No.

Hasbro. They needed to promote the toys better than just a sixty second commercial, so they had a series of 23-minute commercials made. That's not an exaggeration, there was no one creator of G1, it was made by Hasbro to sell toys. Why do you think the first thirty minutes of the original movie killed off the old cast, while also bringing in a new set of characters?

*Voltron is awesome because he was the first "true" combiner. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Voltron was the first robot to actually consist of several robots that could act on their own. The show paled in comparison to Golion.

*G1 was created because Hasbro got the rights from Takara to market Diaclone over here in the US. They decided to make a show and give them new color schemes. The rest is history. Use the TFwiki for more info.

I would have said that Gundam did this in '79, but then, the most of the Gundam's component's couldn't fight, mostly because they didn't have cockpits.

Getter Robo was three jets that combine, if you count it, than it would be the first, I think. It originally aired in 1974.

First combining sentai robot was not till 1981 so I think that may have been way before voltron

Yeah, one of the earlier Super Sentai series did it in 1981.

EDIT: And that series aired one month before GoLion. How about that.
