No more, than the big and bulky Energon Prime and Omega Supreme, or the big and bulky Laser Rod Optimus Prime, or even the big and bulky MP-10 Prime.

If anything, this should be cheaper than any of those, and they weren't exactly break the bank expensive or anything.

From a distance, with the head in that color scheme, it doesn't scream Optimus Prime, Optimus Primal, or Primal Prime as much as this guy:

HA! Dream on. Nowadays the TF prices have skyrocketed. That damn YOTG Lazer Optimus was 200$CAN, the Insecticons were 120$CAN, and Soundwave was 220$CAN. It wouldnt surprise me if that thing could go for 200$CAN at the very least. Even 300$CAN is not out of the question.

The previous YOTsomething figures were expensive, but were not stupid expensive. Are they seriously expecting to sell anything at scalper prices right off the store? I mean, WTF? Even "on clearance", all Platinum sets are stupid expensive. Let's hope TrU's suits rethink their pricing policies before they stop making YOTX TFs altogether.

By the way, Optimus Primal is not a monkey, he's an APE!

It should be Year of the Ape!

Really?

Its $139.99US for G2 Laser OP on BBTS, Shipping wouldn't be more than 10 or 20 more.

Insecticons $89

Soundwave $149.99.

and BBTS is known to be one of the higher priced online stores.

I think wherever you are getting your figures from in Canada is severely hiking up the prices.

I'd be surprised if it went for more than $150US.

I am pretty certain that is what Hasbro is doing. Wouldnt be the first time they do something like this. It's like how they commemorated the 30th anniversary with 30 (31) random exclusives (and Windblade).

I had this mold once, its pretty great and I regret to have sold it when I sold all my tfs 4/5 years ago. I am not excited for this due to how the colour scheme seems to drown out the really cool sculpting details this guy has as well as the price I expect him to be. If G2 prime would be 179$, this mold wont be less than 100$. And it isnt worth more than 50$. Will only get it at a deep discount though I hope Hasbro learns from how much the pverpriced this year's collectables. I mean, come on MP Starscream is 60$ and just as exclusive, how does this make any sense?!

We can probably thank China and Japan for that. Remember that the original Year of the Dragon Optimus Prime started as a Chinese exclusive before TRU and other retailers jumped in and made this a yearly exclusive. Chinese exclusives have ridiculously high prices which were basically matched outside China (perhaps to prevent reverse importing) and set the standard for other YOT exclusives.

Meanwhile for Masterpiece figures Hasbro and TRU have a history of pricing well below Japanese retail for similar figures (with the exception of Prowl and Bluestreak) so we get some surprisingly low prices on some really great figures.

Comparing the two lines it feels like the pricing is lopsided (and it certainly is), but if you look at the country of origin you can at least see the reasoning behind it.

I blame TrU Canada's monopoly and the sheetee CAN$. Also, of the prices I told before, add another 15% in sales taxes.

Me, ordering these from BBTS wouldnt be better. I take from example, Soundwave.

Full price from TrU Canada: 220$+15%tx = 252.95$CAN.
So, that mean 190.50$US as I write this.

Soundwave from BBTS: Price plus shipping is 170.60$US. Add around 30$CAN in guaranteed custom fees and it amount to 193.30$US. So, ironically, from buying it ON SALE from BBTS, I end up paying MORE than full TrU price.

Finally, cheapest is Yahobby at only 120$US plus 24$ shipping, plus 23$US custom fees. Meaning 163$US total. That's on super sale BTW.

So, yeah, Platinum prices are hicked as fok, no matter where you buy them.

Traditionally an Optimus Prime with a Beast Mode and an regular Optimus head but using the name Optimus Primal would be a T-Rex or a Bat not an Ape.

So I would say this is actually 'Optimus Primal' and not Optimus Prime with a funny name (like the Bat one was too).

But the idea of an Optimus Primal spin off character who is like Primal Prime is appealing to me too. I'm sure Funpub will like this toy too.

--

As to pricing I'm sure it will be horrible. But the pricing is very much all over the place one something you can pay anything from just a little more for a Anime Bluestreak to crazy money and pay anything between £60 & £130.00 for the Blaster & Perceptor set.

I would say £60.00 or so is perfectly fair considering you get the new parts for Perceptor and some Cassettes. I will agree the pricing on the Insecticons is obviously a bit do lally as I can't really see them toping £45.00 for me to consider them.

Essentially any time you can get a previous reissue for a lot less it just shows the prices up as being unrealistically high sometimes.

Well considering the arms are completely hollow it doesn't actually weigh a lot, but he is a lot larger than you may think. I'm not bothered by the hollowness, but the arms were completely translucent on the original and you can't help but gaze into the vacuum that are his arms.

Well, I mean they could have used optimus minor, but a translucent o/m being sold for $150 probably wouldn't go over very well ;)

I would argue that the first Optimus Primal toy is pretty close to a regular Optimus head:

It sure is closer to the one we got after that for RID.

While we are on the topic of what is the correct name for the zodiac years, I am wondering if you could help me out is it:

Year of the goat or ram?

Year of the pig or boar?

I have seen both versions of these and do not know the answer.

If I'm (and by that I mean research on the internet) not mistaken, it is pig and goat; I'm not sure if there are boars native to asia, and ram's, I believe, tend to live in mountainous areas.

By the way, Optimus Primal is not a monkey, he's an APE!

It should be Year of the Ape!
Glad I got that off my chest.
No.

There is no Ape in the Chinese Zodiac.

Sounds like someone needs to brush up on their Jackie Chan Adventures ;)
Or Digimon Tamers. :-B

While we are on the topic of what is the correct name for the zodiac years, I am wondering if you could help me out is it:

Year of the goat or ram?

Year of the pig or boar?

I have seen both versions of these and do not know the answer.

Wikipedia says this:

Original Chinese
Rat
Ox
Tiger
Rabbit
Dragon
Snake
Horse
Goat
Monkey
Rooster
Dog
Pig

Japanese
Mouse
Ox
Tiger
Rabbit
Dragon
Snake
Horse
Sheep
Monkey
Rooster
Dog
Wild Boar

Between Japanese and Chinese, the original Chinese characters represent more than one animal when standalone, hence the confusion in translation at times. Plus, apes are often lumped with monkeys in popular culture, being of the same family (Primates, Simians to be exact).

Motto: "BRING ME DANGER!"
If anything, this release makes me want to hunt down the original. It's just the look of it that won me over back in 2002, but I never actually bought it. Judging from the reactions in this thread, I don't see people being very enthousiastic about it (cruel folks!). I'm hoping this means AA Primal goes down in price.

I could propose to trade you mine. He's 100% complete with his disk missile. He just have a slight split behind one of his calf. It wont change the look nor prevent transforming and posing. I'd only ask for 2 CW Protectobot deluxes, or one deluxe plus Legend Groove.

Still, I'm pretty sure shipping would be a deal breaker.
Come see my latest creation, the COMPLETE combiner team, Scorponok and his Pretenders, forming SHELLSHOCK
