the Dark Spark on Wii U. Pre-ordered it and got the cool poster with it too. I do like the play style, switching back and forth between WfC/FoC and Earth based combat.

It took a while for BD job system to click, but once it did... it got its hooks in me real good. Reminds me of FFVI espir system and various other GF job systems. It's a lot of fun finding the super powerful mix and match abilities.

That Xenochronicles game on 3DS has my attention, but doesn't work on the old 3DS.I haven't played a Xeno game since PSone.

Me and JRPGs go way back, back when they were just RPGs. Cut my teef on FF1 and Dragon Warrior on the NES and I've been playing them off and on ever since.

Hit the Western RPGs pretty hard for a while on the last generation.

I've been suggesting to get the *new* 3DS but you haven't! :-D You can also pick up the Wind Waker Wii U while you're at it and get the other new Xenoblade game :-D
