I have moved this thread to the Philosopher's Forum. It is my hope that the rest of the conversation in this topic can happen in a much more civil and respectful manner. I don't have a problem with people on the opposite side of the political fence but I do have an issue with people being rude, disrespectful and impolite.

So far, Obama has surprised me, and pleasantly so.
I think in his heart, regardless of which side of the fence he's on, he's simply a good and decent man. Which is exactly the type of person we need in the office. Someone with a clear head and an open heart.

His inauguration speech was incredible, and showed how much class the man has.

I did, not however, care for the second prayer with the racial jargon in it. I felt like it was an attack on all races but African based. Some of it was humorous, but all in all it kinda felt like a jab.

But it showed how far removed Obama is from that type of thinking, and just how much awesomesauce pumps through his veins.

If you could get a transfusion from the man, there'd be so much cool dripping off of you it'd form icicles.

Just to add to what you said about that second prayer...

The words and phrases in it were from a (really) old song. The guy that did the prayer was making reference to it and to be honest, I don't think he had a clue that it could be taken the wrong way. I think be believed himself to be clever in doing it.

Not defending it or decrying it. Just seemed like one of 'those crazy old guy things'.

Well, I might be jumping in late, but I think he's done well in his first 100 days. Despite having people desperately wanting him to fail just so they can save face...I will freely admit, I wanted Hillary to get the nomination, but in hindsight, I must say i was wrong. Hillary would have been an improvement over McCain, and DEFINITELY an improvement over Bush, but I don't think she would have done enough, because she has been around too long as well. Obama is truly a breath of fresh air. Now, here's hoping all his dealings don't blow up in his face.

I agree he's done well, but there are a few things that worry me...

Many folks say his healthcare plan is Socialized Medicine.
He's trying to make peace with Cuba (a Communist land).

I dunno, I sincerely doubt he's trying to head in that direction, but you have to admit it's a bit suspect at first glance.

If we could make peace and friends again, great. I'd love for their to be a happy planet once again, but I'm not sure it's possible.

Ah well, I'll shut up now so I don't get flamed.

I think it's great that he's reaching out to Cuba. True, it's not the end of the world if it doesn't work out, but for the last 50 years Cuba has been in sort of a bubble. With the decline of Communism and the implosion of the USSR, Cuba was kind of left hanging, because the other Latin American countries don't really care. I mean, I think they do minimal trading, but things are so poor in Cuba is because they don't have much trafficking of goods (and I don't mean "goods" wink wink) so whatever little money they get, the government immediately gobbles it up, so the people have nothing. I think opening up trades and tourism would ease their economic plight, and the US might get a few good things out of it. Especially now, since Fidel is no longer in charge. I am not sure if his brother is better or worse.

As for medicine...I don't think Socialism is the way to go, but I do think Obama is more liberal and tends to nudge in that direction. That might be one of his few faults. He's a bit way too out there. But Socialism won't happen in the US, because too many people would oppose it.

And why would you get flamed? This is the forum in which flaming doesn't exist. Right?

Well to be fair, Nixon went and made friends with China, even though China was still communist. I don't think trying to make peace with an enemy country is something to be criticized for.

Just a quick aside from someone who lives in one of the many First World Nations that has Socialized Medecine...

Seriously, it's not the end of the universe. And even so, Mr. Obama is exceptionally center-right compared to the worldwide political spectrum. You really have nothing to worry about in either case. Don't let those idiot windbags at Fox News scare you, they wouldn't recognize real Communism if it bit them in the hindquarters and invited them over for Borscht.

In America, healthcare makes up about one-sixth of our economy. If you nationalize healthcare, therefore, you nationalize one-sixth of the economy. Combined with the various financial institutions that are already nationalized, not to mention GM, which appears to be tumbling into the same fate, and you've got what...maybe a quarter of the entire U.S. economy under government control? Maybe more like a third?

That's a little bit terrifying, considering how poor a job our elected officials do of representing us and how fond Obama seems of using appointed officials to do his bidding rather than going through the legislative branch as the Founding Fathers intended.

I'm defintely a little late on this one, but from what I've seen I have to say its one great big circus.

I was at work when we heard the word he'd one, people were going nuts, I asked one guy why he was so happy that Obama got in, his reply "Cos he's black!! there's a black man in the white house".

Yeah, well, Robert Mugabe is black too.

Skin colour shouldn't determine his place.

Frankly, I have to say, my principles do not match up to his lack of them and I think he's morally repugnant.

Without wanting to start another giant debate on this, I do have to say he can either end up being the most hated president by not getting you guys out of the hole the last decade has dug you in, or he can end up being the most loved.

But seriously, how many voted for him because of the idiots in Hollywood? Of Oprah? Of his skin colour? How many know what he supports? What is solutions are? All I've heard is "yes we can"

Can what?

I'll reserve my final judgement for four years time.
Something memorable here.

Well, there's the people who voted for Obama because Sarah Palin clearly wasn't ready to be anywhere near the White House.

Then there's the people who actually listened to him and DO know what he supports.

There's the people who voted for him because he's a Democrat, and so are they.

The people who voted for him because he's a Democrat, and they're dissatisfied with the job the Republican's have been doing for the past eight years.

And then the people who voted for Obama because of his race would be a small percentage.

Those my 3 reasons. Out of the ones you posted. But mainly because I think george Bush was a lying, stealing, murdering warmonger, and he was an idiot to boot. I consider myself a moderate, and in no way did I support Obama until he got to the nomination. I was a supporter of Hillary Clinton. Honetly, I think if McCain picked someone other than the Barracuda, he might have won. Or, maybe not. As record number of blacks turned out to vote, ONLY because Obama is black. I do think he will fare better than any Republican would have, as Republicans have some seriously misplaced priorities. I can't remember how many times Bush said he was guided by god, but to so blatantly disregard the separation of church and state, was one of his biggest offenses against the US Constitution.

Obama is more to the left than i would like, but it's still better than what we've had. And yeah, Oprah needs to STFU.

So, I hear Obama has done a few back flips of late regarding Guntanamo and those photos of further abuse.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out. But while watching a few of the news chanels, I notice that the media while pointing out the back flip, are being very nice about it. They would have, and did, crucify Bush for such boo-boos.

As it is, I think History will judge Bush more kindly, he may have done some intellectually distressing things, but all up, he did do some good.

(I'll let you guys know what when I find it...)

...but come on, he just tried so hard and he never gave up, most people would be like "Ah, bugger it!" and go have a smoke out by the boss' car.

Because Bush is a lying sack of **** and deserves to be crucified. I just hope he doesn't come back 3 days later.

Well, I think the real evil here were Dick Cheney, John Ashcroft, and Karl Rove. All of them got away with what they did, and Bush is getting **** for it. Which is fine, because he was the person in power, he could have stopped all the crap the Republicans were doing. But everyone knew Cheney was too scary to get elected, which is why they picked Bush to run, and the Cheney took over behind the scenes. Even now he's stirring up ****.

Its not that he's back flipping that bothers me, because all politicans are scumbags, my issue is with how he ranted and raved and sold himself and his campaign on "change" and "hope" and "honesty" and "stuff", yet when push comes to shove he's just like every other politican out there.

But will the media be on his arse like flies on **** when he messes up?

Not at first. We have to get over the whole "Wow! Our first black president!" issue. Don't get me wrong, I've nothing against a person of a different racial (or mixed as he is) background being our president. I wouldn't care if he was purple for cripes sake.

Once that hurdle has been jumped, the next one will be "Well, he's not Bush!" which will take a while.

No, they'll pull a Clinton on the man. Get him for everything he did wrong near the end of his run in office, not when it was most important to make him face the music.

And you're right, he's just like any other politician. I never expected anything else.

He reminds me of a politician that approached my grandfather years ago. He said, and I quote: "You want lower taxes? I'll give 'em to you. You want better jobs in this town? I'll get 'em for you. Actually, none of that was real. I'll tell you nothing but bullshit and yank your leg until you get me into office, and then do none of what I promised once I'm in there, but at least I'm being honest with you."

My grandfather voted for the man, and so did many others, he won by a landslide. He turned out to be one of the best County Commissioners in the last 60 years. Ended up being honest and going straight after being in office long enough.

So yeah, to have Barack kiss rump to get in, and then do nothing afterwards is expected. He's a politician. They're bred to lie.

That's why we needed someone like Joe The Plumber to run for office. Some local yokel idiot who lives like the rest of us, who knows what the people really want because he's actually one of us.

Bush proved you need not be intelligent to get the job, so that concern's out the window.

But they've all proved that money talks, bullshit walks, and we'll pick the worst of the worst to run the best of the best, and then we sit around crying about "I can't believe it's ended up like this..." and not a single thing changes. NOT ONE.

Probably not. Afterall, he is black. And they don't want to be construed as racist. Yeah, I know. This may seem like too easy of a reason, but if he was attacked fearmongering parasites such as Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson will immediately say "oh, it's because he's black!" But, as you said, bottom line, he is a politician. He will cover his own rear first.

Well, of course. Fox News is a bunch of conservative nutcases stuck in the 1800s who can't stand a liberal. Obama is a bit too liberal for me as well, but I still agree with him on more than i do with Republicans. Conservatives are still pissed they couldn't politically ruin Bill Clinton, so they're trying to go after any and all liberals.

the fact i actually lived to see the day a black african american would become the next U.S. president, the fact it happened on martin luther king jr day or the fact that aretha franklin actually was there to sing at the time

The President was named on November 2nd, and inaugurated on January 20th. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was on January 19th, and is typically observed around that time.
