Hello, everyone. I'm new here, and I just wanted to add that the feet on my MP 05 are also rusting. It's kind of disgusting, because I keep a dehumidifier going in my apartment at all times, to prevent something like this from happening. I am starting to dislike Masterpiece Megatron more and more....
I have a second one on order, and I am tempted to cancel it....

It is frustrating knowing what some went through just to get MP05, and then having to jump all these hurdles just to care for the bot. The US customs issues requiring a plug, the delicate composition of Megs, the incredibly arduous transformation, the loose joints, and now cosmic rust!

I think people will look back at MP05 as a beautiful but flawed realization of Megatron.

Can someone post a picture from the show of Megs with the cosmis rust so that we can do a back to back comparison? We must confirm beyond a doubt that this is indeed the dreaded COSMOS RUST.

Oh boy....after reading this thread I suddenly had a feeling my MISB MP-05 had rust too. So I went ahead and opened it and sure enough it had beginning stages of rust. I also noticed on my MP-05's feet there were already fingerprints! Does anyone know if Takara uses gloved hands when assembling or processing this thing? So I went ahead and gave MP-05 the WD-40 treatment. It seems like either way in box or not this thing rusts eventually, which is pretty sad for a $100-$200 toy. It seems like Takara and Hasbro are becoming one in the same. I might have to WD-40 the metal spine part too. MP-05 is a great toy just not handled well for durability.

I'm sorry to hear about this problem affecting a lot of you, I for one wont be getting this figure now (A. the price is too high and B. it rusts apparently). I hope Hasbro will wise up and put out a high grade plastic one..

You know people...

This is actually a pretty small, fairly easy to remedy problem.

Does it suck?

Yes.

Will you stop asking for metal in your toys?

Probably not.

Megatron (MP) is a fantastic piece of engineering ass. Not purchasing one due to this is just stupid.

This figure will have to be cared for over the years. He's the new G1 Jetfire.

So, get out your vinegar.

Clean your toys up and clear coat those suckers.

It's good to spread the awareness though!
Those who kept it sealed up and dreamed of turning a pretty
profit were in for a nasty surprise...And still are if they now
haveta open it to keep it from self destructing!

Hopefully the oiling works and the problem is the exposure
to ordinary air...

I Heard tell some 1973 Toyota Corollas rusted through
faster than others just because there was too much
sulphur within the batch of metal they were forged from! =)

type of material..with a whole in his heart he asked if there was anything that he could do..???

The Professional replied, Yes!! let me tell you of a Product called Tamiya Clear coat....this should fix the problem, he said... and with heavy coats of clear coat and a days worth of drying..the model was finally "almost" entirely sticky free..!!!

I asked the Professional what would have happened over time had I left it without the clear coat?? he said he was amazed that it hadn't melted or degraded in some way.. that was 7 years ago, I still have that model, and I think that the only reason it is still in perfect condition is because it's held together completely by Tamiya Clear Coat...Now I freaking Swear by that stuff!!!

WOw...that stuff works pretty good I take it? Does it work good on paint? Does it stay like soft and rubbery?

Most of the screws in new figures are stainless steel so you shouldn't have to worry about it. Same with the pins.

No, tamiya paints never stay soft and rubbery. Automotive clearcoat works just fine tool. It is made to coat METAL cars after all. I used it on my abs plastic grill and it worked fine.

LISTEN!

After further investigation today and consulting with my chemical engineer fiance, we have basically ascertained that the materials on the feet are brass.

Brass tarnishes. As best we can tell, this is not an issue of rust, but one of simple tarnish.

First try a tarnish cloth, the kind that you would use on a band instrument to simply wipe the junk off.

The Metal under the Chrome could be a cheaper grade and something in it is causing a reaction with the chrome plate.. I seen it happen on my brother chrome truck bumpers , he had to take them back and get them replaced. The chrome was turning brown and peeling up.

Well holy ****. After reading this article, I went and checked my MP Megatron, and sure enough, all of his metal parts have visibly turned yellow/gold. His feet, the metals parts on his back - you name it. And I'm in a DRY city with next to no humidity ever. I've done nothing with this figure except keep him on display with MP Prime, completely out of the sun. I haven't even transformed the damn thing (due to so many breakage reports before I bought him).

I think my sheer disbelief of this situation is quelling the anger that will undoubtedly show up in a couple more days.

Well my G1 Perceptor has completed his diagnosis of my displayed MP-05 and he has told me the following:

"He's been infected by a metallic plague. A metallic infection that wiped out entire races of robots like the black plague did to humans! It's COSMIC RUST!

The only thing that can cure it is something I invented called corristop. It is amazingly effective. Something the humans call WD-40."

As one can see from the pics. Megatron has not changed from the G1 episode 'Cosmic Rust' in his thanks to Perceptor for curing him. As for my MP-05 he is recovering well in Intensive Care. Starscream has tried twice to knock him off already!
