History of Heavy Metal War, for the new guys

with all this talk about popular weapons I've seen no mention of why they were so popular.
Basically there are two types of weapons no-recharge and short recharge. Where with no-recharge every attack is with the weapon and short recharge you punch kick while a weapon is recharging. Basically there was a bug in the code where no-recharge weapons never missed which is what made things like the sword, vibro axe, sar, mecha fangs, and twin swords so valuable. Once this bug was fixed those pretty much died out.
Way back in the days of only 4 active transformers (basically july 2003-nov 2003) it was possible to enter transformers into the arena or missions without actually being active (so you could use more than 4 even though legally you were limited to 4). Also it was easy to manipulate URL's, as already mentioned, to cheat. Now that was taken care of, and further insurance was given with the passcodes, which have recently disappeared during some debugging of site slugishness I believe, and never bothered to reinstate them...perhaps because the passcodes were around for so long that anyone who needed to write scripts to play for them had already conquered the passcodes or given up and fallen so far behind that they wouldn't bother playing anymore...regardless this seems like a relative non-issue now as does account sharing and multiple accounts which were both popular, or at least appeared to be going on alot. Ideally there are plans to make this more difficult in V2 with a kill them first ask questions 2nd approach.
Initially the high scores only ever listed the top 25 players, and had an all time and active list...so you could see what everyone was doing from the list...I used to just hope the top players weren't playing so I could see myself in the top 25 active. A few times I got screen captures of myself at #1 in the top 25 because I was the first person to get on after an outage...speaking of which the game used to get very slow everyday back in the early days starting around 2-3 pm central time (seibertron time)...basically the time all the kiddies were getting out of school. Those problems have mostly resolved themselves, but still manage to creep up every once in awhile.
My personal quest to reach #1 finally game around end of Oct. 2005. Basically took it over despite getting banned a few times for accusing others of cheating, which was finally proven. Of course, I wasn't completely clean myself in that several of us tried the whole missions with all repairers because we saw the xp it could produce. All in all gained about a weeks worth of experience from those fights but attempted to right the damage by resting my character who joined those fights for a week (about how long it would have taken me to earn that xp). After the initial fights, it was made explicit that those conjurred up battle were wrong (though we certainly felt a little uneasy about it being right, we chose to test ryan's motto of "if the game allows it, you can't be faulted for doing it")...though it's certainly not something I'm proud of in this game. These 3-4 battles resulted in a public decree by the mods saying these fights were illegal, and eventually led to the retreat function. Several months after it was made explicitly known, but before the retreat function was in place, others continued to do them and faced the consequences. Whether that was the sole reason they were kicked off or it was combined with proof of multi/shared accounts I'm not even sure.
Anyway, through at least two big xp resets, an outage lasting several months, and for me a summer long ban for questioning the character of some players, this game has improved tremendously. I'm not nearly as addicted as I once was, and I'm also not as in tune with the daily goings on on the discussion board, but those are both for the better I believe. The game is fun, and has had it's crap in the past, and I'm sure stuff will come up in the future, but what I've seen time and time again that out of the crap in the past improvements to the game have been made. I'm excited for V2, I'm sure I won't be #1 anymore, and heck don't even know what faction I'll be (y'all can start recruiting me now), but from what I've seen the past few months, I'm confident it will be even more fun than V1.0 thru V1.99999.

You aware you now the target of the recruiters aka faction mascots as I think of them well more like the Maximal one anyway.

I remember when a brawling rammer configuration easily was on par or above anything with weapons in arena and even missions at times. Back then weapons were just overrated and combine with iron bug the extra strength lead to making weapons useless against said configuration as well.
Think I might remake the brawler Master Tech for V2 and see how it works this time around.

I'm curious though, what's happened in Heavy Metal War since its launch, its most controversial moments, moments when the masses cheered for a new feature, etc.
If anyone has anything 'memoriable' to say about this game during its history, would you mind sharing your stories to us.
I'm curious is all, and I'm sure others are.
We usedta only be able to put in 4 bots at a time. Then it went up to 6. Some people think it should go up to 12. I think it should go up to 6. But no one listens to me.

Can anyone name all of the Mods and prefer in order but just a list would be good. Those poor mods had to put up with all sorts of things throughout the years. Sadly, I wonder how much gratitude they are shown for their dedication.

War Hammer
Galvatron Prime
Mkall
Caelus
With Glyph and Omega Sentinel taking up the programming side of things.
And I have a vague memory about Red***** (we're not allowed to say his name otherwise he may reappear) being a Mod of the HMW forums when they first started.

Ok. Now I am officially frustrated!
I have a word file that contains a fairly comprehensive "history" of HMW from the very begining up to DT. That file is on my computer.
My computer is at Altex and has been the for the better part of a week!
Anybody here remember the name "Max Sterling"? He was the original Number One and the first to reach levels One and Two IIRC.

MP started as just a Mod. Alpha Strike was one of the first, if not the first, player to become a Mod. I become a mod some time after that when the whole Red***** thing went south. Once I left, I actually came back for a short time after, then Warhammer. Mkall took over after that then Caelus. Of course Glyph was replaced, for lack of a better term, by OS.
Did I forget anyone

From what I remember, there was new clans starting up every other hour, which triggered a lot of flame wars. Right when I started playing was the big whoops, which wiped me out. All clans except AWC and RDD where shut down. The game was shut down and brought back up twice if I remember correctly... There where a few touraments before DT, that the Cons won. Prior to DT was the mass defection to balance out the game somewhat. In the fall out of DT, some people left. Some seem to have returned. Things went to pot on the forums. Then somethings happened that I wasn't here for. While I was gone, Glyph left, OS took over, MP left, as did Warhammer. The RDD and AWC seemed to have undergone a lot of restructing with their leaders. Then the Quintisons attacked and became drug dealers for the Autobots. Which was all according to the Fallen's plan. Now, we're just waiting for HMW 2 to start up, and hopefully we get to send out this version with a bang.

On a side note, when I stepped into this role 7 months ago I realized I was getting into a nearly no-win situation. The new version had been delayed for years, the community was fractured and the forum was near dead. On top of that, I was replacing a programmer that was well-liked by most of the players.
I was a wee bit short stacked coming into this game as the developer.
My commitment to all of you as well as Seibertron was that this game would move forward no matter the costs. I'm sure I will go down in HMW history as probably the most hated programmer. On the bright side, this will also go down as the year HMW saw the most progress it has ever seen and it will become the new game everyone has been wanting.
We are all in the midst of HMW history right now. A revolution of sorts. A year from now we will be be talking about what it was like before maps and minicons and automated tournaments.

Honestly, I recall no hate towards you OS. I was confused, personally, but I never saw any hate. From what I can tell, you looked at the players for feed back and made judgements that would ultimately, and hopefully, better the game.

"Hate" is such a strong word.
"Not agree with the direction of certain things" seems more appropriate.
I do however agree with the direction of most things though.

Nope. But, in general, people tend to be pricks, especially where change comes in. It's new, it's different, it's evil and must be destroyed. But that's kinda why I haven't sent you any PM questions, though I've been dieing to ask.

I'm just hoping it all works out. Though, I'm glad some of the level issues where finally addressed, that was one of my biggest gripes. But, I'm reserving judgement for the final product.
