360 Backwards Compatible?

I heard from a co-worker that the 360 is not backwards compatible anymore. Is this true? If so, does anyone know if it's possible to get one that is backwards compatible and where I can go about getting one?

For that matter, what about the PS3? Same thing?

Kinda annoying if that really is the case...

The 360 is backwards compatible but only for those in this list

As far as I know they are done adding to it too.
I don't have a PS3 so not sure on that one.

The PS3 can play PS1 games.

But Sony has had trouble with the PS2 emulator for the PS3, so now PS3's cannot play PS2 games. Kudos for Sony on failing to have a good emulator for backwards compatibility.

As for the 360, yeah only some games are backwards compatible. If a game came out for 360 and the X-box, like Hitman: Blood Money, or Gun. Gotta buy it for the 360 in order to play it.

So, don't chuck out your X-box or PS2 just yet.

Microsoft has always used software emulation, but instead of just building a nice robust emulator that can play all games, they've been emulating games individually, and sometimes getting one down, allows 5 more to play, etc. I personally think its a load of crap and I am irritated that MS didn't create anyway for you to transfer Xbox Saves to the 360!

As for Sony here's there deal. Everyone complained about the $600 launch price tag of the PS3. The original 60GB ps3 however was the best model. Had all the necessary PS2 hardware built in, 4 USB ports, memory card ports, and all the other fine things PS3 has to offer. However that model was costing them $850 to build and they were selling it for $600! So as bad as the price tag was they were actually loosing money over it.

Over a year the price of Blu-ray diodes came down, and Sony was able to reduce the nm of the cell processor. Sony was able to break even on PS3's but at a cost: backward compatibility! The 80GB model released in 2007 at a cost of $500 was identical to the 80GB in every way except it lacked the cell processor and emulated it instead. The rest of the PS2 hardware was still intact. From what I hear its not quite as compatible as the 60GB but still works pretty well. The other new model, the 40GB was a new model all together.

The 40GB model has no PS2 hardware what-so-ever, and has a reduced nanometer cell processor in it. It is made at a cost of $400 and sold at $400. Sony has said yes it could be done, but they have lost so much on the system, they don't want to put the R&D into making an emulator for the 40GB model. As for the old 80GB model, the last of it was released in the MGS4 bundle and now is discontinued. There is now only one PS3: the "new" 80GB model, which is identical to the 40GB model except with an 80GB HD.

So yes BC is pretty much completely dead on the PS3. It does however play almost all PSX games. I think there's more involved however than putting R&D into an emulator: I think its because the PS2 is still very much alive and kicking and making Sony a lot of money. Add BC to the PS3 and you can no longer sell the PS2 for $130.

I don't really care anymore honestly. I got my original PS2 hooked up in my bedroom, with my original xbox sitting right above it! I don't think BC is that important and honestly with the 360's poor handling of it, and PS3's cancelation of it, I think its a fad thats just going to go away. The only system right now that has seamless BC is the wii... but not for very good reason. For whatever reason, Nintendo decided to stick with the same architecture as the gamecube for the Wii. Its nearly identical except it has more memory, and a faster CPU and GPU. When you pop a GC disk in, it just loads up a different Bios and turns into a Gamecube. So basically BC for the Wii is just a byproduct of the architecture!

Not all games are like that, Blitz: The League came out for both XBox and 360 and the 360 can play the regular XBox version.

I recommend all 360 owners who wanna play their old Xbox games keep an original Xbox on hand. You get to keep your game saves as well as play every Xbox game seamlessly. I for one am probably going to trade the Xbox in soon as well as my PS2 in hopes to get a PS2 slim model. My Xbox days are over. If I really wanna play halo 1 or Halo 2 I'll get them on PC but I'm kind of over both of those games.

Well, those two are completely compatible with the 360 anyway. And it's not like it's hard to beat them again if you need to. Which I don't know why it would matter. Microsoft probably thought the same thing, hence why there are no save transfers.

I just don't see why MS couldn't allow you to either use a crossover cable to link the 360 and Xbox or have a USB device that takes accepts an original Xbox memory card. Its not just Halo. How about Mortal Kombat Armegeddon, Fable, Need for Speed Underground 2, Spiderman 2: the game, etc. All the other games I have saves for on my original Box that I'd like to play on the 360. It doesn't really matter to me now as I don't think I"m ever going to fire up the ol' black and green box, but when the 360 came out I was pretty irate about it. At the time I had planned on buying one eventually but decided the Xbox was going to have to stick around so I didn't loose the saves.

You answered your own question. Microsoft knew they had some winners being released soon after the system launched (Gears of War) and probably didn't feel that it was worth looking backwards to develop something people wouldn't care about after a few months.

Well Honestly I really don't care much about Backward compatibility. Otherwise I would of waited a month for the MGS4 PS3 bundle to come out. I decided I'd rather have a PS3 now than wait a month for BC (I bought mine in mid-may)
