Official Movie Reviews Thread (Spoilers!)

Postby Salazaar » Fri Jun 08, 2007 10:19 pm

With the release of the movie soon, I thought the boards may be flustered with threads about reviewing the film. Well, instead of several threads with the same topic, let's just have one. Please rate the movie on a 1-10 scale, and give a reason why you gave it that score, and your favorite/least favorite moments of the movie. Also if you are reviewing the film based on the BotCon cut, then please do it in Seibertron.com's official BotCon spoilers review box! Like so:

BotCon Review wrote:I loved the movie. BotCon was excellent, and I had a great time. The best part was when Prime whipped out his Energon sword and cut Lugnutz into pieces. My only major gripe with the film was that Soundwave has a huge unibrow that ejects transforming minion pandas. I give it an 8/10.

I don't expect any reviews here soon, but this is to protect the boards from being flooded with unecessary threads. Also, could a mod sticky this?

I'm sure Mulla or myself will be along in a day or so.

Oh and I don't see why we need to use the "spoiler box". The thread title clearly states there's going to be spoilers so if a person comes into the thread they do so knowing all too well that there could be spoilers.

wow 9.0 awsome movie.. Bay did it right - no real spoiler

Postby trunks6728 » Thu Jun 14, 2007 7:16 pm

The movie rocked... the human element was fine, the hunor was pretty funny. the story came together well. The bumbleebee scenes are priceless.

I can see where it might of been rated R as to it is very violent :). Peter Cullen does awsome as prime.. ALmost brought a tear when he transformed the first time.. He really makes the movie and well.. you will see...

As said before, the first blackout transformation was sweet. the transformation sound was heard well.. the only thing about that is you didn't really hear it again as loud.. it was mixed into the transformation.. Primes first transformation kicks ass.. Even megatron is bad. The voice is really good.. all the voices seemed to fit well..

The time flew by. It is a mix all the way through with tons of action at the end...

Prime is bad ass when he fights.

The only problem i had was they didn't show the decepticons enough but when they did, boy did they make up for it. all in aa A+ movie and bay did not do anyone wrong.. Very impressed.. I can't wait to catch another screening or two then watch it opening night with all my people at the theater and the fans like me... I am even going to pay :)

If anyone has any direct questions, pm me or email me and i will answer them...

Spoiler - SPoiler - Spoiler - Spoiler Spoiler

SPOILER -----------------U have been warned.. These arn't really spoilers as i don't want to get into detail as to what happens.. just general thoughts and deeper into the charectors.. if any moderator or anyone has a problem with this, let me know and i will delete the part below.

Brawl is called "Devestator" in the print i saw today. Not sure if they are going to change that but since the production is done or so i heard, that might be how it is.

They don't show starscream, barricade, or blackout enough.. They have great scenes but could of been more... You don't really hear Devestator aka brawl, bonecrusher talk really at all.. Barricade has a little dialog, blackout has a few lines and starscream shows up half way through and toward the end and he dosn't have too many lines.. the megatron-starscream confrentation is good though.. as short as it is.

Bonecrusher dosn't have any scenes other then the prime fight.

Brawl (devestator) only shows up at the end and dosn't get much chance to do anything

starscream does some awesome damage to the f22's that are chasing him and he was done pretty well

blackout was king at the beginning and at the end, all his scenes were sweet. what happenes with him in the final battle was good.

Jazz is kinda funny but dosn't really get showed much, they pretty much use him for show.

Ironhide is great.. lots of scenes through most of the movie.
Rachet is the same way, so is prime..

You really see the bond between sam and bumbleebee grow

Prime is developed well and i love hearing cullen. At the beginning, his voice is a little deeper but in the middle andend, it is right on g1 prime tone.. ANd prime is alot more aggressive toward the decepticons in this movie.

again .. megan fox is hot, they get her at every angle.. you can tell it is a bay film..

and as i said.. Michael bay did a great job... if after you see it, you think it sucks then thats fine.. but don't judge it until you see it.. and it is so worth it.

Frenzy is sweet... by far one of the best charectors in the movie.

The scene where sam is buying bumbleebee is hilarious.. watch it carfuly. Berni mac is in it for a few seconds and has some funny lines...

The bonecrusher ---Prime fight is one of the best ones for what happens during it.

They really set it up for a sequel...

The cgi was on target..

Overall.. Very impressive.. it will give spiderman and pirates a run for thier money

i got an idea..change HorriBull to Megatron. just cause nearly everyone hates the look of megatron in the movie. be kinda funny. dont freak on my suggestion or something, and dont start talking about his look again cuz it wont change.

wheeeee I can freely discuss things! So first thing's first.

THERE ARE SPOILERS CONTAINED IN THIS POST
Therefore, if you do NOT want to have anything about this movie spoiled for you, DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER!

And given the length this post might be i'm NOT going to use spoiler tags either. 'cause you know ...

THERE ARE SPOILERS CONTAINED IN THIS POST
Therefore, if you do NOT want to have anything about this movie spoiled for you, DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER!

If you haven't gotten the message by now, then it's not my problem.

Now, onto the good stuff.

THE MOVIE OVERALL
The movie was bloody fantastic. I completely lost track of how long it went because it had me enthralled that much. Fan bias speaking? Maybe. But I also felt it was a story that kept moving along at a good pace and kept you constantly entertained.

CHARACTERS
Autobots

Optimus Prime
Prime is pretty much what we've come to expect from Prime over the years. Though he is a little different. He's got a bit of a sense of humour (something i'm not sure i'm comfortable with), and while he's the leader of the Autobots, he comes across as being more of an equal to the others. It's difficult to explain, think of it as him being more "one of the boys" but at the same time maintaining his authority figure.

Otherwise though, he's your typical Optimus Prime.

Bumblebee
Now here's a big change from the BB of old. This time around Bumblebee isn't the "kid" of the group, he's not the punching bag, he's one of the Autobots best and is treated as an equal.

Yes, his voice box is damaged which forces him to communicate via his radio. He uses a number of different stations to convey his messages. Silly? Maybe a little, but it's a "first contact" type thing where one species learns to communicate with the other.

And by the end of the movie his voice box is repaired and he does speak.

Ironhide
ahhhhh good old Ironhide. A grizzly old war horse in G1, his character has undergone a bit of tweeking. Not sure about age but he's definitely a war horse. Prime's "weapons expert" with big guns that would make Dirty Harry drool. Which is no suprise that he actually quotes Dirty Harry when the Autobots first meet Sam.

He loves his guns so much he doesn't care how big or small his target is, be it Decepticon or puppy, he really does like his guns.

I could see Ironhide sitting at a bar with Dirty Harry and John Wayne telling stories and debating whose gun has the biggest bang.

Ratchet
How to describe Ratchet? There's not much of his G1 self here. He's a bit of new take. A medic that can really kick arse if he needs to. Unfortunately we don't get to see enough of his character to really understand him, but there's definitely something there I hope they explore some how.

Jazz
Oh deary me. What a tragedy. I don't know if they were trying to recreate G1 Jazz's "cool" attitude from the 80's, or going for the generic hip-hop character. The way he talks is very hip-hop-ish, but what really sets him apart from G1 Jazz is how fast he moves. You'd almost think he was Blurr as he flits around so much.

That's why his death didn't bother me. What we saw of his characterisation was nothing memorable. And as far his death goes, well blink, and you'll definitely miss it. Very un-eventful, heck even after the battle Prime pretty much "gets over it" in the space of a second.

Decepticons
Megatron
Doesn't really get enough screen time to establish his character. I felt he also didn't get enough lines to really form an opinion on Weaving's voice.

What I did get about the character though was a Megatron that wasn't held back. The best part for me was to see Megatron assault a human, with the assumption the human ended up dead because of Megatron. Yes, human deaths caused by a Decepticon. And it shows how little regard he has for humans.

Starscream
Such a non-event it's not funny. There's really not much to say about him as he just wasn't used enough.

Barricade
ohhhhhhh what a wonderfully evil Decepticon! For me the best scene of the movie was his interrogation of Sam. The voice was absoloutely perfect. Commanding, evil, powerfully intimidating. Definitely the "bad cop". But that voice! Absoloutely friggen perfect!

Blackout
Doesn't get much characterisation. But embodies everything a Decepticon should be. A giant robotic war machine with a **** load of weaponary at his disposal and more than willing to use it on anyone and anything.

Bonecrusher
Character wise there's nothing. His only big spot is getting his head hacked off by Prime.

Brawl
Again, no real characterisation. Funny how the best TF tanks get no real recognition. Must introduce Brawl to Stalker some time ...

Frenzy
Well now, Frenzy. That was ... different. I felt Frenzy was a bit of a blend from various movies.
• The look of a midget Terminator endo-skeleton
• The curiosity of Johnny-5
• The agility of Gollum
• The ability to survive near destruction like Waspinator

That's right, Waspinator. Because Frenzy doesn't stay a portable cd player for the duration of the movie. Mikaela cuts his head off, and in good ol Waspinator fashion, keeps on kicking. But rather than rebuilding his body he simply adapts and becomes Mikaela's mobile phone.

Scorponok
Well natureally there's no characterisation. He's just there to beat up humans. Still, he conveys just how tough Cybertronians are and how much it takes to bring one Decepticon down.

The humans
Sam
Sam's character is pretty basic, he's the klutzy kid at school with a crush on one of the hot chicks. But he's not a nerd as he's got a plan to get the girl, and that plan is to get a car. Get the car, get the robot, get a whole new world.

Mikaela
Token hot chick who has a juvie record and can fix cars. She also isn't scared of giant robots or being in the middle of an intergalactic war zone.

Sam's parents
Well it isn't Sparkplug! The only thing Sam's dad seems to know about cars is to know when to not get ripped off.

Still, he's a pretty funny character, loves his son, loves his lawn, possibly more than his son.

Nothing spectacular about his mother though. She's a good match for Sam's dad.

Sector 7
Oh FFS. What a bloody joke. With all the lead up hype I expected S7 to be some really covert operation, but the main S7 guy is a joke, a joke who gets peed on by Bumblebee. If they were attempting to make S7 like MiB, they failed, in fact it's more of a mockery of MiB.

The Government
Standard bunch. Issue orders, protect the country, blah blah blah. No Academy awards for that lot!

The Government ring-ins
Maggie and Co. Conveniently crack the Decepticon signal. Maggie and her own outside contractor/hacker do provide a few laughs when the government catches up with them.

THE REST OF THE MOVIE
Transformation sequences
The close-ups (like Prime) were pretty well done, a little "busy" at times though. When in battle they were pretty fast.

Battle scenes
Okay, this was probably my biggest gripe with the movie. The fight scenes are pretty intense on the eyes. There's a lot going on and the CGI doesn't do a great job. As Mulla said "it's like trying to play a PS3 on a 10 year old tv, too blurry".

It's why I never understood people getting so excited over the Prime/Bonecrusher fight scene. It's so fast and blurry to me it's hard to make anything out.

The love story
Was very VERY minor. Yeah, Sam's got a crush on Mikaela, that much is obvious. But other than the "get a car, get a girl" thing they're too busy trying to not get killed to explore their relationship.

The AllSpark
I'd pretty much avoided as many spoilers as I could. So it was a suprise to see that the AllSpark was actually a massive cube big enough to fill a sports stadium. And despite being told there's "no mass-shifting", Bumblebee actually does something to the cube to reduce it's size so that Sam can handle it.

The soundtrack
People got up in arms over nothing. The "Sam/Mikaela" love song might have gotten two seconds of play time. The only noticeable song from the soundtrack is Linkin Park's. Everything else is simply "inspired" by the movie.

The AllSpark unleashed
The first use of the AllSpark's power is in the government's secret base and a tiny fraction is used on a mobile phone to bring it to life. The little blighter instantly transforms complete with mini-guns and attempts to blast it's way out of it's little prison, then it's promptly fried by the S7 wankers.

During the final battle the true power of the AllSpark is released with a number of machines coming to life, the most prominant being a vending machine who also sports some mini-guns and begins a destructive rampage.

Why the rampage? Who knows. Some say it's because they're a new life and have yet to learn how to control their temper or receive proper programming.

The final battle
Is one hell of a battle! Yes, plenty of explosions (spare me the "typical Bay movie" comments. This is a movie about giant alien robots, of course the explosions are going to be big), plenty of destruction, plenty of carnage.

BABBLINGS ABOUT OTHER THINGS
Geez there's just so many great scenes. Seeing the Autobots all heading down the highway (to which they should have been playing "The Boys are back in Town") to Prime throwing a u-turn in the middle of a highway.

Barricade's interrogation of Sam. Just absoloutely fantastic. Love it!

There's just so much I could go on about, it's a bloody enjoyable movie. As fans you'll love it. Sure there are things I wasn't entirely happy about, but i've yet to encounter a movie i've never found fault with. I love my movies but for the last year or so i've found it harder and harder to enjoy them. But this movie I truly and thoroughly enjoyed and can't wait to see it again.

"Just Prime!" simply doesn't do it justice.

Well, I just saw the movie, and it ROCKED!!

There be mild spoilers below, but not plotpoints, just cool stuff I wanted to let you know before I go to bed, gotta work tomorrow...

anyway, mild spoilers below:

Peter Cullen as Prime: no significant effects to his voice, he sounds very much like the natural Peter Cullen Prime-voice, and he pulls everything off very nicely, the "my bad" comment as he crushes the fountain in the Witwicky garden is very well-timed. The "E-Bay" comment as well.

Prime is also the narrator for the movie, at the beginning and in the end. Lot's of Peter Cullen in there, rejoice! :)

Hugo Weaving as Megatron..... is..... BRILLIANT!
Very happy with this, he doesn't sound like "V" or Agent Smith at all. He sounds violent, threatening, and bloody evil. People were afraid Megs was hardly in the movie? Well, the real star is Frenzy (the head punt you see Spike do? He doesn't die there, oh no... it's just the beginning!), but Megatron comes in second, with a fair amount of screentime.

Brawl.... is IN the movie, oh yes. He doesn't speak, but he's in there. The Cybertronian translated stuff, yeah, there's a mess-up. They call him Devastator in the translations.

Bonecrusher is hardly in the movie at all, sadly. The highway scene, that's it. Prime has a sword, and... stuff happens :)

There are lots MORE Transformers in the movie that didn't receive the toy treatment. And Frenzy turns into Mikaela's cellphone at one point as well!!

The acting (from the humans) is alright. Megan is hot, and not a bad actress at all, IMO. The Australian chick has a nice amount of screentime, and looks great as well. Lots of eyecandy in this movie, with the amazing special effects, robots (still don't really like the designs, though...) and the beautiful girls.

The military is in this movie A LOT.

The voices for the TF's are good. Jazz doesn't sound like Scatman, his voice is a lot lower now, but he sounds as he should. A bit Will Smith-like :) And yes, he does some breakdancing as well.

The voice that really stands out to me is Ratchet. He sounded a bit like Kup, really really cool voice, the seasoned doctor and all around intelligent dude.

And I really don't know who won the "Make Prime Speak" contest, because there are 2 "Prime quotes" in there: "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings" and "One shall stand, one shall fall".

That's it for now, I'll be back tomorrow, so you can ask questions if you like and the suspense is killing you, hehe.
Everyone has got to see this movie, it's friggin' cool!

I was in room 12 of the Arena cinema, the special preview with afterparty (noticed a couple of celebrities, too). Always nice to enter a cinema on the red carpet :)

Anyway, for those who have seen it: let's briefly discuss.... sequels!!

MAJOR spoilers below, you have been warned!

Anyway, only three Decepticons survived this movie. Scorponok was injured, but he managed to escape, and we don't see him again. I suppose he's still out there, somewhere.

Barricade doesn't die. I assume he just Transformed and got away from the battlescene. Which is good, because he was just too cool :)

And Starscream is seen escaping into the stratosphere. They definitely make a point of him surviving it all.

So everything's definitely set up for a sequel. Prime even mentions there are a lot more Autobots "out there".

So, what do you guys think? Will Megatron somehow be back? He dies because of the Allspark, loses a leg.... but he could still be resurrected, right? Because I certainly don't buy that his body would be crushed due to the extreme gravity at great depths in the ocean and stuff. His Cybertronian bodyform should be well used to such extremes...

if anything, I think the pressure will force some sort of "reboot" and revive Megatron, stronger then ever due to now posessing added strength from the allspark in his frame.cause let`s face it, why bother signing some major actor up for the voice of Megatron when he says so little?there`s got to be some clause that`ll let him return for more movies I`d say. and DAMN you Hans, I got treated like crap at the Rai.

Most excellent, and thanks for the info. I was actually really excited when those Mark Ryan rumors went around, because his voice seemed like it would've worked out, but quoting Dirty Harry? Me freaking gusta. I don't suppose he says, "Personell? But, Prime, personell's for assholes."? That would seriously be the best thing ever, hahaha.

Nah, it had to do with guns. Everything Ironhide does in the movie has to do with guns :)

He actually uses them to launch himself (shooting in the ground) in the air while doing salto's....
