Ok I liked the movie, for the bots... Ill admit it. I even bought the 360 game since im such a decepticon fangirl. Anyway my question is Why is the head of Frenzy radioactive when the others are not... So in saying wouldn't Shia's character be dead from hanging out with bb? Oh... I apologize if there is a similar thread out here somewhere

It'S a bit of a plot hole in the whole movieverse.
Basically all TFs give off radiation which S7 used to track them down (Coffcoff Godzilla rippoff coffcoff) but apparently it's not deadly.

What I found funny about the RotF prequel novel is that Simmons was conducting experiments/test on Frenzy with his head bolted to a table. The "radioactivity" didn't seem to bother him in his search for answers fro the little bugger. DM is right, the radioactivity is not deadly and probably no higher than a T.V. or Cell phone, just on a different wavelength. My morning cup of coffee is likely to do more damage than Frenzy.

I also think Simmons just used that as an excuse to keep anyone from messing with his favorite test subject. :P

All the Transformers are radioactive. You just have to assume that since Sam has been around BB for two years, and the agents of Sector 7 was around Megatron for even longer, that the radiation they emit is no more dangerous than the radiation from a microwave.

Who says the others arent radioactive???

And not every type of radioactive material is dangerous.

I always took the radiation to be energon. They seem to have a constant amount of it in their bodies and any kind of energy leaks a little.

Best answer so far. Since I don't know what kind of energy comprises their actual 'Sparks' or just how sealed their spark-cores are it makes perfect sense that Energon, being their very life-blood basically would be the source of the radiation.

Care to clarify? I'm not being hostile, please--I'm a lit major and so obviously NOT a science person. I'd be curious to learn, because in my experience, radiation seems to equal bad.

Barium? Radiation therapy for cancer? (If you've seen anyone get that treatment, you know they suffer more acutely from that treatment than the cancer). Even that junk they make you drink for a CT scan makes you sick (and I don't just mean that blurky 'black cherry' flavoring). What about all those poor people who used to paint watch faces with...radium I think? They all got mouth/throat cancers and died.

Every few years you'll hear that it's not such a hot idea to stand in front of your microwave while it's running--I know some of the guys who developed the microwave (at Picattinny Arsenal--w00t!) and they all suffered some pretty awful symptoms in the long term. Cell phones haven't been conclusively linked to increases in brain cancer, but then again, they haven't been long enough for a proper longitudinal study.

If X-ray radiation was harmless, why do they slap that big lead apron on you, even just for dental x-rays?

Spending some years in New Jersey (another w00t, but smaller), I remember everyone freaking out about radon.

And don't get me started on all the scary stuff I learned in NBC (Nuclear Biological Chemical) training.

Now, mind you, I have a granite counter top in my kitchen which set a geiger counter to 'sobbing like a baby' and I'm not freaking out. It's not like I sleep on the thing, for heaven's sake. Just like I imagine (or would like to imagine) Simmons isn't cuddling with Frenzy's head (oh my god brain do NOT go there! AAAAAAAH Too late!) or that Sam is spending ridiculous amounts of time with Bumblebee. Then again, we haven't done a sperm count on either of them. I'm not volunteering.

I mean, in the Bayverse, I'll buy what someone else suggested--that maybe energon is radioactive but is benign. But I'm honestly not seeing any earthbound examples. What am I missing?

HK, I have a PhD in horribleness. Which is not science.

Every object gives off radiation, stones, plants, animals, humans ect...
But those are very minimal and mostly not dangerous the only dangerous ones are stuff like Uranium when it's been concentrated by humans for use as weapons or to make energy.
But I'm not an expert and just say what little I remember from what I learned like 5 years ago. :P

I think this should help more. I don't know I didn't read it proper.

As "Dead Metal" pointed out you would be hard pressed to find some kind of natural earth bound substance that doesnt give off some kind or radiation.

Hell even the air contains partials of different types of radiation. These levels are not considered dangerous.

I think the one thing that we have overlooked here is the fact that we need to investigate what types of radioavtive materials, either man-nade or naturally occuring, would be likely to set of a detector to the same degree that the S7 one was triggered.
Once we figure out that, then we can start exploring the possible long term hazards and better establish what should be considered 'radioactive". I mean, consider the distance from the detector Prime and the other Autobots when it started going nuts in the SUV. They had to be giving off some serious juice to set that thing off.

Yes, but all radiation is not equal. My alarm clock gives off significant EMF radiation. As does my computer.

When I brought the geiger counter home to play with, it didn't even squeak at either of those. It made a little 'blip' when I showed it my radium watch (ack! arm cancer!) and went berserk on my granite countertop.

It did not make a sound pointed at me.

If, as you say, we're just surrounded by radioactive *stuff*, then a geiger counter would be useless, wouldn't it? It would be screaming every second you had it on. And thus they probably wouldn't have had much luck 'confirming' that Sam, in the first movie, had been in contact with the alien robots by waving a singing geiger counter at him. Nor would we see the geiger scream in the next scene before Optimus grabs their vehicle.

At least that's what seems to make sense to me.

HK. I need something *evil* to do with my hair for tomorrow when I sit on conduct hearings. How hard is it to find evil hairstyles?!

Which is exactly my point. And theres no reason to assum TF's admit dangerous radiation.

No it would not.

What would be the point of designing it to react to normal levels??

A Geiger counter merseurs radiation levels outside of the norm, usually beta particles, alpha particles and gamma rays.

They are also designed only to react to particular levels of said radiations.

Think about it, if we all admit 0.25 rads of radiation, why would the Geiger counter be designed to react to 0.25 rads???

The idea of the devise is to react to abnormal levels of radiation not to all levels.

When Simmons scanned Sam with it he said "14 rad, bingo!" Anything under 100 is pretty harmless so what they give off is minimal.

Exactly. It could have no negative effects on human physiology whatsoever. My coffee has stripped paint and stain off of a concrete floor (freaked my supervisor out) and yet it PROBABLY wouldn't set off a meter. So just because something does or doesn't register on some device, that isnt saying for rock solid certain that something will or won't have a harmful effect.
It's just proving that something you can't see with the naked eye actually exists and indicates how much of it there is.

BB has been on earth longer then any other Autobot, he probably neutralized his contamination along time ago. In the first movie all the new arrivals had high radiation contamination and both Sam and Mikaela were covered with it, as S7 could verify with their geiger counter. How Sam and Mikaela got through the first movie without coming down with radiation sickness or horrible cancers and other bodily poisoning?

Two years later the Autbots have been on earth possibly long enough to have neutralized the radiation surrounding themselves but that is not explained, and NEST is formed and no one seems to be worried about contamination from Autobots. The Decepticons don't give a scrap about any fleshling, so they will come in and out of our Atmosphere as they please. Frenzy also received a good jolt from the "All Spark" which must have some radioactive energy itself. So that is why Frenzy's head is still emanating radiation. Still I wonder how Sam and Mikaela survived the radiation contamination even when they were surrounded by Autobots and even held in Prime's hand and sat on his shoulder?

Remember when Simmons made that little joke before arresting Sam, "Bingo, Tag him and Bag him!" Even Simmons knew that Radiation contamination could basically put Sam in a body bag. But 14 Rad isn't a lot. Annually humans tend to be exposed to 100mR yearly. And supposedly it's not toxic enough to kill you. But there still needs to be more study to see the long term dangers to humans. Now if you hold something thats 100mRad in your hand for an hour a day then you might be looking at a premature death or mutant children. Image
