Hasbro has updated their offical site with a QnA for the week of June 7th which is shown below.

Q: Are the TRANSFORMERS ALTERNATORS figures meant to be the actual G1 characters rebuilt in new forms or are they just characters with the same names and similar appearances. Takaraâ€™s story for their Binaltech line seems to link the new figures directly to their old namesakes, yet the connection is unclear for US fans. How exactly is this line connected to G1?

A: ALTERNATORS is a product line meant to appeal to G1 fans as well as todayâ€™s kids. We leave it up to the fans to make the parallels to G1; but we are working on ways to bring a story to light in the US.
