G1 Bumblebee Clay Mold - Work in progress

Postby kelvinchang99 » Mon Jan 28, 2008 7:42 am

Hi all,

Just been doing a clay mold of the Bumblebee. the figure was intended to stand next to the MP and be around the right proportionate size to the characters...

I have found it abit difficult to deal with clay in that I cant seem to get the smooth texture.

Does anyone have suggestions on what mold they use that give the nicer straight lines and smooth textures?

See my work in progress below. More shots are available on http://kelvinchang99.freespaces.com/g1bumblebee.html

Also, as i am using clay, the problem is that the mold gets heavy and requires certain parts to join, so therefore, the figure stops being transformable and at best, I am only able to get it to retain poseability.

Anyone got suggestions to improve on this.

Thanks all for your help in advance.

i dont think clay is a good material to kitbash with, im guessing you used the air dry stuff, you can get it smooth a few ways,
cut the surface with a craft knife or drag some thread through it,
or get some water on your funger and rub the clay, that will smooth it out too

Thanks Piranacon on the advise. Yeah, I made it smooth using my fingers running through it. But I think I used the wrong mold type. I heard about Milliput.. is that a better product to use?

Wow, that has potential. The paint is light on quality, but it is WIP.
I beleive some sculpting and sanding will hel pthe clay as well, but you have started a great custom.

milliputty is good but id only use it for makign heads or something small, i think for something like legs or arms how you used it id go for either an old toy with similer proportions or make new parts out of some scrap plastic,(CD's , tubs, boxes etc) or if you can find some styrene

Hi all,

I have ordered some milliput to see if I can improve the face to be more G1 like. Hope to get it soon.

Regarding plastics from other items ie: CD case etc, I have never thought of that. Great idea. Thank you. I will see how I can integrate that with this. Might be abit hard to chip off some parts of it now.. but I think it will work really well.

Thanks Sherade. I will update some pics when I get the milliput and put some work into it.

Thanks guys for the tips.

Kindest Regards,

Hi Pirannacon,

The purple prime is Galvatron Prime. A repaint that I did following a Deviant Art from an artist called.

You can see my post here:
