Do you consider collecting TFs nerdy??

Feel free to discuss anything about any of the thousands of Transformer toys here. Anything from Generation 1 all the way to the soon to be released, the never to be released or the hope to be released is fair game! Want to show off your stuff? Please post your's and see others in the Transformers Collections Forum.

It's a bit nerdy. But I don't care anymore--I'll buy Transformers wearing a Transformers t-shirt. I went to the movie in a TF shirt. So what? At least I have a hobby I love. I denied my inner nerd for too many years--it's so much happier on the outside.

Your profession, Your Income, Your Familial Status, or Your
Social Standings do not protect you from the truth; While some
of us may be nerds, we are all geeks.

Thanks to the good ol' dictionary:
Geek:
1: A carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act
usually includes biting the head off a live chicken, bat or
snake
2. A person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked
3.enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity"

While I'm willing to bet few of us are carnival performers,
many of you mention work in the IT field. And though we may not
all be experts, we all must have some degree of enthusiasm for
the hobby, or why would we all be here?
TFWIKI wrote:According to Hasbro, toys that represent flying characters are given more stringent drop tests and rounded/collapsible bits, as children (and the kind of adults who buy Transformers, actually) are more prone to throwing these figures around or ramming them into things (or people).

Collecting those things are "nerdy" as well... Collecting in general, you'll always find someone that thinks your collection is ridiculous, another that wishes they had it, and the last that could take it or leave it.

I can tell you the exact moment I realized I had no shame buying toys. Just so happened I had a legit reason too.

I got off of work one morning about 3:30 am, went to Wal-Mart to buy something for my niece and nephew who were coming into town. I didn't want them breaking my stuff.

As it was, I picked up a couple of Ninja Turtles for my nephew and a few Barbies for my niece. I also picked up some kickboards for them to use in the pool. Since I was hungry, I also got a couple of those microwave beef stew deals and a case of Cherry Coke.

I walked up to the register, all sweaty and dirty from work... the woman starts ringing up my items, coke, stew, Leonardo, gets to the first Barbie and looks at me kinda odd. Without even thinking, the first thing to come to my mind was "Leo and I are entertaining the ladies tonight."

No doubt I went into a database that night, but I don't reckon I care.

Being a "Geek" or "Nerd" is a very relative thing.
Because most people have their own definitions of the words,
and there's the dictionary definitions.

Personally I think their definitions are

Nerd: someone who is well versed in a subject(s)
they know a lot or everything there is to know about the subject(s).

Geek: some who is obsessed about something and doesn't care about if the majority is interested in it or not, sometimes can be taken to extreme cases where they care for not much else.

I consider myself to be both of these,
of coarse I think there's also the traditional stuff that if you like it your probably a nerd and/or geek.

everyone is a nerd or a geek in their own way. whether it be wrestling, football, comic books, or transformers, some are just more socially accepted than others.

Even if we are "nerds" or geeks" I don't think either word carries the same negative connotation that they had in the past.

Honestly, the only time I've heard the word "geek" used in the past five years is to affectionately refer to someone; no pejorative meaning whatsoever.

And I can't even remember the last time I heard ANYONE referred to as a "nerd."

I think you're reading into it a bit much. I'm just saying that what Westerners see as 'nerdy' and 'geeky' is, for the most part, more accepted in the society I come from.

That makes Ozzy Osbourne officially a geek! Those of you familiar with him will know what I'm talking about.

Which brings me to another point - I'm a music geek. That's my other main hobby. I love all types of music - rock to rap to country to electronica to jazz. I've played guitar for over twenty years and I tend to annoy people with the seemingly random factoids that I can spew out on command about my favorite artists and songs.

So, my geekiness extends beyond my TF and GI Joe collections. That's just who I am. If I'm interested in something, I want to know as much about it as I can.

That's true of my professional life too, and it's allowed me to excel at every job I've ever held. So, if I'm a geek or nerd - that's fine b/c it pays the bills and allows me to feed my family, put a roof over their heads, and TFs in the toy box. 8)

I'm like that too! I have an obsessive quality and I do anything I'm interested in to the max. It's good when you can make money at it. I learned a LOT about TF in a VERY short period of time, as soon as I realized that it was something I liked. I have a decent Star Trek obsession too. :-B

What I find interesting is that if you collect Transformers, or any of the previous lines I mentioned then you are often considered a nerd, yet if you buy and display Wrestling toys you dont... go figure.

 Don't look in my closets

I used to have a room full of mine and my husband's comic collections, three walls covered with MIB figures by series and in chronological order of appearance (X-men and Star Wars.)

I do still have a book shelf of all my Godzilla figures (all lovingly kept in pristine and chronological order), and of course, Gojira 1954 sits proudly atop my monitor to keep me company. Along with the very few TF's I've been able to find (supposedly hubby's old ones are in a box in some mysterious disappearing attic in never-never-land)

Proud to be an educated nerd.

And don't get me started about my Reaper mini's. I have so many half-naked elves it boggles the mind.
