It's more like a cloak. He's trying to hide the disfigurement from the last movie. Possibly coincidentally, his battle damage and cloak-thingy look remarkably familiar.

Has anyone else noticed that Megatron also has a shotgun on his back? I'd hate to get shot by that. And Ironhide has this awesome sniper rifle looking thing on his back. I can't wait to see how they use these weapons in the movie!

In no way is the weapon Optimus used a shotgun. He uses the same gun in both movies, and neither of those times is it a shotgun. His weapon is officially an Ion Blaster, just like G1.

Iamwarhorse, do you even know a Shotgun from an Ion Blaster? Yeah, it's not so easy to catch on to, but here's the difference. Top: Shotgun. Bottom: Ion Blaster.
In the Bayverse, this is an Ion Blaster:
(Prime's Mech Tech Gun I believe is an Ion Blaster. I may be wrong. The bottom pic is for sure an Ion Blaster)
