I was both intrigued, and a little terrified by that society.

Would certain lard arsed "celebrities" be "celebrities" today without social media?
Without a doubt it's become a heavy influence. I went to a 2 (turned into 4) hour seminar the other night on advertising on social media. They demonstrated how you can use it to get your name and products out there.
When you live in a small rural town, it's obvious why the local paper is slowly dying (aside from the fact it's owned by Rupert Murdoch and the workers don't give a ****), it's because people are turning to social media for all their news and information.
We rarely use the paper or radio for advertising at work these days, we're getting much more exposure through Facebook.
I've also seen how easy it is for businesses to be damaged via social media too, just because of one post. Especially when the SJW's latch onto it.

And Blade Runner 2049 sucked, just like the original. It was slow and boring, with an annoying soundtrack that was way too loud.

He didn't like Blade Runner 2049 AND the original.
And I have to say, I never got around to watching the original until a few weeks ago, and I found it boring too.
