And most importantly of all, not brick-like. ;)

Wholeheartedly agreed. :D

Out of curiosity, is this figure still available at Toys R Us anymore? I see them on eBay at prices roughly equal to the Takara-Tomy version.

Nope.

It was barely available at TRU to begin with (had to get mine off Amazon).

Ouch, that sucks. I hope you got a reasonable price from Amazon. I ended up signing up for e-mail notifications from the Toys R Us website. Twice, I missed restocks of Masterpiece Optimus Prime. The next time I got a notification, I was on break at work. I got online and managed to get one.

I checked the site eight minutes later when my break was over.. gone.

A lot of G1 Transformers may be crude, and I'm not willing to pay e-bay prices for many of the figures because of their simplicity, but dang it if they ain't fun to pick up once in awhile. There is a certain charm to G1 that can't be found too often in modern transformers, and sometimes it comes down to gimmicks and alt modes, or even just simple but fun engineering.

I don't know. I wanted Countdown for the longest time, ever since seeing him when I was a kid.
I finally got a deal on a boxed one, and there's no way I could get rid of it.
It's forever awesome.

I still get that pit of excitement in my stomach when I look at my G1 figures, especially Prime, Magnus, Megatron and Soundwave.

Isn't Countdown awesome? I have that thing and I LOVE it. The size, the alt mode, the colors. All win :). It reminds me of the old Diaclone vehicles like the Diaclone train and the Cosmo Roller (both of which I own).

Not sure what the appeal to Countdown is. I mean, sure, lunar rovers are kinda cool, but he's pretty average for any Micromaster. :|

Same here, I've had a falling out with original G1 toys for a long time now. You can really see their age.

Sure some of them look kinda nice in pictures and commercials, but I get an aneurism every time I read or hear someone stating how they are superior to modern iterations.

I mean I burst out laughing at AA once when I got to see G1 Cyclonus, Galvatron, and Scourge in person. I mean I've had Galvatron in hand before, but seeing all three of them grouped together just made me burst out laughing. Sure the plastic colours on guys like Cyclonus have a really, really nice quality to them, but that's all they have, that and memories.
Today they mostly just look awkward and often times silly.

I've gotten rid of some of my G1 stuff, and I'll be getting ridd of the rest as well. Well, save for Powermaster Optimus, since he's very special to me, but he'll be banished to the shelf of oddities once he's out of storage again.

It's only MP from now on.

Hehe, it's the actual big blue Launchpad+rocket that I like, not the dinky little Micromaster figure itself ;).

Yeah, I haven't played with my Micromaster sets in city mode really. I just like them in their alt modes. I have Countdown and Groundshaker. I had Groundshaker as a kid and always loved that thing. I wish they'd do a modern version of him where the big six wheeled tank turns into a big bad bot. Maybe someday they will :).

They did do Countdown (sort of) after all (great repaint/toy by the way):

Awesome set (Countdown). Only complaint is the discoloration of the white rocket.

Yeah, mine's pretty pristine white thankfully. I got it complete for a fairly reasonable price on ebay, most of the stickers in decent shape too. I display it with my Groundshaker, Diaclone Cosmo Roller and Diaclone Train. It seemed fitting given their similar styles and color schemes.

No way. I love my nostalgic collection. Maybe just me but I think it laid down the platform for future toys. But I do really like the generations line a lot.

And now? I dunno. I'm a bit sad, because I realize that when I look at them now, they're ugly and crude compared to the Masterpiece line, or even Classics/United/Generations.

I loved them as a kid. I guess I love 'em a little less, now?

What about you guys?

Eh, I dunno. There's a bit of charm to the OGs. Generally, I'm not a fan of G1. Neither the show or the toys, but...there are a few gems.

Road Caesar? As silly as it looks, fantastic set of molds.
I'd take an Overlord reissue right now.
BBTS Piranicon? Suhweet.
And that's just a few, there are more, but they are certainly the minority. The majority are unappealing to me.

I have to admit, though, they're better built than today's stuff. By far. My goodness, today's 'bots are just so hollow...

Speaking of Road Caesar and Overlord, I will finally buy my first Kabaya sets. Oh. Yes. Please.

As for today's bots...yeah, I needs me them. They're what I've been waiting for all this time. I do have Sky-Lynx and Perceptor (G1) for my Neo-G1 line up, but they work well enough that they don't feel completely out of place.

Plus with 3rd parties and home brew 3d printer folks, I'd imagine we'll see upgrades for those old G1 bots to give them what they need to be as poseable as today's figures. Mmm...poseable Perceptor. YES. PLEASE.

Actually, and this may surprise you, I can count the number of G1 figs I have on one hand, not including some of the cassettes.

Like you said, it's all about taste. I respect what the Transformers of the 80s achieved in terms of engineering and lateral thinking in the toy design world, but I prefer the far more pose-able figures of the modern day.

Do you still have that Trypticon you bought at BotCon...oh geez, was it 2010 or 2012?

As for me, I've gone back and forth but I'm actually starting to shift back to G1. I pre-ordered Fort Max early on and have yet to get a Metroplex if that tells you anything.

Poseability isn't everything for me. I actually prefer the G1 transformations and I like the diecast of the first few years a lot. I've been spending most of my money lately on Cyberverse size figs when it comes to the new stuff. I snagged most of the Prime deluxes but they've just been taking up space lately and I've only bought a small fraction of the FoC stuff.
