Optimus Primal wasn't Optimus, he was of a later generation with integrated biosynthetics and his mouth wasn't bendy metal. The characters in Beast Wars/Machines had fur too, whereas Laserbeak didn't have feathers and the original Predacons didn't have fur. People are grateful he has a mouthplate, they just want him to keep the damn thing on if it looks as terrible as some have said. Bay himself has clarified that he never said the lips in the European trailer wouldn't be in the movie, only that it wasn't Cullen's voice. As to the whole 'Unicron trilogy Optimus had a mouth' thing, G1 cartoon Grimlock was a retard used for comedic purposes after the animated film. That doesn't mean putting Grimlock in the sequel with down's syndrome would be the best idea.

Lips are part of a mouth.

EDIT: Also, apart from you and Shadowman who have both stated you 'don't really care either way', where is there a post against the faceplate? Have you even read through the thread or was it so terribly boring you decided just to post and pretend you did?

Well seeing as I was the 4th or 5th post in and the rest of the thread has been me and you bickering back and forth I think its safe to say that I have read it.

And this thread specifically mentions "lips" because everyone was whineing about his lips looking like fish lips and being on his chin.

So then why pretend the thread contains people arguing against the mouthplate?

This thread specifically mentions lips because his mouth is comprised of a pair of lips. If like Megatron his 'mouth' was a maw full of pointed teeth then replace 'lips' with 'maw full of teeth'. Either way, it's his mouth which the thread is about, hence the mention of 'mouthplate' as opposed to 'lipplate'. Have you given up on pretending you have a point?

The lips were mentioned in a review of the preview screening at AICN. The reviewer said they were distracting and looked weird. The lips were also mentioned in another review of the 20-minute-showings.

As far as this thread goes - it was supposed to be a thread where the pro-faceplate people could voice their opinion and make a plea to the moviemakers to drop the mouth. The people who are cool with the lips needn't post in here at all. Why else did you think I was constantly talking about "like-minded people"? It's merely meant to be a platform for people who are against the lips and for the permanent faceplate, a thread to show the movie people how many fans are against the lips to help them in their decision to either drop or keep the lips.

I'm all for change, and have been much more accepting of newer things than alot of other fans, but the lips on the movie Prime are just wrong.

I just can't put it any other way, it's just plain wrong.

They worked on Beast Wars, but only because it was a different character. As for Energon and Cybertron, I thought the lips looked ridiculous.

If the lips were so cool, why aren't they on all of the Movie Prime toys? How many Movie Prime figures have we seen with the lips.... I'll save you some time, we've seen none. Why? because John Q Public isn't going to recognise 'Optimus Prime' as the guy with 'lips', the faceplate is probably the most iconic thing about his design!

bottom line is, the flames are bad, but the lips are worse.

No mouth on Prime. Keep the faceplate ON.

Imagine, 20 years from now, you were given the contract to redesign Darth Vader and Boba Fett.

Would you put lips on those helmets?

Didn't think so.

If there's a chance to keep the faceplate on the entire movie, then please, keep the face plate on the entire movie.

I'm not concerned at all. Prime's much bigger than this little issue. Character > Design.

I think Prime would look way better with the faceplate up all the time. He'll look a lot more like Prime. From what I saw, the lips were more awkward than bad, and I'm sure the lips themselves would look great, but I think that for the sake of having Prime look more like Prime, the faceplate is the way to go. Either way, I know this movie is going to rock.

Hmm, as much as I love the faceplate, I wouldn't mind Prime having a mouth, so long as it don't look crappy.

So, I guess I'm neutral.

Prime's faceplate is part of him! Masked heroes are the best kind (except for real ones of course) ! Lips aside, Optimus primal had a nod to the faceplate in his nose- guard- inverted- V- thing. It was there all the time. He had a a faceplate with a hole in it. This was ok, why? it still covered his face, primal wasn't really prime, beast wars seemed slapstick at times to me and not serious, so prime could be taken less seriously.
mouth lips on prime are bad because....I have rarely seen a CG item with lips that looked believable, and only then in movies where the director knew how important it was (LOTR for example). All the star wars creatures looked weird to me when they talked. CG mouths dont work for me, and the further from human, the less they do.

Also primal wasn't optimus prime, so thats not a great argument against the plate. Rodimus Prime didn't have a faceplate either, why doesn't that argument come up?

SO let me if I understand you Optimus primal isnt prime. I get that o.k.?
