reminds me of the kid that jumped off the roof with an umbrella to fly like Harry Potter..

So a really intelligent ten year old decided it would be a good idea to have himself buried upside down in a pile of thick sand.....Yeah that was smart.

Sorry, but I find the whole thread here heartless. As a parent, I can imagine what the family is going through. Unless there's some elaborate joke I'm missing, why are we making fun of a child's death?

Save it for Fred Phelps and his ilk, not 10-year-olds with active imaginations.

Simple. How smart could he have been if he decided it was a good idea to shove his head underground?

I was into power rangers when I was ten. That doesn't mean I tried emulating it and jumping off of roofs and swinging giant knives at my friends hoping for sparks to shoot out of them.

Call me callous, hateful and a terrible person but when someone does something stupid, they deserve whatever outcome they receive. The kid purposely buried his head underground because he thought he could get powers by doing that. That's not only stupid on his part, but bad parenting as well. This just screams of the idea that his parents never bothered to inform him that you can't do that stuff in real life. Not to mention that the article seems to also point in the direction of the parents not watching what the kids were doing. If you have a 10 year old and he's playing with a bunch of his friends out in the backyard, aren't you going to keep an eye on them?

So where was the parental supervision?

I liken this to the morons that emulated Jackass and got killed and paralyzed. They saw it, thought "hey that looks cool, lets try it" and then got hit by a car or fell off 3 story buildings.

My parents taught me from an early age that TV and real life work on two different laws. One is real and one is for entertainment. If the child couldn't differentiate the two, the parents failed.

I dunno. I don't see the need for this thread but to point and laugh at a tragedy. I know you guys aren't cold-hearted like the thread would imply; I've seen you all (or at least you and homelessjunkeon) in countless other threads, so I know it's not your nature. But I can't get behind the thread.

Sure, the parenting could be to blame--I don't know it so I can't comment--or any other number of factors, but regardless of the situation, I just see this as tragic, not funny. If my kid were to die in such a way, the last thing I'd want is people laughing.

wow that is very sad, the poor kid(s).
It is really stupid to try and reenact something from a cartoon, I mean I always wanted to be Spider-Man as I was a kid, but I never tryed to be like him and swing from roof tops, but I can see why the kid wanted to try it.
I feel sorry for the parents and his friends, who have killed him, once they understand what they did they will be totaly f in the head.
And yes the parents should have kinda supervised him.

The "when i was 10" arguement is irrelevant. This kid wanted to be like his favorite cartoon, believed he could do it, and paid the ultimate price for his error.

Saying a kid deserves to die becasue he made a mistake is very cold hearted, and I pray if that if any of you have kids, and they are with there friends, that A) You have a continuous eye on your child throughout his life, which means no going to the bathroom, no time to yourself and the child grows up co dependant on you and thus hating you, or B) That you never have to deal with this.

Heres the thing though. If I do ever have a child, I'll teach him/her common sense so I don't have to watch them every waking minute. Which would have really come in handy in this situation. I mean if this were you, wouldn't the thought that this is a bad idea pass through your head?

And the "when I was 10 argument" is not irrelevant. It's called using personal experiences to better support your thoughts on a subject. And I'm saying that when I was 10, I was smart enough not to do something so inconceivably stupid as to injure or kill myself.

This is practically on par with someone watching Superman Returns and then asking their friend to take their dads gun and shoot them in the face. There are just things that you should be smart enough to know are bad ideas. This kid and his friends apparently aren't and because of that, one of them died.

Parents and media blaming a cartoon for the death of a child is along the same lines as Michael Vick claiming Pokemon was to blame for his dog fighting, or video games being responsible for school shootings, or that gays and lesbians are responsible for 9-11.

Note: Vick didn't actually claim Pokemon was to blame, although I'd find it hilarious if he did.

Anyway, what happened was a terrible tragedy for the parents and the child's friends.

However, if the parents had explained to the child that it's a cartoon, that the stuff they see on TV doesn't actually happen in real life. That kid may still be alive.

When the AvP game for the SNES came out, and I had the AvP comics from Darkhorse, I wanted to be like the Predator. He was badass, me and my friends would pretend we were predators fighting aliens. However, we were smart enough to know you're not supposed to run around killing people and removing their skulls for trophies.

Fact of the matter, the majority of kids today are dumber, more spoiled and lazier than any child who grew up during the reign of TMNT, Power Rangers etc.

So the parents aren't the only ones to blame, it's essentially everyone, including society whos to blame. The parents are to blame for not sitting down with their kid and explaining to him the difference between a cartoon and real life. The schools are to blame for making education easier and more lax than ever, in fact they're trying to abolish homework. The government is to blame for dicking with the education budget.

Now, the reason we're pointing and laughing.

This kid, as stated by his parents, was apparently "smart." Now, the only difference between this kid and a Darwin award is his age.

It's ok to laugh at idiots who die, so long as they're adults?

Like I've said before, this is a tragedy, I would never want to see any parent have to bury their child, anyone have to bury a friend.

But when you get right down to it. You get whats coming to you. If you do something stupid, and we all know we have, something bad can easily happen.

Wait... My lawyer senses are tingling...

On a more serious note, I have a hard time findidng sympathy. The fact that nobody said, "Wait, what if this doesn't work?" is what I'm still confused about. When I was his age, I had the common sense that if whatever I was trying didn't work then I would die, it wouldn't be worth doing.

Well I don't think a lock is needed. We are all being fairly civil, and not everyone is going to agree on how should view something of this nature.

Although we all agree that it is a tragedy. But it was a tragedy that could have been avoided by some common sense on the part of anyone involved, be it the parents, or the children playing.

As I see it, you are immediately seeking a halt in conversation because a different, non-insulting opinion that you personally find offensive is being voiced. I may be misinterpreting, but I like to discuss hard issues, and especially like to listen to those opinions that offend my own sense, not because it is a personal attack, but simply because it is counter to my own. Some like to face what they do not like, and, being this is a voluntary chat forum, those that do not wish to participate can just as easily turn away from discussion. I would say, as long as ad hominem is kept out of the discussion, let those that wish to discuss it discuss.

That said, though I don't get a personal thrill by having people die, and I don't believe anyone ever truly "deserves" anything, I do believe in causality. By that age, I knew what could kill me, and, at that age, my parents always kept an eye on me. So, when one goes opposite to sense and such parental precautions are not taken, it is a merely an expected matter, and, as I am not personally tied to this kid in any way, I really can't get sad when the expected occurs.

As well, I do feel agreement with much of Senior Hugo's analysis of modern culture. That would be an interesting talking point.

I understand your POV, but because alot of people don't view things in such a manner was the reason the Philosophers Forum was shut down. The manner in which this was posted was to make it humorous. Im a father, I find absolutely no humor, or any form of pleasure out of the death of a child, preventable or not.

Not all people learn the same, not all people grow up in the same enviroment. Thats all I got, I wont even look at the thread anymore.

Well there is no humor in the death of the child. There really isn't.

However, there is humor, dark humor, in the stupidity of the act that was the caused the death.

I do not laugh at the child's death. I do mourn for the parents having lost a child.

However, I do laugh at the stupidity of the act.

Like it was said earlier I dont think anyone thinks a kid dying is funny,I certainly don't. but there is something darkly funny about a world where such stupid things seem to happen on a regular basis. i also do not see why the thread should be locked , IMO.

at 8 all i wanted to be was Batman, but jumping off the kitchen counter was as far as i ever took it.

PS why were the parents not there watching the kids, BTW?

George Carlin said it best, "it's natural selection, the kid that eats the most marbles doesn't have kids of his own"

I sucks hearing that a little kid died. But lets face it, if your here, you were realy into cartoons as a kid, and most likely even acted them out. I'm sure no matter how much you hated it, you still understood the reality behind them though.

Hell, I wanted Jayce's ring from Wheeled Warriors, even made something that looked like it. That didn't mean I believed it worked!

Now again, a child dying is sad. However if you realy believe burying your head in sand will make you become sand...

...well, is the world realy missing out?

Just today I saw one of those video shows where a kid CHOOSE to light himself on fire and ride a bike off a ramp. He droped from the ramp like a stone and ran around in a circle like the idiot he is :D

Now I'm not sorry, but if your that dumb, you deserve it, you did it to yourself.

Now heres the down side.

The parents who have children and cant imagine their kids falling to the same fate. You people are gonna screw the world up even more by feeling bad.

Sand Boxes, a timeless childhood toy, get ready to go the way of fireworks and lawndarts.

Fiction, get ready for another sugar coating.

Kids, I'm sure they'll find another place to put more padding, so you'll never have to deal with a booboo again, making soon to be released Optimus ice packs a true shelf warmer.

To these parents I say, love your kids, teach your kids, be kind to your kids, but most importantly, smack them in the back of the head!

See if a kid never takes a hit, they'll never know that pain is bad. If they don't know that pain is bad, more of your whiney idiot brats are gonna kill them selves and **** it up for the majority born with common sense.

I know you think your doing good, but over pampering and over protecting is the worst thing you can do for a kid, and that leads to stuff like this.

Don't blame the show, blame the untaught ability to tell reality from fantasy!
