On a more constructive note, here's something I'd like to see:

In keeping with the idea of an autoscript that would unban someone after time was served, I'd like to have a different system for issuing warnings.

Something like a mod-accessible board on each player's profile, where a Mod could post a warning or demiwarning or what have you, and all the official warnings ever issued to that individual would be right there in one list for us to see how many they've received. When a mod posts a warning/demiwarning the system would automatically shoot a copy via pm to the member in question, in case they don't check their profile often.

I'd also suggest that there be a script that automatically bans them for the necessary amount of time when they hit the various ban points, but that places ban-power in the moderators' hands, which personally I'm not king on.

No, but we could have it flag one of us when it got to that point so an admin could step in. I like this idea of automating the process. Takes a bit of the human error out and allows us to easily have reports on any past infractions. :-?

VB has a "warning" system that you can set a number of "points" moderators can give, and how long they stay on a users account. The admins then set a level of "points" that a ban goes into effect. The more the "points" the longer the ban. Even after the "points" go away, the warning notice stays on the account forever so you can see if someone is getting right to the edge then backing off for a while and repeating to get around the process. It also sends a PM to the member with the reason for the warning that is required to be typed in by the mods giving the warning.

Perhaps something like that exists for phpBB?

Well here's an advanced version for VB: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?p=574374 if anyone wants to poke around and see if that's something that's wanted and can be done.

And here's what we use: http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/user ... ions_intro

Note: The User infractions also dumps activity into a forum, we set up a mod-only "Reported infractions" forum.

I was under the impression something like this was already suppose to be in place.

I remember when I got my three day suspension from LG (for substituting one vowel for another and some people were far too sensitive ... no wait, they just wanted me banned because I was a threat to their cheating process) he said i'd automatically come off after three days. Five days later, no go, so I contacted him and he was surprised it didn't work so he did it manually.

That's becuase LG can't count. He's like King Arthur, King of the Britons; one, two, five.

Regarding Gor:

His permanent banning is unfair as I see it, since the whole drama he was banned over was a result of being provoked by OS's announcement. It's been said in this thread it could have been worded better, well it certainly couldn't have been worded much worse!
Since the staff freely admits that mistake, how about an amnesty over the whole matter?
I mean what's the worst thing that could happen if he was let back? Despite all the bad mouthing he's been getting in this thread he's only a poster like the rest of us, incapable of doing any actual harm to the site.

The site wouldn't come tumbling down if he was given a chance.

I'd also like to point out the irony of how the RDD has been labeled over the years as supposedly badmouthing people on a private board, yet nobody seems to find fault in the badmouthing of Gor that's gone on in this thread so far.
Anything said on the RDD site is at least hidden from view, so nobody can get offened by comments made there.
However Gor can still view this site and read all the comments being made about him, yet is not able to respond to them in any way to deend himself. Hardly seems fair does it.

I'll agree that OS's post was badly worded at best, inflammatory at worst. However, I will be the first to admit that Gor has, in the past, proven to be easily provoked in the past. There was also a recent incident (which I won't elaborate on, since I "walked" into the middle of it) in which he lambasted one member of a IM conversation for some offense; percieved or not, I don't know.

If he can read this, then I really don't see it as "talking behind his back." The fact that he can't respond might be considered unfair.

To quote Siebs from this thread:
Seibertron wrote:I hope this will shed some light on the situation and help some of the members understand why we have stated that Goribus won't be unbanned.

To quote Caelus from this thread:
Caelus wrote:but even I'm not in favor of bringing Goribus back.

This is pretty much the view of the staff. It is a done deal.
Speaking of "fairness"....Explanations were asked of the staff and now those explanations are being called "badmouthing".
"Fairness" is a very relative term which can be interpreted differently from any angle. There is absolutely no reason for Goribus to defend anything because this is a done deal. The facts have been stated and the situation is over. 3 pages ago in this thread Seibs stated it is time to move forward.

Then might I suggest that someone slaps a lock on this thread, as it has served it's original purpose and is creating yet more unnecessary 1nt@rw3b drama... :-?
