Yah, but you need a spooky castle and an abandoned, burnable windmill for the full affect.

anyway.....
CRON JOBS!
bearing in mind i know less about programming than i do about nuclear physics; what if HMW had a periodic Down time, during wich the cron jobs performed, and then once they where done HMW came back up?
is that possible? does it make sense?

MKall wrote:Now it's time for a random idea. I was reflecting on how easy it is to create spy networks through this game. A couple friends across factions could ruin a lot of planning. Now the simple way is to just ban those involved, but in the end that just makes it player vs staff, and that's not what I want this game to be about. Instead I'm thinking about adding real consequences and rewards into the game. If someone reports spies to their faction leader (with proof), the leader could give the spy a choice, imprisonment or defection to the side they're collaborating with. If they choose imprisonment, they're unable to do anything for a set period of time. If they choose defection, then they leave everything behind that they can't carry with them. All spare weapons, 90% of their energon reserves, and victory points all disappear. And woe be it to any faction leader if they're caught allowing a spy to infiltrate their own ranks. My theory is, spying can be fun, but like in real war there can be consequences.
Gotta admit this sounds pretty cool.

Aye. I used to frequent this other online game (http://www.kingdomofloathing.com - for reference) that had a downtime late each night (as in, nightime in the UK) called 'rollover'. During this time the game was taken offline, and all the site maintenance went down- resetting adventures, changing the effects of items and moon phases etc.
Given, I think this game is a little more complex than HMW in this way, it shows that it's a good idea.
If you'd like- Mkall, Tam- I can PM you my old password and account name there so you can have a poke yourself.
But yeah, the point is I think rollover periods are a good idea, and pretty useful too- especially when adding new content.

i don't think that's quite necassary, maintenanace downtime isn't that novel an idea.

The problem is that cron jobs run every minute to update things in the database, the ones that run every hour and day aren't the problem (I think).

It's beginning to sound like HMW is fairly badly off as far as programming goes.

Re: Mkall's HMW Journal Discussion
are there any we can get away with removing or decreaseing their frequency?
does the high scores really need to be done hourly?
what about removing the random mission generation and have only the Player initiated mission generation, like spring '06?

By removing the radom missions i am afraid you get too many missions an to less players

Re: Mkall's HMW Journal Discussion
i think you have misunderstood me;
there are two methods of generating missions for people to use
random generation: this is the original method, the game creates random missions, or random levels, at random times
Player initiated generation; whenever a player loads the mission screen and the game does not have any random generated missions the game generates a mission of a level suitable for the bots they have activated.

I'd suggest dropping battle beasts. It's such a bad use of energon.
