Back in season 1 they didn't really know where they were going and the writers didn't create an ending because they didn't know how long the show would be running. Basically ABC told them to stretch the story (this is why season 2 is the weakest season) for as long as they could because ABC wouldn't establish a fixed ending.
The producers (Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse) have stated that they figured out where the story would be going between seasons 1 and 2 though. So they
do know where Lost is heading and have known for quite a few years now.
All that was left for them to do was get a fixed ending of the show (2010), so that they could spread the remainder of the story across the remaining time.
