Will gestalts encompass 5 or 6 Transformers like in G1 canon, or will we be able to create our own special gestalt teams with more or less than 5 or 6 parts?

I loathe anything post Beast Machines (haven't seen Animated yet). So, no.

However, my team has a gestalt that's made out of pretty much all the Assaultbots (11 of them to be precise :-P ), hence my question.

But it's no big deal. The core consists of 6 Transformers, so canon is fine too.

Woudln't the core be 5 (ignoring Devastator)? I think all other "big dude" gestalts--Superion, Defensor, Predaking, etc.--were 5 robots in one. Unless I'm overlooking someone. Eh, I probably am. Monstructor, Landcross, Devastator, Raiden, (Sixwing, Sixturbo, Sixliner, Sixtrain,) and Liokaiser were all six-part gestalts.

With a core of 6 I was referring to Devastator.

Those tf shows should be buried as deep as possible. At least the earlier shows didn't try to mimic G1, RID and AEC made newer and newer Optimus Primes and all of them had Megatron-Galvatron conversions... (At least their american counterparts, they say the japanese ones are a bit better)

so will rank have any use in the new version? just able to wear better armor is pretty lame. any new tactics based on rank like a "rally the troups" type thing?

It has to - if Intelligence has a secondary (or tertiary?) affect Rank certainly will at least have a tactic. Multi-Repair/Inspire per Tammuz's suggestions?

So you must hate the newer Gundam series, Marvel 1602, and Ultimate marvel, the Transformers Comics and the movie, and pretty much everything that's a AU or re-imagining of something else.

IDW has had some realli good and interesting things since taking over the francise but personally I hate some of the IDW revisions for G1ers. Bumblebee in particular is an ongoing source of anger, and i won't even touch on the whole sunstreaker/headmaster bullocks.
