Your TF and Collecting History

Postby TF-fan kev777 » Sun Jan 07, 2018 6:57 am

I've been thinking of starting a thread like this for awhile and haven't seen an established one yet, kind of like a get to know your fellow Sibertronians topic.

I've thought of a few basic questions as starters and we'll see where things go from there. Feel free to add any other good questions as we go. If the thread stays strong and active, I'll try to edit the initial post to add any other good questions, but certainly elaborate on whatever you feel necessary to accurately describe your collecting habits.

Feel free to answer each question individually, in groups, or all in one big run-on sentence, whatever works for you.

I'm assuming most of us fell in love with TF's as a child and are currently collecting as adults, so my questions are assuming this. If you don't fit this description, just answer the best you can.

So without further ado, here we go: I'll put my answers in the first reply on this thread.

1) When did you first fall in love with transformers and how long did it last? Basically what was your very first entry point into the franchise, and how long did you stay interested as a kid prior to collecting as an adult. (I'm totally jealous of anyone that never stopped from childhood to adulthood.)

2) What brought you back into collecting? Assuming you stopped at some point in your childhood and came back as an adult, what was it that pulled you back in?

3) What are your current collecting preferences? What lines are you into, what lines just aren't for you? What is most important to you on a particular toy (character, transformation, deco, etc.)

4) What is your current favorite toy/figure? I know it is nearly impossible, but try to narrow it down to 1 if you can. I would completely consider things like boxed sets as a single item, so there is a sort of built in cheat there.

5) Which figure is "the one that got away"? I mean the figure you passed on initially or sold off, or maybe even missed out on if you weren't collecting, and now regret not pulling the trigger, keeping it or hunting one down.

6) Where is the most unexpected place you bought a transformer?

As promised, here are my answers. I look forward to hearing everyone else's experiences.

1) My entry point to TF was at the beginning in ’84. However, my initial run with TF’s was actually pretty short, just 1-2 years before G.I.Joe took over a majority of my interest. My dad just didn’t get transformers, but being a veteran (Viet Nam) G.I.Joe was right up his alley, which is probably why I gravitated toward it and away from TF’s as a kid. I also had only the TV cartoon to go by as I wasn’t into comics at all.

Heck, here will probably be a shocker to most fans: I still haven’t seen TF the movie. At all. And, I don’t really have much interest in seeing it now. I mean, the story is great and I already know most of what happened just from reading the forums over the years. But we are still talking mid-80’s animation, so no thanks, not really interested. That means I’ve basically missed all of cybertron, beast wars, armada and anything else post TFTM.

2) I’ve actually had 2 re-entries back into collecting. The first time was with the 2007 movie. My oldest daughter was about 4 at the time and while walking through the toy section 2007 Barricade caught her eye for some reason (I have no idea what about that figure caught her eye, I wasn’t even interested in them at all at this point.) She was really interested to know more about transformers once I told her that I played with some as a kid, and I let her talk me into buying Barricade (with Frenzy). We both loved the figure right away, but it took me a couple weeks to fill her in that he was a bad guy. I felt bad, she assumed that a cop car had to be a good guy. From there I started collecting the movie line, and then the universe line. This lasted until Dark of the Moon came out and my oldest 2 daughters weren’t interested that much anymore. So we set one last up a huge battle in the basement and then sold the collection off.

They were both really into legos at that point. So the original Kreo transformers was like a pseudo collection for me at that point.

Then Combiner Wars happened, and I was right back into collecting big time and still am, with or without the kids. My youngest 2 are actually into them with me now.

3) For my current colleting, the generations line is definitely the line for me. RID just never really spoke to me, and I prefer the generations styling more than the movieverse styling. I would consider myself “G1-ish” in that I prefer keeping the original characters somewhat accurate to their original selves, but am not specifically tied to any cartoon, comic or toy accuracy. I’m also very open to characters from other original lines (energon, armada, beast wars) being brought into the generations line. The more, the merrier to me.

I am also somewhat of a completionist, which is going to be put to the test for PotP, with neither of the first 2 leaders really doing much for me.

4) Wow it is really hard to pick just one, but I think I have a winner. Megatronia. I know this is a sort-of cheat, since it is a combiner, but it is the combiner and the UW magna behind them that I just love. Giving Megatron a wife and 4 other prominent Decepticons girlfriends/fan girls/partners was pretty genius. I also love the blending of the 4 card suits for the limb-bot’s names, and the 4 orignal elements for their weapon powers. Just some really neat backstory for them. I’ve even customized my CW Wreck-Gar with a couple Decepticon toyhax stickers and made him into Jester, Megatronia’s bra/chest armor in combined form, and the toady/lackey of the 5 fem-bots in bot form, always having to clean up and store their weapons for them, make dinner, etc.

5) For me, I have most of what I’ve wanted from Thrilling to present day. So for me the one that got away would be Takara Lynx Master, or more specifically Ratchet from that set, since I have the Hasbro version with Smokescreen. It is really a shame that Hasbro only had CW Ratchet as a Botcon custom class figure. Who, knows, with shuttle Blast Off as a future possibility, maybe we can get a Ratchet re-release in the future too? (Yeah, I won’t hold my breath though.)

6) The most unexpected place I bought a TF was actually at a little toy shop inside Kuala Lumpur International Airport, where I found Takara Legends Slipstream for $30 USD. I’m actually kicking myself for not getting Nightbird and Black Arachnia at the same time because the same store was closed and turned into something else on my next trip there.

Motto: "No matter where you go, there you are."
1) When did you first fall in love with transformers and how long did it last? Basically what was your very first entry point into the franchise, and how long did you stay interested as a kid prior to collecting as an adult.

I was right there as a child with G1 in the 80's. I recall watching the show and owning the toys. I might have been a bit late out of the gate, as I don't specifically remember owning of the '84 toys, although my memory is a bit hazy there. I definitely remember owning some '85 toys, and also remember owning some Micromasters, so I was definitely there for most of G1. I didn't own any Action Masters, but if I naturally had just fallen away by then, or if the god forsaken consept of Transformers that didn't transform turned me away, I couldn’t say.

2) What brought you back into collecting? Assuming you stopped at some point in your childhood and came back as an adult, what was it that pulled you back in?

I think I started feeling a bit of nostalgia around the turn of the century. I recall picking up a few Robots in Disguise (Car Robots) figures on a lark. The big turning point, however, had to be Classics in 2006. I started going strong and haven't looked back!

3) What are your current collecting preferences? What lines are you into, what lines just aren't for you? What is most important to you on a particular toy (character, transformation, deco, etc.)

My collection is still largely "Classics" based. (Never cared for the "CHUG" moniker.) I'm basically trying to recreate a G1 collection with modern toys.

I also have a large collection of Optimus Primes. I know it’s cliché, but I like the character and having different toys of him. Similarly, I happen to have a small collection of Rodimuses, but that collection happened almost accidentally.

Finally, I do own a few Masterpieces, but nothing more recent than Soundwave. I really love what is going on right now with Masterpiece, but between their cost and size, and how deep I am into my Classics collection, switching gears completely right now just is not in the cards. So I mostly admire them online.

4) What is your current favorite toy/figure? I know it is nearly impossible, but try to narrow it down to 1 if you can. I would completely consider things like boxed sets as a single item, so there is a sort of built in cheat there.

That's a bit tough to say. Possibly my MP-10 Optimus Prime, but my Legends God Ginrai certainly has that lovely "New Toy" allure still going on.

5) Which figure is "the one that got away"? I mean the figure you passed on initially or sold off, or maybe even missed out on if you weren't collecting, and now regret not pulling the trigger, keeping it or hunting one down.

For me, the one(s) that got away have to be my entire childhood collection. I made the foolish mistake of being a child at the time, and actually playing with them and such. Some didn't survive the process, and I don't know what may have happened to the others. (My parents aren't the sort to throw them out on me.)

But man... some in particular, like Jetfire... Ah well, I have some lovely Macross VF-1 Valkyries, including a (non-super armored) reissue of the 80's toy, but I'm unlikely to ever have that lovely white and red Auto bot branded version of that toy again.

6) Where is the most unexpected place you bought a transformer?

I was driving to New York to spend a lovely weekend in a cabin with some family. Popped into a dollar type store to pick up a few things the woman I was dating at the time forgot to pack. Happened to spot a Legends Cliffjumper there, so I added him to my collection.

Ok, interesting, let's do it.
As always, english is not my native language so sorry if sometimes unclear.

Child as many of us. However, living in france we've been a bit offset in time as most of europe.
I didn't got many as a child, only 6; Snarl, Motormaster, DeadEnd, Joyride, Snaptrap and Action Master Optimus (who was my holy grail back in time). + some micromasters.

I stopped playing with them when going to high school, but they weren't far away.

TF-fan kev777 wrote:2) What brought you back into collecting? Assuming you stopped at some point in your childhood and came back as an adult, what was it that pulled you back in?

Moving to a new appartment in a new city, for work, alone. Being a bit bored, I bought a 5€ KO while shopping in the grocery.
And it's how I fell back in. I brought back the old ones from parent's home and started to have a look on internet to see how to get more, and that's how I discovered TF still existed and hsow running.

It was in 2004, end of Armada and begining of Energon. Before the movie so all of this was quite inexistant here, I watched Energon in English and found max 2 TF at retail, everything else was purchased from ebay and BBTS. (to give you an example of poor coverage, Armada Optimus was never released here).

If I don't count the KO, my first TF of the adult period is him :

scream-armed-full.jpg
scream-armed-full.jpg (29.31 KiB) Viewed 45099 times

He still has a reserved place on my shelves and I still find him something special that others even from this period do not have. I think it's the mix of transparent plastic, the colors etc.
I wonder what would have happened if I had started with another one. Would I've been back into collecting if I had started with a less good one, like let's say, Energon Hotshot ?

TF-fan kev777 wrote:3) What are your current collecting preferences? What lines are you into, what lines just aren't for you? What is most important to you on a particular toy (character, transformation, deco, etc.)

I've been near completlist for movie 1, but my love for movies toys suddendly dropped off, I'm not sure why. I sold them all, keeping only Optimus. And it's not the latest movie toys with 90% of faux parts and fake chests which will bring me back in.

I would like to love RiD stuff, I love the show and the characters, but the toys are really too basic including the legion ones.

So currently I collect only the "classic-looking" modern TFs. Generations but also includes Unicron trilogy and such.
In fact I've been a bit dormant during the generations stuff, my enthusiasm really came back with CW and TR, which are real complete lines with a theme, gimmick etc, and not random TFs the generation were the previous years.
I hope it'll continue the same after POTP.
Same as you, I'm not specially attached to G1 characters, cartoon accuracy and such, in fact the G1-cartoon-slavery bothers me sometimes (POTP Windcharger and Orion Pax as recent examples), I would welcome new characters like we got during Unicron Trilogy, or import some RiD characters in Generation-like treatment.

I also have a strong preference for Autobots over Decepticons. I know it's stupid, but..

And in order to not be original at all, my preference is Optimus. I even get him from the lines I don't collect. He's somewhat the Hero/Model from my childhood.

According my database here's what my collection looks like :

I would have answered Energon Optimus until recently (yes I assume), but I very recently fall in love with the TR Overlord/SkyShadow mold.
I suppose that when I'll get bored of him, I'll probably go back to Optimus, or Energon Landmine, which always been on my top list.

Because of my inexperience back in time about exclusives and such, I passed the 2006 botcon set.

And I regret it so much. Now it's completely unaffordable.

1 - Watching the cartoon in the 80s. It lasted as long as it was on regular broadcast television.

2 - Always been nostalgic. Around college, I bought some DVDs of the G1 series and the TF Movie. But the toy that actually got me "back" in was the platinum set triple changers. "Back" because I didn't really have that many toys as a kid. That triple changer set was a Prime day special and I totally bought it on impulse. After I got it, I started doing some research and learned that Combiner Wars just started. It snowballed from there.

3 - I'm mainly into Generations, but will also pick up MPs of characters I love. I've really only seen the G1 cartoons and the Japanese G1 continuity, and I only want characters I've seen on the screen. Watched a little of RiD on Netflix but wasn't into it.

4 - MP Grimlock. I've always loved the Dinobots, and always wanted Grimlock as a kid. The MP is simply perfect to me.

5 - Not applicable. I've only started collecting for a few years and basically buy whatever I want since it's not that much.

6 - Not applicable since almost all my purchases are from "regular" retailers. I did pick up Metroplex through the forums, which is probably most unusual for me.

I don't feel like answering the questions as a list, so I'll keep it short and simple.

I started collecting right in '84 with Skywarp. I was only 4 at the time so I didn't really get it at the time, but my older brother got Thundercracker at the same time so it didn't take too long to click with me. At no point did I ever stop buying except for when Hasbro stopped making. I did G1 all the way through, jumped right into G2 with a red Snarl and Yellow Constructicons, then started Beast Wars with the Primal bat/Megatron alligator pack, and just kept going picking up at least a couple figures from every major line including minor lines like Machine Wars and Universe 2003, collector lines like Alternators and Masterpiece, and started dipping into Japanese releases around 2002. Today I mostly collect CHUG, Masterpiece, and whatever else looks good coming out of Japan (mainly Legends), but will pick up an occasional RID or movie figure if I like them enough. My favorite figure, without a doubt is G1 Scorponok. I had to replace the original body from my childhood, but otherwise he's complete. The one that got away was probably Cybertron Leader Megatron or Galvatron, I kept waiting for one to drop in price and they never did.

I've given Va'al enough time to merge the threads if he wants to. I like this kind of topic and I feel it's good to give it a fresh spin for new members so it can stay separate!

1) When did you first fall in love with transformers and how long did it last?
As a kid, probably about 9 years old in the 80's when Transformers first started. I watched the cartoon and got into the Marvel UK comics when I picked up the first issue after stepping out of the cinema after watching the '86 movie.

While I watched other things like Robotech and Voltron (and even had a couple of toys), Transformers were more available in town so those were the toys that got bought.

2) What brought you back into collecting?
Depression. Following the death of my grandmother around the age of 25 I was hit in the face with my own mortality (us young blokes think we're invincible). I'd had (and continue to) depression off and on from my teenage years, but this hit me hard. It was also the time when I was starting to discovery E-Bay and that's where I found old G1 figures. The nostalgia, the fact it brought back memories of a much happier time. It snowballed quickly.

3) What are your current collecting preferences?
At the height of the snowballing I was going Ash Catchem. Collecting every TF I could get my hands on. Then I started running out of space, so I then took the "get all the molds, preferably the first release" approach (foregoing repaints). Continued to run out of space.

So I moved to the "get the ones I like" when it came to the main line releases. Unfortunately, when it came to CW and TR ... I liked a lot. When it came to RID I just wanted to get deluxe versions of the main characters.

Masterpiece however is a different matter, I collect the main G1 stuff (taking a pass on BW simply for monetary and space reasons) but exclude the more obscure releases like Road Rage and Exhaust (who I have no connection to).

I also have a dedicated Optimus Prime/Convoy collection. While I class myself as a "Decepticon", and even though I also consider myself an Ultra Magnus fanboy, Optimus Prime was that childhood idol. He's also had "that look" that hasn't changed much over the years, as opposed to Megatron who seems to be vastly different each new line. The Prime/Convoy collection ranges from a MIB G1 Optimus Prime right up to modern day movie Primes.

Oh yeah, I'm really running low on space ...

4) What is your current favorite toy/figure?
There's no one figure that stands out for me. Not when you've got a bunch of fantastic figures from TR out there!

5) Which figure is "the one that got away"?
I don't recall a figure that I've ever really missed out on. The one that I do want though and I haven't really had a chance is G1 Fire Guts God Ginrai. I have the Powermaster, God Ginrai and Nucleon Quest God Ginrai versions, but the Fire Guts version has yet to join the collection.

6) Where is the most unexpected place you bought a transformer?
I don't think I can really answer this one. I've never run into Transformers in a place I never expected to.

Basically what was your very first entry point into the franchise, and how long did you stay interested as a kid prior to collecting as an adult. (I'm totally jealous of anyone that never stopped from childhood to adulthood.)

2015 and I am still into Transformers. My very first purchase was TFP Ratchet because my friend got me into Prime. I was already in my 20's at the time and had never gotten into Transformers as a kid. (We only had 12 channels and none of them had TF cartoons so don't blame me)

2) What brought you back into collecting? Assuming you stopped at some point in your childhood and came back as an adult, what was it that pulled you back in?

I got into TFs as an adult and never left the fandom.

3) What are your current collecting preferences? What lines are you into, what lines just aren't for you? What is most important to you on a particular toy (character, transformation, deco, etc.)

I am into Combiner Wars, Titans Return and TFP mainly. I am a character collecor, I have to like the character to buy the toy no matter how cool it looks. I am a huge fan of Wheeljack, Ratchet and Soundwave. I am also a fan of fire and rescue vehicles. (I am starting my own ambulance army.)

4) What is your current favorite toy/figure? I know it is nearly impossible, but try to narrow it down to 1 if you can. I would completely consider things like boxed sets as a single item, so there is a sort of built in cheat there.

Oh geez. Uhh, I have been playing with Titans Return Hardhead recently so I will go with him. It changes.

5) Which figure is "the one that got away"? I mean the figure you passed on initially or sold off, or maybe even missed out on if you weren't collecting, and now regret not pulling the trigger, keeping it or hunting one down.

I regret not ordering the Universe Classics Cyclonus I saw for cheap on ebay. Perhaps I will find another.

6) Where is the most unexpected place you bought a transformer?
I usually plan what bots I want and watch reviews before I make a purchase. I'd say that getting TFA Megatron for 5 bucks at a convention was unexpected considering that my friend bought him for me. I'd also say it's unexpected when my Target has anything good.

Had a relatively small collection growing up.

Vividly remember owning:

Optimus Prime
Ultra Magnus
Rodimus Prime
Shrapnel
Jetfire
Dead End
Galvatron
Grotusque

Actually had way more GI Joe toys and Lego sets though. We'd regularly send older/used toys to less fortunate relatives in another country so all of our Transformers made it overseas.

But TF actually stuck around, while GI Joe kinda faded (in my eyes) and Lego got way more into licensing.

Hated the beast forms in Beast Wars (but LOVED the actual cartoon). When Beast Machines hit, I was started to have my own disposable income, I started buying for myself.

Deluxe Jetstorm and Mega Tankor were probably my first purchases on my own. I also started to piece together (a still incomplete) G1 Ultra Magnus from eBay.

From there - it was kind of just "buy whatever looked cool" or buy Ultra Magnus updates and to a lesser extent new Jetfire toys as I had the most attachment to the Ultra Magnus and Jetfire toys I used to have.

I'm probably messing up the order here but:

Energon Battle Ravage
Battle in a Box/Universe Ultra Magnus
RiD Ultra Magnus
Titanium Jetfire
Classics Ultra Magnus
War Within Titanium Ultra Magnus
Alternity Ultra Magnus (which is a double bonus because the Nissan GT-R is my dream car)
DOTM Cyberverse Roadbuster (had to get a set of Wreckers)
DOTM Cyberverse Topspin
DOTM Cyberverse Leadfoot (because I love Target)
Generations Legion Ultra Magnus
Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus

Mentioned it before but I started dropping even more into TF toys after my brother got me Combiner Wars Battle Core Optimus Prime for my birthday. At the same time, I also started getting Rescue Bot toys for my son and holy moly listing out the collection when I was a kid vs. what he has now - huge difference.

Re: Your TF and Collecting History

Postby Bun-Bun » Sun Jan 14, 2018 6:32 am

1) When did you first fall in love with transformers and how long did it last?

Being old as dirt, I was around at the beginning, G1.

I don't think my love of TFs ever really ended but we were occasionally on a break. The first one started somewhere in G2 when the toys became harder to find in my area & I also got to the age where it wasn't cool to play with toys anymore.

2) What brought you back into collecting?

Which time?

As previously stated I've taken many breaks from TF & collecting.

My first soft return was Beast Wars. I had a younger brother the right age for it so I watched the show with him. I'd help him find new toys & play with him. Eventually (somewhere in BM) he moved on and so did I. Unlike me in my G1 days he kept all his figures in relatively good condition and so I packed them away for later. I still have most of them to this day.

The next time I came back was in college. The combination of stress from school and then the shock of 9/11 sent me looking backwards for something happier in my youth. I got online wondering if anybody even remembered Transformers & was shocked to find they did!

Unfortunately I also found eBay & spent myself into an oblivion only to be rivaled by my mortgage & student debt. I think that was around the time Armada was ending & Universe was kind of a thing.

I stuck with collecting all through Energon, Cybertron, Alternators, Classics, etc.

Somewhere in there I had my first kid and between raising him, the movies getting increasingly awful, & the fact the Animated & Prime figures we're not at all my cup of tea, I left again.

Somewhere around the end of Combiner Wars my mind went back to TFs but it wasnt until TR started rolling that I started buying gain.

3) What are your current collecting preference?

I was a CHUGer before CHUG was a thing. :-B

Since my college days my goal has been to buy figures that could stand in for G1 cartoon figures. That has expanded with time including BW, Go-Bots, & obscure character updates... So I was kinda IDW before it was a thing too :-P

4) What is your current favorite toy/figure?

Current?

Currently I am loving the heck out of screwing with PotP Beachcomber & modding Slash.

5) Which figure is "the one that got away"?

Fort Max.

I could not talk my parents into getting him back in the day. But considering the price tag and the way my brother and I abused our stuff then I can understand why not.

I've pretty much scratched that itch with the new TR version though.

6) Where is the most unexpected place you bought a transformer?

How about almost bought?

On my honeymoon, in Disney World's Animal Kingdom. There was a random shop that had a reissue Powermaster Prime with Apex Armor. I couldn't believe it. I had it in my hands, deliberated on it for far longer than I should have, then put it back correctly deciding I did not want to end my honeymoon before it really started.
The opinions expressed in this post are well-reasoned and insightful.
Needless to say, they are not those of SEIBERTRON.COM, its staff members, or any other site lackeys.
Anyone who says otherwise is itching for a fight.

Well, this is going to be interesting! :D
1) When did you first fall in love with transformers and how long did it last?
It was the year 2005. No, really. The energon and cybertron figures were my first transformers growing up, inspired by a friend who had them first. Not having a TV in the house, my main exposure to TF media was the cybertron pack-in episode and Hasbro's website (which was still streaming beast era cartoons). When the first live-action movie came out I lost interest in transformers toys; I wasn't allowed to see it by my parents, and was frustrated that toys of nightmarish character designs from a (needlessly) family-unfriendly movie were being marketed to kids. I did, however, delve headfirst into pirated BW and G1 episodes, the animated cartoon, and TFWiki, wanting to learn as much about the franchise as possible. Ironically, the wiki's ...interesting sense of humor and coverage of the franchise's stranger corners created more awkward moments than seeing the bay movie would have - my younger self was rather confused by such phrases as "cheesecake robot" and "gay for galvatron" :HEADHURTS: With a couple exceptions, I completely avoided Transformers toys from 2008 to 2011 and my interest in playing and collecting slowly dwindled.

2) What brought you back into collecting?
The release of Prime reignited my interest in everything related to the franchise, and I've been consistently obsessed ever since. I loved almost everything about the show, and tried to get as many cast members as possible in accurate toy form. This led to my first encounter with the collecting community. In order to stay up-to-date on everything Transformers I've been religiously following this site's newsfeed since 2012, and frequently read forums and watched video reviews.

3) What are your current collecting preferences?
I try to collect characters more than specific lines. While solely focused on Prime for a while, the inclusion of Beast Wars characters in Thrilling 30 drew me straight into CHUG. Since then, CHUG/Prime Wars has been my main staple - even customized my Beast Hunters Smokescreen to fit their "GEEWUN" look.

4) What is your current favorite toy/figure?
Probably my KO MP10-V. Blasphemous, I know. After five years of searching for a perfect voyager Prime I finally found it at TFCon DC. The transformation is a blast and he looks spot-on in both modes, especially with the added chrome. Despite some quality issues he is by far the best display piece in my almost-entirely-official-chug collection, and looks great next to TR Megatron if you compress his legs a bit.

5) Which figure is "the one that got away"?
Absolutely Combiner Wars Prime. The red one. A local comic shop had him for $20 for months and I passed every time I came due to his unpainted ribs. Then I started customizing my figures with paint... and Prime was gone the next time I entered the store.

6) Where is the most unexpected place you bought a transformer?
A local clothing store, which happened to have construct-bots thundercracker when I wandered through. This was one of two times I would ever see that wave; once at the clothing store and once at KMart on extreme clearance. Also being a bionicle fan, the line intrigued me and I hunted many at retail.

1) in the early summer of 1984 i was shopping with my mom n dad for new sheets (STAR WARS) at the now defunct store, Best. I, of course, was wandering the toy dept. Found a single bot, all alone in that harsh, new world. He was called Windcharger. He cost 2.99. He then lived in my pocket for 5 years.
Then came brawn. then bumbleee.
Other bots came soon after, and only ever stopped commingwhen HasTak stopped making them.
To this day, Minibots/Scouts/Basics have remained my favorites.

2) BEAST WARS!
I only ever stopped because they did.
ive always loved figures, and believe in the greatness, love and magic of toys.
other kids wanted to be cop or firemen or Superman... i want to be Santa.

3)Transformers of all kinds. Robots. Superheroes. Monsters n dinos n dragons.
rEally, a bit of EVERYTHING!
i'm not a "completest"
i just get what i fall in love with. i sure love TFs!
only limits r time, $, space and availability,

4) My current fave?
POTP Starscream
TFP Bulkhead 1st ed.
TLK Voyager MEGATRON
MMC Spartan
iGear Brawn
G1 & MP & RID2015 & TFP SOUNDWAVE! RAVAGE, LASEREAK,

5) I never got a Titan METROPLEX.

6) I bought a MP-10 OPTIMUS from some kid at some other table at Red Lobster.

Motto: "If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you."
When did you first fall in love with transformers and how long did it last?
It was in the late 80s, I'm not exactly sure when. I was 6 or 7 years old. It lasted until 1996, when I was unexpectedly separated from my TF comic book collection and toys. I was losing interest anyway, being a teenager with many other interests, so I never tried to replace what I lost. It wasn't much, just the original run of the US Marvel Comics, and toys of G1 Prowl and Powermaster Optimus Prime.

What brought you back into collecting? Assuming you stopped at some point in your childhood and came back as an adult, what was it that pulled you back in?
In 2000, I was in a grocery store shopping and I caught a glimpse of a VHS tape of the 1986 animated movie. I had never seen it before, so I bought it. After I watched it, my interest in Transformers was reawakened and I began tracking down the comics again. Luckily for me, the 3 comic book stores around my house also sold TF toys as well as the sets of VHS tapes with the G1 cartoon episodes on them. Slowly I began to rebuild my collection, this time including the cartoon as well as more toys along with the G1 comics.

What are your current collecting preferences? What lines are you into, what lines just aren't for you? What is most important to you on a particular toy (character, transformation, deco, etc.)
Currently I'm in my 3rd cycle of collecting, after getting away from it again about 13 years ago, ironically for the same reason as the first time: unexpected relocation resulting in the loss of my toy collection. I started again in 2010, and have picked up pieces from every line that came out since then, beginning with Animated. I'm collecting TR and select pieces from PotP, but I won't pick up everything, mainly the figures I feel give a proper homage to the G1 characters they're based on. I couldn't get into the RiD line, the only ones I even thought about picking up are the G1 deco of warrior class Grimlock and the Stunticon set, but I passed on both. At this point, the most important things to me regarding a figure are accuracy to the character it represents and the scale within the line it is part of.

What is your current favorite toy/figure?
If we are including 3rd party figures, Perfect Effect Warden is my favorite right now, it's an amazing piece of engineering. It's the center piece of my display. Of the official figures, I don't have a single favorite, but my favorite display to look at are Titan Class Devastator, MP-13 Soundwave and 3rd party Quakeblast. Those 3 just look good together on a shelf.

Which figure is "the one that got away"?
For me this changes from time to time. As I said, I had to move on from my toy collection on 2 separate occasions, and I lost quite a few figures, especially the 2nd time. Sometimes I remember a certain figure and wish I had it. If it passes in a few days, I move on. If not, I usually end up buying it on eBay. Currently, my subject of regret is my set of G1 Seacons. I have yet to purchase them, I'm waiting to see if they will get an updated version like the other gestalts did recently. But the set I had was pristine and I regret losing them.

Where is the most unexpected place you bought a transformer?
There wasn't really an unexpected place, but this past Christmas I received TR Overlord as a gift from an unexpected source. It was a total surprise and it made my Christmas.

BBC North West Showcases Alleged Biggest Transformers Collection

Postby Va'al » Thu May 17, 2018 2:37 am

Motto: "Till All Are Pun!"
A new clip from UK-based broadcaster BBC North West over on their social media channels has brought to light what is claimed to be the Guinness World Record beating Transformers collection - currently recorded at 1000 figures, though the record entry is hard to find on the site itself.

The collection in the video, belonging to Mancunian Louis Georgiou, is claimed to be around 1900-2000 items strong, but also appears to include non-official products from third party companies and knock-offs (I see you, offcolour RID Wheeljack), alongside many new and older Hasbro and Takara Tomy figures (including a Sixshot!). Nonetheless, the clip is warming in that it shows another perspective to mainstream media audiences about the hobby as sometimes does not happen, mentions that the collection started by buying toys for his son first of all, and is shown to the office co-workers regularly, as they all wait in that space. Check it out below, and join our discussion on what makes a full collection, what makes Your collection, how many is too many or how many is the most - all in the Energon Pub boards!

I spent too long examining that clip on the 1080p stream. :P
I don't think I could ever own that many. There's not that many Transformers figures I would like to have and I like to keep my collections managable. Selling off ones I'm bored with and keeping my absolute faves.

Impressive collection though.
I have anxiety, depression and aspergers syndrome so my behaviour can be erratic. I don't mean any offense to anyone. I'm just very picky about my Transformers collecting. You're all cool! :)

Likes: Movieverse ('Bayformers' are my fave Transformers), Marvel UK G1, most Marvel US G1, 1986 animated movie (more for style & soundtrack rather than Star Wars-rip off plot).
Dislikes: TFA, G1 cartoon, IDW G1, BW/BM, MP. The entire concept of Autobot Megatron.

One day the person with the actual largest collection will go public with it and I look forward to seeing it. It's not mine, by a long shot!

Neat seeing someone's collection though.

Because it's not the biggest, not by a long shot. I have a far larger collection, and I doubt even mine is the largest. I've estimated for years that I own around 8,000+ Transformers. Over 4,000 of which I have photographed for this site. When you've been obsessively collecting only Transformers primarily for 34 years, 1,000 Transformers is an extremely easy number to surpass.

I have around 950 Transformers in my collection right now, and I only started collecting in 2001 or so (aside from six g1 minis from 1984-1985). I have very few movie figures, no Animated, few RID, and don’t care for the Masterpiece scale. I started collecting while working for an anime importer, buying a lot of the reissue figures, and a lot of the older Beast Wars figures at a few conventions I attended (for work). I quit in ‘04 and didn’t buy many Energon and Cybertron figures before starting to purchase more regularly with the Classics/Henkei line.. I have perhaps 50 third-party figures, although I’ve tried to stop purchasing them n recent years (being patient for Hasbro releases). I’m mostly focusing on the current Generations-type lines (only rarely skipping a few Leader class figures, as I prefer smaller scales) and started filling in my missing G1 figures (mostly 84-87, not the later half of G1).

That said, I am definitely a casual collector.

I have a few other hobbies that make a lot more sense, but I still enjoy unboxing new figures every 3-4 months (big shipments from BBTS). I have about half on display on wall shelves in my man cave, but we really don’t use the room for much aside from exercise equipment.

I can only imagine the hardcore collectors have four and five thousand figures, although I guess some have specialties that get increasingly expensive and difficult to locate. I still haven’t added a few “holy grail” type G1 figures to my collection... Fort Max, for example, although I bought the recent Titans. I don’t keep my toys in the box (no room, nor interest). I’m not looking for the thousand dollar plus chase figures and Japanese exclusives. If I have half as many figures as this guy, I would guess he’s not even in the ballpark for a world record collection.

That said, it’s still neat to see how, why, and what other Transformer collectors like. I really don’t have any interest in conventions and only have bumped into one other collector in the last 17 years (coworker of my wife). I am mostly a lurker on these forums. It’s not a very “social” hobby, at least for me, compared to other interests (tabletop gaming and car shows). I would definitely like to see more on why people collect and what their particular interests are. I really have never been able to answer the “why” adequately... save I enjoy having new versions of the toys I was very fond of for a short time as a child. **Shrugs**
