If you are going to talk about Ironhide though in Ratchet :) Don't forget about both of their heads (lack there of).

The best thing had to be the variety items they used instead of just cars and planes. We had Microscopes, boomboxes, cameras, cities, and so on with no stupid gimicks!

Be also metal robots, something I miss.

The downs would have to be the lack of articulation, or worse joints that bent the wrong way. Another thing I didn't like where the extra parts like hands and guns that had to be kept seperate. I like that newwer bots in both mode have a place for everything.

G1 toys are just so iconic. Every time you mention Optimus, Megatron, Starscream, Prowl, Wheeljack, BB, Soundwave, etc., I think of the way they looked during G1. I think for many of these characters, their G1 representations stand as the best to date, with later lines usage of these namesakes going so much for something different and, often, "gimmicky", that the characters themselves just don't look as good. It's not true for EVERY G1 character and I can appreciate(hell, even look forward to) a different take on a character, but the fact that the G1 toy usually looks better tells you just how good it was.

That said, many G1ers are easily breakable despite the die cast and I prefer today's poseability and more intricate transformations.

I agree pretty much with Liege Evilmus, nice looking robots that where a variety of things.
Simple transformations are nice too, but they had such bad articulation they got kind of boring after awhile.
that’s why classics was the best thing since sliced bread  .

Best? Characters with character. Personality!

Worst? The occasional brickiness.

Worst:
- way off proportions... the bot modes often sucked. These days bot modes are a bit more proportionate
- brickiness... why bother? Ridiculous, forced modes like Powermaster Prime and Ultramagnus
- cheat transformations... things you have to attach after each transformation
- poor articulation... you really couldn't do much with toys that just had shoulder flexion/ extension and hip flexion/extension

Best:
- many different alt modes. Really idenitifiable objects and not needing to imagine too much (Scout Signal Flare anyone?)

- easier transformation - you could transform something in fewer seconds. Prime rolls right up to Megs and in 30 seconds...solid punch. These days... Prime rolls up to Megs... after 3minutes...

- tougher construction: not completely due to material, but because toy transformation didn't require very much precision, panel forming, etc. You weren't afraid of breaking something.

- no BS compromises for BS electronics

Best thing: Realistic vehicle modes and iconic characters. And there's some genuine good designs and use of colors (grimlock and Trypticon). I also like the variety of teams (comes from being made of several different toylines).

Worst thing: They are not true to the cartoon show. The lack of articulation and the fact that, as mentioned, they have seperate parts for things like fists. Although THAT is only true for the first two lines of G1.

Good: Lots of characters, variety of alt modes, easy to transform, die cast

Bad: Bricks, no poseability, looks nothing like their cartoon counterpart

For me, the best thing is the nostalgia factor associated with toys I had hours of fun with on my bedroom carpet. The worst thing for me is stickers. I know people love them but I really don't like them. I didn't like them as a child, either.

I love Kup's floppy disk drives, though.

BEST THING
- design/mold variation
- number of characters
- number of subgroups & teams

WORST THING
- lack of size consistency
- lack of articulation
- loose weapons, fists, add-on parts, etc.
- the out of left field design & color changes from TFTM onwards
- inability of 95% of the figures to look good in BOTH modes
- lack of bot modes looking anything like the cartoon/comic
- no Skyfire toy ever made

oh?

how about the following:

-Metroplex (except the scale)
-Skylynx
-Omega Supreme
-Grapple
-Inferno
-Laserbeak/Buzzsaw
-Soundwave/ Blaster
-Cosmos

i may have missed some out, but if the following do not look EVEN remotely like their cartoon counterparts, then i dunno what will.

On that note, there's one issue of the Marvel comics where they show a Bumblebee schematic on a monitor. The schematic, however, is just a line-drawing of the toy (with toy face, wheels on arms, etc.), whereas obviously in the rest of the strip Bumblebee looks like he normally does in the comic / cartoon. I found it quite odd.

Worst: They were very fragile, even when they were first released.

Best: The "rules" weren't in place. Want to use an older line's toys? Do it. What to create the biggest Transformer ever? Do it. Guns? Check. Massive combiners? Check. City bots? Check. G1 did it all and that's its real strength.

Best of G-1... it spawned the Masterpieces and set the standard from the get go.. the diecast, the paint applications, the accessories, the bases, you name it!!

Worst: Likeness and Articulation are the only things I didn't like.. but as a kid in the 80s I didn't or wasn't aware that articulation was missing.. most toys of that day had missing articulation, and the fact that i had a toy that looked like a real car and could turn into a robot... Priceless!!

The best things about G1 was that being the original TF line it could do basically anything it wanted to. For all of our discussions on the boards about newer toy lines we are, for those of us in the 20+ catagory primarily, comparing to G1. Also, we had things like basebots and realistically a smaller number of repaints comparative to recent lines. The Seekers and the Autobot cars like Prowl/Smokescreen et all being the real exception. We had a Megatron AND a Galvatron that were seperate figures, and all the gimmicks were new, we never compared minicons to *-master figures because there was nothing to compare to.

The worst is probably all the controversy that it created, like Sky/Jetfire. Who is Skyfire? And the post-86 movie figures, many of which were too blocky and cartoonish looking and were just hard to take seriously (Blurr)

I agree with the Skyfire thing, I was always wondering why he was named this.

I like the originals so much more before of childhood memories, nothing can take that away, I just wish the kids of today got to experience what the real TF's were all about, not this fancy stuff today, I think I'm a fan of the stuff today because of what they were to me as a kid. They were just so much more simplier back in the day!

I wished I had the money as a kid back then to get them all, remember beggin my mother for some TF's and they were quite expensive for 1985 back in the day, well comparable to GI JOE's. Either I could get Omega Supreme for my birthday or about 10-15 Joe's, man what a hard decision!
