I really hope the Hasbro Slingshot rumors aren't a hoax, or I'll be so mad. Alla yalls can have your own opinions or whatever, that's fine, you're entitled to them, but to me no one could fill my favorite Aerialbot's shoes, let alone some predeco of Blades and or Vortex.
AB on his own, whatever, he's a'ight, I suppose, but as an Aerialbot, nope, nuh uh, nananana, I can't hear you, the part of ten year old me that still lives on deep down inside just ain't havin it, no matter what sort of madness is apparently at play in today's comics.
end opinions!
This.
I actually think Alpha s a well made figure, just not an Airialbot. I do see why hasbro would want to break up the mahogany of jets. I get it, I just don't like it. Personal preference. So I will hold out hope for a hasbro release of slingshot, and when that is confirmed or killed, I'll make my CW decision.

I'd love to see a new Overlord toy.
Gigatron showed up in the current Drift mini as Gigatron. Galvatron started out with a G1-style design, and is now sporting a more unique tank design.

My cynical belief is that Hasbro already has this "Fan Made" combiner done, dusted, and designed and is making us fans feel all warm and fuzzy over choosing it.
Either way, I like the Sea of Rust source. I'm hoping for a Junkion-style vibe from them.

Does IDW get a say? Most likely, but Hasbro's driving this franchise.

If I'm remembering right, hasbro has actually been outed in the past for doing this. One of the Star Wars figures that fans were supposed to "choose", and it was found the "winner" had been in production before the contest even started.

Out of curiosity, what figure was that?
I haven't followed Star Wars figures that much in resent years.
Also, the comic book art work for Breakdown shows his combiner kibble pegged into his back, like he has in one of the pictures of the figure.

One thing that I first started noticing during beast wars... was that I LOVE figures who can incorporate ALL their stuff into any form. Skydive and Alpha Bravo KINDA fall short on that... I mean the gun/feet KINDA look like a weapon that can be held... but only kinda and you can still see fingers and stuff when they use it as giant guns. but at least I'm not losing parts.
This one? This is pretty awesome all around.

(I haven't quoted anyone as too many other posts have already been posted while I was working on this while at work.)
I have zero problem with Alpha Bravo, the guy is a good figure has a nice transformation and looks good posed with other versions of Aerialbots in my collection.
For the record, born in '74 and first memory of Transformer let alone G1 was seeing the original first wave of toys at K-Mart and was hooked immediately. This was about 2 weeks before the show even came out. I had the original Superion, and clearly remember the day I bought Skydive at Woodwards to complete the set, when I couldn't find him anywhere else.
I have a decent current Superion for my needs I have already spent enough on, so I currently are not worried about getting the CW version, that said I bought Alpha Bravo two days ago, and opened him up yesterday.
Will I change my mind about getting CW Superion should Hasbro release Slingshot? Maybe.
Will I change my mind if the Takara one is available at a decent price? Maybe.
If I do will Alpha Bravo be thrown under the bus? Not a chance.
It has nothing to do him being a helicopter instead of a harrier like Slingshot.
It has nothing to do with if they use the same base for Blades (which I'll also buy) or Vortex (not worried, I like my FP/superlink Bruticus for him.) If the same mold is used for the fan-designed team, I'll likely buy that one, as well.
It has nothing to do with being Geewon or not.
It has everything to do with the fact that change happens, either you roll with it, take it as it comes and enjoy things, or **** and let it weigh you down.
If you like the character, buy it. If you hate the character, bitching he exists won't change the past. As far as Off-Road goes, As I do plan to get that set, i'm getting him, and if Wildrider is released later, Off-Road will be posed beside them. Rook (hell yhea I'm buying this guy) will not see a fraction of this hate, simply because many of us see Groove being moved away from being a limb is a good thing, regardless for how it effects the G1ness of Defensor.
To a lesser degree but introduced to the conversation already:
I have an almost complete run of the Marvel comics, missing a few of the earliest ones, as I didn't even know it existed until issue 7. I liked the basis of the Dreamwave run, not everything mind you, but I found them enjoyable. However I have tried the IDW comics on and off a few times, but I just can't get into them, a few one i read and loved (spotlight Kup) and I like many of the bits with the Lost Light, but other aspects I just can't stand, like Prime jumping back and forth to being Orion, and (prepares for the hate) while I know a number of people are super excited about the CW Ultra Magnus that is coming out, I hate the direction they went with the whole "Magnus died eons ago, others have taken his place" It worked for the Dread Pirate Roberts, It's expected every now and then with Batman (and other DC characters), It was plot twist I saw coming a mile away and killed an otherwise enjoyable read in John Byrne's Next Men Prequel 2112. But it seems (to me atleast) to be the best example of IDW recrafting classic characters without a shred of connection to the original concepts created for them, but I digress.
What works or exists in your personal collections or head-canon is a matter of works for you. Personally I can see Alpha Bravo, Rook and Off-Road as basically G1 because they have been introduced standing beside existing G1 characters. I don't see IDW stories as being G1 because they push to far beyond the boundaries of story definition from either the a) the original show, b) the Marvel run of comics or c) the bios written for the original Tech Specs. But that is just what works for me, and I'll respect anyone elses views on what works for them as long as they respect mine.
You've just said what been boiling inside me with the IDW take on TF lore. Yup! I don't have to like it but I respect those who do so, hopefully respecting my opinions too.
One thing I got to hand to IDW, they didn't drop the ball on TF for better or worse and kept the comic line running for like almost a decade (?) now. I'm looking at you Pat Lee!

With all the mass-shifting that takes place in their cartoon and comic portrayals, the Combiners go way, way better with the new Legends figures than with the Deluxes... and I like it!
Posted by JustPlainME on February 19th, 2015 @ 11:51pm CST
I'm not knocking AB or Offroad, but I do have a question about them. Have they appeared anywhere in fiction or toys, besides the recent IDW depictions as being "backup" limbs? That would be my only gripe about them. If they're some obscure, late G1 characters, then that might explain a little. I kind of got away from Transformers right after the 3 episodes that they passed off as Season 4 of G1.
I like AB as a stand alone figure, and I can accept the backup limb idea, but I still want Slingshot and Wildrider. Not as enthused about Offroad.
I would like to point out that in most fictions, the combined forms of Combiners makes a new persona. So, swapping limbs with different characters would seem to change the identity of the Combined form, wouldn't it? So, in essence, Superion minus Slingshot plus Alpha Bravo would no longer be Superion.
Just thinking.

The way Hasbro seems to be approaching new members to preexisting teams is like this.Ironhidensh wrote:I actually think Alpha s a well made figure, just not an Airialbot. So I will hold out hope for a hasbro release of slingshot, and when that is confirmed or killed, I'll make my CW decision.
Back when Hasbro introduced the Power Core Combiners at BotCon 2010 and were trying to justify the existence of "Bombshock w/ Combaticons" and "Skyburst w/ Aerialbots", their line of thinking at the time was that the five (or six, in cases like the Constructicons) original team members were not the only members of those teams, so as to say that while Bombshock and his drones are Combaticons, Hasbro did not want us to look at Bombshock combined with his drones and think "This is Bruticus." They wanted us to treat the originals as simply like one squadron within a greater, larger group of Combaticons, or Aerialbots, or whatever other combiner subgroups Hasbro was willing to add to.
We saw shades of this in the ROTF movie in which Devastator was formed by at least seven Constructicons while many more Constructicons (even of similar body-types to the ones who formed Devastator) fought on the ground at the same time as Devastator's climbing the pyramid to reveal the Great Machine.
It was later in the Exodus novel that this concept was taken further to a whole new level, in which the Aligned continuity's Constructicons were revealed to be HUGE in number. In that iteration, the Constructicons were an entire social class, with High Councilor Drivetrain as their patriarch. Anyone who worked in construction as part of the construction guilds was considered a Constructicon, regardless of whether or not they were among the specific seven (yes, seven) who formed Devastator. This suggests that Bulkhead might have once been considered a Constructicon before the war. But during the war, there were vast swarms of Constructicons; an entire army of them alone destroyed Crystal City. And the Retribution novel would eventually give us the names of the main seven who form Devastator: Scrapper, Mixmaster, Hook, Scavenger, Bonecrusher, Frontloader, and Long (not "Long Haul", just "Long").
The WFC comic (which adapted chapters 12-15 of Exodus) showed us what several of the book-only characters looked like, including the Constructicon patriarch Drivetrain:
And the Covenant of Primus book revealed Devastator:
Also in both the novels and the WFC/FOC video games, an Aerialbot was basically any Autobot who both could fly and had a jet-like altmode. Even Jetfire was considered an Aerialbot (even if he himself did not think so, still regarding himself as a Seeker, but an Autobot one). Same went for the Seekers, who were likewise just flying Decepticons with jet-like altmodes. In fact, according to the novels, all Aerialbots were ex-Seekers who had chosen to side with the Autobots when the time came to picking sides in the war. Jetfire was the only one who actually defected rather than having first gone with the Autobots when the war faction first sprang up and the population chose sides, though the games seem to have shown Jetfire having chosen to remain a neutral for as long as he could before he ultimately chose the Autobots. Additionally, for the five specific Aerialbots who form Superion, they're all named after their G1 counterparts, even if Fireflight has a similar body-type to Shockwave.
So in a way, with the latest additions of Alpha Bravo and Powerglide to the Aerialbots, Offroad and Blackjack to the Stunticons, and Rook to the Protectobots, Hasbro seems to just be keeping up with this mentality of having a greater number of members for each subgroup, whether they're necessary for gestalt combination or not.
Yes it was.Editor wrote:Wasn't it announced at the Toy show that the Sea of Rust had won that poll?

Well, as a 33 year old, I can easily get behind Leoking's opinion. I really do not see the issues around introducing new TF's in existing teams. I grew up on the GEEWUN cartoon and yes, it kinda sucks we're not getting Slingshot straight away. But Alpha Bravo is a good toy IMO and looks good in all his modes. So why not?
Yeah, blahblahblah Superion is jets. Humbug! Ni! Like there's always been consistency in the combiner teams. Because Bruticus needs a space shuttle. And remember Liokaiser? He wasn't just six guys, he had parts that could be replaced. It's what militairy units do.
Will I get Slingshot when he's available? Yes. Does that mean I hate Alpha Bravo? Nope. He can be a limb for Optimus! Air Raid can fall in battle and Superion might need a replacement limb!
And, at the end of the day, Alpha Bravo is only a deluxe and won't cost you an arm or a leg. Haha

I love these toys - there is enough nostalgia for the overall look to feel familiar and enough originality to not just feel like we're retreading old ground. The price is right and the attention to detail spot-on. Last time I liked a line this much was CarRobots\RID (one of the few non-G1 lines I'd consider chasing for a full set of).
I've seen a lot of feathers flying around on here and other forums about how third-parties are doing this better than Hasbro are, but I feel this is a very unfair comparison. Comparing a $40+ collectible to a $16 children's toy is ludicrous, sorry - its the equivalent of saying "My Masterpiece Starscream is much more complex than your Classics". We're not the target audience for these toys and should be thankful we're considered at all - we're not 10 year olds with limited pocket-money or relying on pester power.
I'd personally have liked the repaints of Silverbolt\Menasor to be more imaginative like having Axelerators with Hotspot remolded into Pyro for the Autobots and Skyscorchers with Silverbolt as Skyquake. Even Thunderclash and Turbomasters might be fun - just characters we've not seen in mainline toyranges for years.

GEETHREE is in full effect! Alpha Bravo has been unleashed from the armpits of Cybertron and now he's bringing some friends.

I'm quite a bit younger than you guys(22), and I completely missed out on G1 with the transformers movie being my first and only g1 experience. I kinda feel like lucky that I missed it though, because now I can get the modern stuff without any nostalgia factor blocking me from enjoying anything. I understand that you guys like what you grew up with, but IDW is what I grew up with. These combiner wars sets will be my first combiners, besides FOC bruticus, and I for one really don't care if there is a helicopter in an aerial team or a pickup in a stunt team. I'm just glad these are being made and that I can afford to pick a few of them up.
Awesome. Love and embrace what parts of the fandom speaks to you Leoking. Just because we are all fans of Transformers, we are all coming at these materials from different places and times, and that only makes us all stronger by being able to share these different points of view.

Nowadays, when we get new characters in G1-based lines, it's some kind of heresy.

Pretenders went down smooth indeed.

Silly gimmick aside, I haven't heard anyone hating on the Pretenders based on "who" they were as characters over "what" they were as toys.RhA wrote:Sabrblade wrote:Back the 80's, people were fine with us getting new characters in the G1 line every year.

I definitely have a little love available for Alpha Bravo. The pictures I am seeing of him really seem like he is a great figure. But there is also a reality to that Superion isn't complete without him being all jets... I do have the ROFT Superion with and upgrade kit... So it doesn't bother me to bad that CW Superion isn't all jets... It makes him slightly different...
Problem I am having though is that Bruticus and Protectobots/Defensor should really be the only two that have the helicopter.. Everyone else is just wannabe's... (That may be my bias to Bruticus though...)

I'm trying to like AB, but it's like choosing between a plate of spinach and a dish of blueberry cheesecake.

True enough.
The only example of a character getting flak over who he is is Wheelie as far as I know. The rhyming was hated, the fact that he turned in to a thumb with wheels was ignored.
