Iron Man Movie "Prototype" Figure Review (Now with pics)

Went out today to see what TF's I could find. Haven't been able to get my hands on a Movie Cliffjumper. And Am looking for an All Spark Big Daddy. Neither which seem to have made it to my local Wal-Mart yet.

However I was walking down the toy aisle, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a section of the aisle devoted to Iron Man Movie merchandise.

There were quite a few figures. Iron Monger, Mach 1 armor(the original armor he builds in captivity. Mach 2 which is just a gray version of his normal armor however it has 2 spring loaded hand held missile launchers. Mach III the normal gold and red, with one launcher. Buried behind all that i find one that is labeled strangely Prototype Iron Man.

Basically Iron Man with bits of armor missing. And something in me sparked. Now since R.I.D when I started collecting TF's again, I've never picked up anything else but Transformers. But this guy just called to me. He looked cool. And being the big Iron Man fan I am I picked him up.

He's a pretty cool figure about 6 or 7 inches tall. Painted in Iron-Man's default colors Red and Gold very shiny too. However it wasn't the paint that made be buy it, but the fact that he has that extra something: Cool accessories.

He comes with a removable chest piece. That reveals silver detailing when its not on. I would guess its a mix between mesh and circuitry. Looks pretty cool actually. The chest piece is not solid plastic but a bit rubbery in feeling and softer. It bends quite a bit.

In the center of the chest he has a small removable power cell, and a second cell you can swap at will. One of the cells is blue and the other one is yellow. He has a button on his back that you can press to push the power cells out so you can swap them.

He comes with 2 sets of forearms/hands. A human set with no armor, just pinkish, with one hand in a fist and the other one in a kind of pointing position. And a set or red armored hands which are fully opened, palm exposed and feature 2 small repulsor rays molded onto the palm.
They detach just under the elbow, and stay on very securely when snapped in.

A set of removable shoulder armor is also included.

He also comes with a removable helmet. Which is also soft and rubbery, but fits quite snugly on the head, and when removed exposes a face that tries to resemble that of Robert Downy Jr. albeit not very successfully. Still the head is nicely detailed with the sculpted hair and the beard.

Pretty good articulation, with the double jointed knees and elbows. Ankles are on ball joints so have quite a bit of movement. Head can rotate 360 degrees however it cannot look up or down. Waist is a solid piece. It would have been nice if they had give him the extra swivel joint there.

Overall a pretty nice figure. Since I'm not really familiar with the human figures form Marvel I can't really compare it to anything, but I will say I really liked it. If you like marvel figures you'll like this one. I specially liked the accessories. Which most TF's nowadays lack

There was a Stealth Armor featured on the back of the packaging in the Also available section that also caught my eye if only because it reminds me of War Machine more than anything else. If I see it I'll probably pick it up.

I'll post some pics of it tomorrow.

Dude, I wish I knew they were out sooner. I was at Walmart yesterday and didn't see anything.

But of course, they were in the middle of resetting everything again. That and I was pretty hot after getting into an agrument with a stupid employee there. They had about 20 of those Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mini toys teetering on top of the pegged toys. It was about 8 feet off the ground. I wouldn't have had a problem with it if I hadn't had to pull a young kid out of the way when all of the overstock came crashing down. And guess what, an employee was standing there laughing. I hate walmart...

So anyways, does anyone know if they are going to put out the War Machine figure they had on the website? I've always liked him better than IM. I'm looking forward to the Mark 1 or grey Hulkbuster, maybe the Mark 3, and the villian guy.

I found them by pure luck.

I was walking out of the toy section towards the furniture aisles and passed the leftover Pirates of the Caribbean clearance stock and then suddenly I find myself attacked by literally hundreds of different sized Mach 5's from the Speed Racer movie line.

how many different sizes of the same car can they make.

Still they where there between Power Rangers and the Mach 5's

not too many mind you I would say it was barely the contents one or 2 boxes of Iron Man stuff.

I did not know they were out either. But Seeing as the movie is now 1 month away from being released. Its sounds about right for them to start releasing the movie stuff. But hey it was a nice surprise.

I'm not sure. I don't own any Revoltech figures.

Its a sphere, with a secondary swivel through the middle of it.

I'll post a close up pic tomorrow.

Damn. He does look like Dante from Clerks.

I saw the Silver Centurian/Repulsor Red Prototype last week. He looked pretty good. I almost picked him up but had a odd feeling I should hold off. Turns out the feeling paid off as I was able to find 3 figures from another line I've been looking for. I do intend to pick him up eventually as I like the line and the Mark II/III mold.

The Prototype figure I've been wanting since I saw him. I ended up picking up the Mark III instead. Hopefully Wal-Mart will put the figures out soon so I can get that and some of the others I want. Hopefully Hasbro plans to expand the line to add other Iron Man armor and villains like they did with the Transformers movie line.

To answer you Shadowman, it's a regular ball and swivel joint like most other Marvel Legends have. So think of a Revoltech joint without the clicking.

I was thinking, and I'm sure someone with kitbashing skills could kitbash him into a Silverhawk. Maybe Commander Stargazer or Copper Kid. He's already got the human hand there, so its just a matter of repainting and maybe a little sculpting in the helmet and the face to get rid of the beard and hair for Commander Stargazer.

Well today I able to snag a Stealth Iron Man from walmart and a Power punch Iron Monger from K-mart. I hate to say this but I was no impressed with either one.

War machine or stealth IM there was the one I wanted most. But as I got him out of the package, his shoulder pads fell off. It looks like they just sat on top and hoped 2 tiny pegs held the maleable plastic in place. His arm blasters, while showing clips, just slide over his tiny hands and wobble around. I was not able to get them to snap into anything or even come close to binding with the arm until it hit the elbow joint.

The rest of the figure was alright.

Iron monger. Sweet. Looks menacing and it's heavy. Power punch - Squeeze the legs and the arms rotate up or down and the waist turns. Well, this ruins the figure. The figures right leg is unable to move at the hip. I thought it was a problem with mine until I watched the punch feature. The leg has a tab that activates the figure, one long piece from the leg up into the body. That sucks. Ankles and knees bend but you can't move one leg anywhere.

If I had seen the Mark 3 or even the mark 1, I would have rather had them. Sorry about he negative remarks about those guys, they just severely disappointed me. I expected better.

Hence why you should have waited for wave 1.5 Iron Monger. Correct color scheme, the chest section opens up and there are no spring loaded gimmicks.

As for War Machine and that mold in general, the shoulder pads are all like that. They did that so if you were so inclined, you could remove them so his arms could be lifted all the way up at that joint.

As for the wrist guns, just slide them up onto his forearms. They'll secure pretty well there and don't come loose easily.

Sad really, I was looking forward to the Stealth Armor (WM).

I'd probably leave the arm blasters off. But what I really want to know is do the shoulder cannons stay in place properly.

As for the Iron Monger again a case of the sacrificing the figure's articulation for a gimmick. Fortunately I wasn't planning on getting Iron Monger any way.

I wasn't planning on getting him either, i thought he was a Mark 1. Dumb me. lol. And If I knew there was a second Monger, I wouldn't have got this guy. Oh well, live and learn.

Stealth - My cannons stay in place really well. I can't guarantee how they will hold up over time but the only problem I have with them is they tend to pop off of the tabs or whatever that are when I move them from the back to his shoulders. Nothing major.

If your Walmart is anything like mine is, you'll have no problem finding him. Now, if you wanted anybody else, then you would have a problem. Man, I couldn't believe my cruddy one only had IM toys in one place. Some display in the middle of the bike section. It had s2 sides devoted to the mask and gauntlet set, another side had the oversized IM, and the last side was nothing but War Machines. Maybe 50 of them. Kinda made my choices limited. lol. But they did have TF movie Overcast though so it wasn't all that bad. lol.

Good hunting!
