A better director

I hate Michale Bay. His movies are interesting, but not very well put togeather. Transformers made some sense, but there were WAY too many humans. Like Scott Ramsoomair said: "The cast of people was faaaaar too oversized. Hell they were still adding people half way through the movie." and he makes a good point in his comic by putting up the line "Staring a giant cast of two-dimensional characters that no one cares about! With special guest stars the Transformers."

That and Bay himself said that he didn't want to do the movie, and he reffered to the fans as nerds more than once. What were people thinking when they thought Bay would be a good choice?

So, here's you're guys' chance. Who do YOU think would make a better director for this franchise and why?

Me, I like the idea of Brian Singer. Why? Because if you looke at the x-men movies, yeah he messed around with the characters, but he didn't change them entirely, and he made the entire thing to look realistic. That and, dispite the large amount of mutants there were, there was still a fair bit of characterization.

When compared to what happned in Transformers, none of the characters were very well developed except for Sam.

There, I hope I put this rant/semi-topic in the right place. o_o

Nope, I've been a member for a while, but I've mostly been here for HMW. Never actually posted in the forums.

I think that is very good thinking. Brian Singer is good at giving character development to a large number of main cast. X-men movies were done very nicely. All 3 are superb. I think Singer can be a good choice to bring TF 2 & 3 to what it's supposed to be. Considering that the sequels will surely bring in more and more characters. Bay, so as not to ease him out, can remain as a co-director, to maintain the type of firepower fight scenes that he started.

I think if they replaced Bay, the best bet is to go with more of an unknown, or someone who's best known for smaller stuff. I mean, I honestly doubt anyone would have pegged Peter Jackson for Lord of the Rings, Singer for X-Men, Nolan for Batman, etc.

A few interesting thoughts...

o Edgar Wright(Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) - Mostly has a comedy background, but he's got a good style and Hot Fuzz was probably the most tightly plotted action flick in years, parody or not(there's not a wasted moment in that movie). Bonus points for likely Simon Pegg and Nick Frost cameos(and if we got Bill Nighy as the voice of Shockwave, even better!).

o Mikael Håfström)(1408) - Another director with a great style that would be a lot of fun to see with Transformers. His would probably be a real atmospheric Transformers movie, which might lend itself to certain characters(I could see the Insecticons working for this).

o Matthew Vaughn(Stardust, Layer Cake) - Vaughn almost directed X3, and his decisions were arguably the best parts of that movie. Stardust means he might not be an unknown for long, but he's got the style and the right background to be a solid choice.

o Tim McCanlies(Secondhand Lions) - McCanlies has a fun visual style and he's got "robot experience"... he wrote "The Iron Giant"(admittedly, my bias toward that movie makes me put him here in the first place). I think he could make a really fun movie.

Guys like F. Gary Gray and Jon Turteltaub have established themselves in the genre, with some big hits, but haven't quite done stuff on this scale, and could do pretty good. Alfonso Cuaron would be a REALLY intriguing choice, but I doubt he'd ever do it.

As for Singer himself... I can't say I'd really be crazy about that choice, to be honest. Singer did well with X-Men, but I'm just not sure how well he'd work for Transformers. I still say if you went for an established "big movie" director, Gore Verbinski's the guy to get.

Don't get me wrong... I actually enjoyed Bay's work in the movie, and am glad he seems to be intent on returning. I think he just needs a little more discipline as a director... his action style was hit and miss in this one, but he showed a knack for the "awe" type of moments. The Autobot arrival scene was honestly the best sequence of any film I've seen this year.
