MP-05 Megatron's Cosmic Rust, aka Tarnish problem (with pics) solutions inside

Sort of a pain in the ass for a toy ain't it? Why they couldn't take 3 second to apply some type of paint is beyond me. Far as I'm concerned Takara screws up just as much as Hasbro anymore.

Man, good to know in advance before buying. I was thinking about getting this guy. At least I know how to keep him nice.

Mine seemed a little spotty but I wiped it with my shirt and it seemed to shine up pretty good. Maybe mines just not there yet.

Easy tiger, no need to jump on everyone. This isnt an isolated thing, many posters have reported the cosmic rust.

Hey ya guys, just checked mine aswell and it is infected (thanks for the heads up). In addition, the metal parts forming the spine of mine Megatron appear to show rusted spots aswell, so I can only say everybody check your favorite mech (cause it would be a shame if he has to be reformatted in Galvatron in such short notice right)
edit: Just removed the rust using an anti rusting agent so to say and luckely the rust was shallow and subsequently I coated it with WD40 that should do the trick

I was thinking about the weird rust problem again today. I keep mine in gun mode, so there was no rust. But anyway, It struck me that these are probably shipped by boat, and sea air does horrible horrible things to metals.
Also, I spoke to my uncle, a watch repairer. He says that you can remove the rust with vinegar by just rubbing it onto the rusted part. But after the rust is removed, dry and wipe away any vinegar because vinegar is acidic.
And then YOU MUST CLEARCOAT THE METAL.
Like one of the guys said, Tamiya brand is excellent, but auto clear coat should work just fine. Let the part dry overnight.
He also said if we want to avoid rusting, dust more often. That might be why some of you guys are getting rust (he is in robot form, so his feet are exposed) and I dont have any (he is in gun mode)

Yeah, that was an unnecessary burn. Im sure most of the guys here take good care of their stuff. Otherwise, they wouldnt collect em.

I don't think the sea is the problem. China uses a kind of nerve gas to treat the wooden pallets where most stuff is stacked on.
This gas penetrates plastics easily and thus could cause that affect as well.

The quality of him is seriously underdone, especially when compared to prime. But prime aside, megs is definrtly lack luster in may places when there really doesn't sem any need fir it.
no rust on mine yet, but loose jointing on the cannon arm and the fact that the device meant to hold the lower and upper body together never really survives the figure being so much as picked up is really unfirgivable. If he's meant to just stand there, why not just make a statue, eh?

Just checked my Megs, and while it's not full blown rust there is some tiny little vains on discolouration - so the process of rust is starting.
I'll put him on the shelf next to Perceptor.. that should solve the problem
Nah, I'll just nick a can of CRC from work

Fingernail polish remover might be a little too abraisive... Vinegar is a prefered Method... the WD-40 works, the only issue is that you may want to use it, or any other cleaner for that matter, sparingly so as to not discolor the metal any...
Also Apply the WD-40 to a RAG first!!! Then wipe gently
Tamiya clear coat is the best, but I never thought about using automotive clearcoats on him...that is kind of a harsh substance and I don't want anykind of breakage or metal problems down the road..
Most of Citadel Miniatures, like WarHammer, and LOTR, are painted by my resident friend and "Professional" Rob.... He clear coats all of them with a fine thin layer after he paints them, and trust me, he knows what he's doing...
Just be careful what you use to clean it with, and not to use too much..you don't want a discolored foot for any reason..
Heck, I say just Clear coat all the Masterpieces!!!
Optimus should be fine for the most part, but I would apply clear coat just in case to make sure he's in great shape for the years to come, and also to keep from getting paint chipping, if your scared to do it, have a local comic shop warhammer guy do it, they excell at that sort of thing..My friend Rob said he'd tape the windows up and Airbrush a clear coat evenly over my Prime for free!!!

I think he ment clear nail polish as a "protective" the polish being the coating itself..
It'd say *NO!*
fek.. this stuff is bad for your nails.. it will be worse for chrome..

wow, to think that so many people are suffering with the same thing
thanks for all the advice guys.
would anyone be kind enough to explain how to remove the feet from the body because all i see are small pins, whats the best way to remove them? I don't have any experience with this type of thing.
also does rust spread to other diecast models? (just a little worried about my 20th op and G1 figs) need to go get some of that clearcoat stuff too.
jeez this is not the type of hassle i need while moving house, its stressful enough as it is...

Wow, and without a return policy for these, I'd have to say this is the best worst Transformer ever!

When this material fault in the toy starts to affect yours as well and you go searching for this thread or looking for answers as to how to deal with the problem,..
Please, don't hesitate to ask someone else first.
Because I for one, won't give a damn.

Of course. Moister is what mixes with air to cause the oxidization of metals. Though I didnt think chromed metals could rust, unless, the chrome has cracked or peeled away, revealing the gooey center.....mmmmm.....candy.......
Just because something is chromed doesn't mean the metal undernieth can't rust and beither bleed through or cause the coating to flake. I've seen plenty of bike and bumper parts go this way!
