You know Autobot this thread was doing just fine until you had to start insulting other members. People like you are the main reason the Philosophers Forum was closed. Why? Because you have to resort to insults instead of presenting an argument. If you don't like the topic, don't post in it. Check your PM's.

I'm not entirely sure how this helps your case, as I doubt you or anyone else is close enough to the situation to claim this is why you're laughing at it.

And, no. Speaking for myself, I've never been in so much pain that I could laugh something off.

NO ONE IS LAUGHING AT THE KID! Christ people, I wish some of you would read what is being typed. Not one person in here said "Haha, that's hilarious that the kid shoved his head underground and suffocated". NO ONE!

Everyone in here has said the same thing. Where was his common sense and where were the parents.

I have, worst pain I ever felt, having an inept doctor who didn't use enough anesthetic to make my foot numb, ended up stabbing a needle underneath my toenail, then proceeded to rip out said toenail with what may as well have been pliers. I couldn't help but laugh at the pain, did a hell of a lot better job than crying.

But it holds true, in a tragic situation some people will crack a joke just to alleviate the tension and the sorrow. Because someone has to do it.

But also, if nobody is close enough to the situation to be able to laugh at it, doesn't that mean nobody is close enough to the situation to feel bad about what happened?

I can say this was directed at me since I was the only one who posted between your last two posts. But please point out where I said someone was laughing at the kid in the post above.

Then again, that's pretty much exactly what I'm saying. It's plain with statements such as "That'll be one less Naruto fan" and "Man is that one seriously dumb kid." I'm reading what is being typed. No one is laughing at the kid? Right.... And please don't pull the old "we're laughing at the situation, not at the kid" semantics card. Splitting hairs.

It just goes back to what I originally said, anyway. We're laughing at a tragedy. If this hit closer to home to any of us, I'm sure we'd be less blasé about it.

I find it hard to believe that the kid couldn't pull himself up. 10 yr olds have pretty much developed their arm muscles enough to have the strength to push himself out. I don't mean to sound vile and inhumane, but was the kid just breakdancing with his legs and arms flailing, or did he try to pull himself up, and the other kids "Ooh, he's pretending to suffocate, what a maroon!" And Naruto's dumb like all those eerily distorted-Japanese-bigeyed-manga shows. I just hope kids don't try forcing their legs to go where their not supposed to go, hoping they turn into a car. Kids, ya know.

At the point he realized he should pull himself out, it was probably panic that prevented him from doing so.

It's a crude way of looking at it, but I suppose you could say it's natural selection. We're too well cared for to die of disease or natural cause as much as we should. I guess something's gotta curb population growth... :-?

Still, I've gotta wonder why anyone would want to stick their head in a hole, where the walls are something as chaotic as sand.

RULE NUMBER 1 OF THE DIGGERS GUIDE--

When digging in sand, dig wide and deep. Always compact walls and shave off excess sand.

Wet sand is your friend. Dry sand bad.

I've dug some amazing holes with these words.

Okay, let me ask this.
How many have read Origin of Species?
A page?
Paragraph?
Sentence?
I haven't. So unless you have, Natural selection is out of the question.
But, if you still like the idea, let's put oursleves in a jungle with nothing but us and see how long we last.

I have-- it's actually pretty archaic compared to all the theory and substance we have developed today, but Darwin gets the basics down and set the standard for the theory to come. And many seem to have had the general idea before him-- he cites many French authors. His major contribution was over 40 years of scientific, in-the-field research. I would say, however, that the general definition of "fit" is merely what keeps you alive long enough to reproduce, as opposed to other organisms and a constantly changing environment.

For mankind, it seems the big three "fit" issues are (relatively) high intellect, manipulative and adaptable body structure (biocular vision and opposable thumbs), and a socialization instinct, a pooling of numbers, if you will.

You just got +5 respect points.
As for actually reading it, bravo. I don't think I could keep concentrated. But at 14, it's hard anyway.... :APPLAUSE:
Anyhoo, I beleive you make a point.
But, like we see here, the big three you have weren't in much use. I think that the void between children and adults obviously affects said big three, therefore we will have different views on the incident. What's important is that we see both the circumstance and consequence.
Was it the complex human brain? Our intellect makes us wonder about things, and as we focus, we wonder if we can bend reality. Maybe this effect is prevalant in younger humans?
Maybe this is all "duh" stuff, I'm sure someone has said this before, so let me know if so.

Plus, this would be the case for getting about 90% shows taken off the air, especially on the basis that it teaches young kids things that just aren't true.

I should probably reword that.

Playing the stupid card meaning "Using the word stupid to liberally. Using it as the most convenient excuse for anger. Playing the card."

So in other words I'm saying people are hypocrites for saying "Stupidity should be lethal. Stupidity should be lethal." All the while doing things that are also stupid themselves.

As for americans, I am singling out only the fat, lazy, cigarette smoking ones. If I meant everyone in America I would have specified everyone.

I'm sure everyone, not just Americans, not just any specific group, has done stupid things in their lives. What's the expression? "To err is human." And the other? "There are only two infinite things: the universe and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the former." The way I think it, everybody has done something in his or her life to remove them from "the fittest." If I could only list the stupidity in my life... but, then again, I don't like embarassing myself. :P

I mean, we've all must have done one huge boneheaded snafu in our lives, whether it's from any list in this thread or not. One of those things you slap your forehead over or think hindsight is 20-20. Not just the fat, lazy, cigarette-smoking people. Not just the people who drive too fast, take things way too strenuously, get involved in the wrong crowds, or spend too much time in front of the television.

And a mistake doesn't have to be life-threatening to have serious consequences on your life.

Exactly. So therefore, nobody has the right to talk survival of the fittest and be happy for the gene pool when someone dies. That's not just laughing at the action, that really is mocking the tragedy.

How do you know they wouldn't survive without that same system in place?
Have you visited alternate realities where every other possible combination of economy and governance have resulted in the deaths of the people who post on this board?

It's gone beyond what happened to this kid. It's about fat, lazy, cigarette smoking americans playing the stupid card.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is this "stupid card"?
Is it like the "race card", or different?

Stupidity should be lethal. Stupidity should be lethal.

Last I checked it was "stupid actions of a particular order and/or sufficient magnitude are potentially lethal".
Am I reading a different thread?

As they smoke, eat McDonalds, and drive around with $4 gas.

If these things are stupid, and the people posting here are able to survive doing them, does that not make them a better breed of man/woman?
Surely someone who can survive stupid habits is well adapted to their environment.

People on the Internet seem to think all too often that, unless they spell out what they were saying a Hooked on Phonics textbook and lead everyone along by the hand, they weren't actually saying it. Puh-lease. Sorry, but as the person who opened a thread to bring up an article they thought was comical, called it "Another one bites the dust," and then said "One less Naruto fan," you'll be hard-pressed to convince me you were just laughing at the situation, especially when the only reference you made was to the kid (not the way he died). What else would you have everyone believe, that you were laughing with him? If that wasn't your intended message, please reread your posts to make sure you're coming through clearly.

Still, no matter what, my original thought stands: why are we taking any joy out of this at all?

Ok, if you want to completely ignore what you're being told and just assume that your knee-jerk reaction overrides reality, then you're welcome to do so.
