This isn't accurate. Anyone in America can vote for anyone in any election. You aren't restrict to what's on the ballot and you don't even have to vote for someone who's even running. We have third party candidates all of the time and they've won offices as high as governor. It just seems like it's either or because only two parties have the press and cash (and a well established historical foundation).
The American voting system isn't "one or the other," it's "all or nothing." You either win an election or you lose. Obviously Europe is very different with their proportional representation.
