On a side note, the Transformers movie was apparently able to achieve this feat, without much aid of public commercial support. Earlier it was reported that the Chinese goverment had banned all media coverage surrounding the movie. This was however disputed.

China has been cracking down on risque advertising lately. I don't think that affects TFs though. Also, the article above says it's disputed, and I certainly haven't heard anything to that effect anywhere else. Definitely pinch of salt time.

I think it's funny that the top two movies are Titanic and Transformers. How different can they possibly be?

Perhaps all the "Pro-Americanism" in the film is what the Chinese Government particularly disliked.
To only be behind Titanic is an epic achievement, Titanic is the Benchmark film in almost every single market across the world (even though it was terrible)

Agreed. They don't want Americans being portrayed in a positive light at all...very Soviet of them, I think. What's interesting is that most educated Chinese seem to see this and ignore it.
And I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought Titanic was terrible. The sets were nice, the FX were average, and the acting was piss poor. I wonder if Leo DiCaprio looks back and that and puts his face in his hands, thinking "My God, I was horrible in that".
