Your story was a nice addition to this thread.
My parents even complained when I had a job and was buying my own TF's.
Cyber Bishop wrote:Just looking at that catalog made me think that 85 has to be one of the best (if not the best) years for toys ever.
Just look at the toys that year.

Man I used to absolutely love the Sears catalog when I was a kid. I used to just stare at the Transformers in those pictures.

I never thought to search for that.
this has been a great trip down memory lane.
This is probably the best forum thread I have ever started anywhere.

I did the same(with catalogues from Argos and Hamleys, we didn't have Sears). Actually I probably did it for years afterwards, because I missed out on most of the early stuff by being too young at the time. I'd be looking at those tiny images in old catalogues, trying to imagine all the stuff it could do. Of course some toys were much better in imagination than reality.
It's interesting, because a lot of stuff in those pages is forgotten today. There's a lot of periferal G1 stuff on other pages as well.

Check out items 5, 16, and 17
The Bluestreak one actually looks kind of interesting, though way overpriced for what it was back then. I actually have a transformers board game packed away somewhere.

When transformers first hit the shelfs back in the mid 80's how much were they?
I am especially curious about Optimus Prime and Megatron, but in general, I think this would be good info to include into knowledge bases dealing with transformer history.
Thanks to anyone who can provide prices, or a site that has such a listing already.
If I recall correctly, Optimus Prime and Megatron were around $22 to $25. Soundwave was around $18 to $20. Jetfire and Metroplex were around $30. I believe Trypticon was around $50. Fortress Maximus was between $80 and $100 (I can't remember). The original G1 Pretenders were around the $10 to $13 I think. Mini-bots were around $2 to $3 a piece. The combiner limbs were originally around $4 or $5. The Cassette two packs were also around $5.
Bumblethumper wrote:A good source for prices would be old catalogues. I used to have a few old Argos catalogues. Wish I had ones from the mid-eighties though. It's also a pretty good way to get a feel for an era.
Here's something a google search turned up:
The 1985 Sears Christmas Catalogue
Omega Supreme: $39.99
Grimlock: $12.99
Blitzwing: $11.99
Optimus: $23.99
Wish I could get them at those prices today!

I too would wait all year for the Sears Wishbook at Christmas page through it over and over again....
