Jesse Wittenrich has found and Tweeted a pic of Hasbro's old mock-up for Combiner Wars Ironclad. Who is Ironclad? Well, here's a quick history lesson:
Back in the Combiner Wars line, Hasbro had pretooled almost every Deluxe and Voyager mold with a second alternate head for later use of each mold. Most of these alternate heads saw use in the line, but some of them never saw the light of day. One such head was the pretooled head for the Rook mold. Originally, Hasbro had given the Rook mold a second head based on that of the Combaticon Brawl. Before the release of the Combaticons, Hasbro had planned to use the Rook mold for Brawl, but ultimately ended up making a completely new mold for Brawl instead (and one that didn't have a pretooled secondary head, but rather had a pretooled secondary drill turret instead).
When Hasbro decided to make a Combiner Wars giftset release of Computron, the original plan for that set was use the Legends class Groove mold to make Afterburner, while an all-new Technobot would replace Afterburner as a limb (just as Combiner Wars Rook had replaced Groove as a Protectobot limb). This is where Ironclad comes in, who would have been a redeco of Rook finally using the mold's secondary Brawl head. What's more, at RoboCon 2018, it was further revealed that the identity of Ironclad wasn't a whole new character as originally believed, but that he was actually meant to be a Trademark-friendly rename of Ironfist!
In the end, however, these plans fell through when Takara decided to make their own Computron (or "Computicon" in Japan) in the concurrent Unite Warriors line, and opted to heavily retool their Unite Warriors Deluxe-sized Groove mold into a Deluxe-sized Afterburner. Due to the relative closeness in timing, Hasbro was able to acquire the new Deluxe-sized Afterburner from Takara and add it to the Combiner Wars Computron giftset, nixing their original plans for a Legends class Afterburner and the replacement-limb Deluxe class Technobot Ironclad.
And now, after all this time, we finally have a look at what Hasbro had envisioned Ironclad (and its Brawl-based head) would look like:

Hmm I also found this.
It's... uh... NOT my creation. Should I show it?
Okay... well...
Remember how I name-dropped "Ironclad" in the one TCC prose story, because Hasbro had given us early mock-ups for the Technobots?
Well... uh... if you wanted to see...

And Ironfist? First glance at the thumbnail, that color scheme made me think Weirdwolf joined the Technobots.
Still, given Ironfist's prowess with experimental weapons, this guy would've made a cool solo release alongside Betatron-Scattershot.

I know I've shared this with many before, but you can actually make a case for using all the Scattershot releases:
Individual CW Scattershot (Torso for Modulus)
CW Scattershot (Torso for CW Computron , whihc I have dubbed "Betatron)
UW Scattershot (Torso for UW Computron, the TRUE Computron)
There's never enough Combiners if you ask me. I'd gladly add Itornfist into the fold if it was ever realized.

That mold with that head as a Decepticon would have been perfect, we could have had a KO version of TT's Grand Galvatron: CW Cyclonus, CW Offroad, PotP Dreadwind, PotP Blackwing/Darkwing and this guy.

Rook would still work for that since Wandering Roller was also an Autobot.Jelze Bunnycat wrote:Ah, what could have been... Shame Hasbro couldn't be bothered to actually use it, and that FunPub's plans for SG X-Brawn fell through.

Nope, no Autobots or more jets for that one.

Literally going for broke there

I'm almost contemplating just getting another UW LynxMaster, for the Ratchet, but it would be more work to repaint and apply the correct decals....but might actually be cheaper...

o.supreme wrote:Slightly OT....I am now just one Botcon Ratchet away from completing my collection. It is kind of odd that on the last year and a half I obtained a couple of items much more difficult to obtain, and at prices better than expected, but this one item still eludes me. The last couple on eBay were ridiculously priced - $400 and up.

But wouldn't that be kinda cheating?

Not really, considering how difficult they are to find now. It's the same base body, just extra steps to remove the existing paint.
Heck I thought it was brilliant that a fan shared steps to make CW Custom Medix on a budget. If you can get the Medix labels, just kitbash an existing CW First Aid for most of the body, and Ironhide for the waist to swap out. Those might be slightly expensive now, but quite a bit less expensive and easier than finding a White Ratchet, and especially that Alt head. You'd only be missing the translucent blue HFG, and weapon, which to me, aren't really essential.

My Infernocus (Inferno combiner) uses Smokescreen as the right arm man, a 2nd Rook for the left arm, and then deluxe Groove and a 2nd Air Raid for legs. Rook and Air Raid were 2 of my favorites, Groove was not replacing Rook on Defensor, and Smokescreen/Inferno just made sense with their relationships in some media

for me, Wreck-gar and Jazz ended up on Sky Reign, Red Swoop is on Magnaboss, and Ricochet is on Lost Lightatron.

Nice! One of the redeeming things about the CW combiners is that you can at least try to color coordinate them and mix the figures for some symmetry in their appearance. I went for symmetry over color with Rook and Hound on Sky Reign's arms, with Ironhide and Trailbreaker on the legs...

I managed to secure a TFCC Counterpunch of Transformerland for $45 this week. Which now that I have him, i am trying to think about whether or not to attach him to a combiner, which would require some more new figures.
Right now, I have 3 limbs and 1 torso that are by themselves. Wreck Gar came off Sky Reign and stands with the junkions, which is also where I'd prefer him to stay. Dead End currently stands on the Cyberverse shelf, and he's a favorite by himself, so I would also prefer to keep him by himself. Inferno is on the Lost Light shelf, and i would prefer to keep him separate too, as i do have a 2nd Inferno, but he is the core of Infernocus, with Smokescreen, Groove, and my 2nd of both Rook and Air Raid.
So, Counterpunch is sort of the only figure I would like to combine, but he can also stand alone on the Decepticon or Wreckers shelf, so I need to think about that too.
i would like to complete his combiner, but not for the $350-500 per pair they are going for.
I do also have another bone to throw: I have a buddy who saved a CW Quickslinger for me, so I will have him too. I was thinking about swapping Quickslinger onto Battle Core Maximus, so BCM is entirely white, and then Overbite can pair up with Counterpunch to start a new combiner as well.
Also also, I don't have a retail Scattershot, so i could get him to form a new torso as Betatron, with those 2 as his first of 4 limbs.
Any ideas/thoughts?

I guess the only one to observe right now is Menasor. Since Legacy Stunticons came out, are prices for CW/UW ones tanking, or remaining the same?
As for me, I fortunately found a use for all 3 releases of Scattershot.
UW Computon is my "Genuine" Computron
CW Computron, is my "Betatron".
and the retail release Scattershot I used for Modulus, which also is a "type-of" Betatron

It's a quirk I have with some combiners and their names. That is why Lost Lightatron is not Galvatronus, why Infernocus is named the way he is, and why Battle Core Maximus is also named the way he is.
Funny enough, I do not use Ultra Prime. red Prime is Optimus Maximus (to match the comics and Earth Wars) while Battle Core is just a cooler name to me

I'm funny about names as well. While Hasbro did eventually reveal "Othria" as the proper name for the all-female combiner in PotP (as opposed to the random "Elita-Infin1te")
There was no proper combined names for Starscream or Inferno. I just call them "Grand Starscream" and "Infernac" (I was TM saving the name before Hasbro was )
I use the UW configuration for "Grand Convoy", but it works as Ultra Prime as well.
I "fan canon" my White Prime for Optimus Maximus as Ultra Magnus along with the limbs Alpha Bravo, Smokescreen, G2 Ratchet, and Marvel Comics Ratchet (the last one needed to be obtained to complete this combiner)

Sabrblade wrote:My Modulus uses retail Scattershot, TFSS SG Starscream, a stickered-but-unpainted custom class Ratchet, Rook, and a stickered TFSS Bluestreak in lieu of custom class Medix since I'm fully content with the Walgreens Legacy Medix to represent that character and have no chance of acquiring the custom class one now (had a chance to get an unpainted one back one of the RoboCons, but missed that chance due to poor timing on my part and prioritizing other things at the time).
My SG Starscream is a limb on Battle Core Maximus, along with UW Ratchet, Tigatron, and Overbite.
I could make Battle Core Maximus all white once my Slingshot arrives, but I like the story of how Overbite became part of the combiner, and I love that Battle Core Maximus uses components from 5 different (technical) lines of release (CW, UW, TFCC, Selects, Botcon).
I got super lucky with Counterpunch, Ruckus, and Windsweeper, and looking at current prices, I will never get the rest of either combiner. So I like them joining up as is, with a story in my head for them as well.
All my personal combiners get stories as to why they are together. makes it more fun

I use Orthia as well, just makes for a better name.
I call Starscream "Megascream" after that Deviations comic, even though it was terrible.
Infernocus is just such a cool name, I thought it worked for Inferno.
I have tried to think of a better name for Lost Lightatron, but never have had the idea truly click, and he has had the name now for 8 years, so he's keeping it.

Unlike Thunder Mayhem, the matrix can actually go in his chest
Also, given my headcanon that this is a team of survivors who ultimately serve as some sort of anti-hero, I consider the matrix of malice to be the combined source of power, combat prowess, and instinct from their prior combiner forms

On a side note, my son happened to find a tiny chain from another toy that fits perfectly with that Matrix and goes around the neck of Thunder Mayhem. . As for me. I fear my collection will never be complete. I now need just ONE Botcon 2016 Ratchet. The last couple unpainted ones on eBay have sold for upwards of $500 each. That is something I just cannot justify.
The funny thing is, this combiner kinda sorta just came together, I had no plan for this. It only started coming together after a $45 Counterpunch was on TFland, and then I could get Ruckus and Windsweeper off ebay for cheap thanks to the mayhem sets, and then Quickslinger from a friend, so it kinda just came together.
Still tempted to switch Quickslinger and my Battle Core Maximus' Nautilator, but I like the story of both too much to try it for now
