ROTF appreciation

Postby Fury Guts » Mon Jun 28, 2010 10:59 am

Even though most fans and people would say that ROTF was nothing but a piece of terrible garbage, I think we should still give it some appreciation. I think it's understandable that it turned the way it was because of the writer's strike at that time. The one thing that I'm trying to say is that even though ROTF had possibly turned out completely terrible, we should at least agree to one thing: it's still Transformers. I watched ROTF on my PS3 last Friday (just for a re-review.) after a long time and only skipping a couple of scenes, and for me, it's just as good as the 1st one, but it's not entirely better.

I wouldn't say most people hated it, it's just that the people who did are really vocal about it. All the nerdrage combined with this Bay hate fad make it seem less popular than it really was.

Very well said. :APPLAUSE:

If i remember correctly, ROTF came out on a Wednesday, so due to my schedule, i had to wait till Saturday to see it. In between then, everyone that i knew that had seen it between Wednesday and Friday loved it. I think one of the reasons it got so much controversy from fans and critics alike is the fact that Critic bagged on it so much, but yet it blew up the box office. NO it wasn't perfect, but it was a step in the right direction.

Other than a few plot holes ( a few concerning The Fallen), Megatron being a sissy, and Devastator looking like a Bionicle, I LOVED the movie...the fight scene in the forest of Optimus VS. Grindor, Starscream, Megatron is EPIC.

Another worthy ally of the Revenge of The Fallen...not hating...team. Like i've said before, and like what youve said, if you skip a few scenes it makes it alot better! Granted ROTF was my favorite movie ever to begin with, it just makes it even better!

I second this. I did like the movie, but I don't think it was close to as good as the first, however when my mom got in on DVD for Christmas, me and my brother watched it without a few scenes. It turned out so much better! In the theatre I was disappointed but after taking out the lame scenes it got that much better...

Yeah! The movie is great. I don't care about the flaws because I just want pure visual entertainment from Michael Bay. I want robots fighting robots, superb looking cars and bad ass vehicles, great visual effects and the best sound mixing ever made in a movie (it surely deserved the oscar).

I enjoyed the movie. I won't say it's the greatest anything (2 and half hour commercial perhaps hehe.)but it's no where remotely as bad as people make it out to be. When I went to see in the theaters the crowd cheered and clapped at different points.

I've yet to meet anyone in real life who said they hated, as most the hyperboles seems be on the web and no where else. I've heard people say was ok, but none of this...it's a crime against humanity these people say it is. One DJ had people call in because he wanted hear people thoughts, and everyone who got on the air liked it and said go see it.

People from a wide range of ages liked it. My one co worker in his 70s, never watched transformers outside the movies liked it. Same with my girlfriend, she only saw the films and even went see ROTF on her own without me since she was in AZ at the time. My sister and her kids all were eager to go see it as I got them all into transformers because of the movies. Even my mom liked it.

Ultimately the Forest Battle alone made the movie for me. Prime telling "you'll never stop at one, I'll take you all on" was just so epic. Between the scene in the first film when the autobots came to earth and that, are top two scenes of both films. The music really sets the tone, as it goes perfectly with whats going on.

If people want to hate the film and waste their time complaining till end of time about it...well that's their choice. While there's tweaks I'd made if i could go back and alter the films, I'm more than happy with them and grateful they were made as Transformers is more popular than it's ever been. I have enough dead things from my childhood; it's nice see new adventures, and my favorite heroes roll out one last time. I'll be there to see the third, and hopefully I'll be in it. (crosses fingers for his call back hehe.)

First off, let me say that I like this movie quite a bit.

That said, when I first saw it, I was so exicted and caught up in the moment and was in awe of the robots that I didn't think of much else; now, looking back, I feel that the first one was better than ROTF (remember: I still like ROTF!!).

There was a great deal of build-up for the first one, and I spent much of my energy trying to find out as much as I could about the movie without spoiling it too much. I didn't do that a whole lot with ROTF since a sequel was kind of expected for a franchise like Transformers, but I still got giddy whenever I saw a commercial or trailer for it.

I think Shia LaBeouf said it best (shocking, I know) when he said something about ROTF getting too big for itself, and I agree. In retrospect, it looks like they were trying to cram in as much action and as many robots as possible, so much so that the story floundered. Now, I understand that both movies aren't much about story, they're summer action flicks. But in comparison to the first movie, which had a unique "spirit" (for lack of a better word), since it was the first Transformers movie, and they did their best to make it appealing, whereas the second one was more about, "Ok, let's see how big we can make this and just grip it and rip it."

So, in short, I like ROTF. It could've been done better, but I still liked it. Here's hoping the third movie is the best!

ROTF had great FXs and action scenes, and that's exactly what I went to see it for. I enjoyed they comedy, the Twins especially. Hell, I thought Devastator's balls were a clever gag about kibble!
And we got a lot of neat toys to boot.

I why they got rid of that subplot of Megatron wanting to be a Prime? That would've added so much depth to the characters.

As I said when starting this topic, I love both the first and second live action movies. For me, I don't like one of them over the other, so they are both very equal. And plus for me, ROTF had the best battles, like the mission in Shanghai, the forest battle, and you can't forget about Optimus facing off the Fallen with the Jetfire armor. Plus, I'm sure that those who didn't like ROTF would still go and see the upcoming 3rd and final one anyway. :BOT: With hard work and appreciation, all are one.

Some good points here, i didnt like the film, but the forest scene, for me, was great and basically the start of the movie. I think we're doing the medium of film a tremendous dis-service by saying things like 'the films brilliant if you skip this scene and that scene'. I dont wanna tread old ground here but if you have to do that to maintain your sanity when watching it then that film is a failure. I dont really care for the critics, i love b-movies, their love for film and the genre shines through. I dont get that with Bays 2nd film, fingers crossed for the third.

Yeah, namecalling anyone who disagrees with you and then grammar failing (dude, it's 'straight' not 'strait')...NOT really convincing that you've got any ethos.

I'll be frank: I hate ROTF. I was hoping this thread would make me see it in a new light, and I'd look at it in a new light. Instead even one of the staunchest supporters says he has to skip scenes while watching it?!?!?

I won't rehash my objections to the film because that's been done to death and this is an appreciation thread.

Here's what I did like: Simmons was hilarious. I liked the transformation scenes, particularly the forming of Devastator. I did like the forest fight. The airdrop of Optimus at the beginning was well done, and the Shanghai chase was beautifully filmed.

Uhhh, yeah. That covers about 10 minutes of screen time. That's not enough to redeem the rest of it for me, sorry.

Plus another thing that we give ROTF credit for is that it had given fans what they wanted: more Transformers. And for me, I think the movie Optimus Prime is the bad### incarnation of Prime.

Well, I liked ROTF. The forest fight being the most enjoyable part of the film. There were a few parts that didn't sit right with me.

The Fallen getting owned in like a minute was like wtf???? He was supposed to be a badass. All the other primes sacrificed themselves in order to stop him yet Prime vanquished him in a few minutes....lol

I enjoyed the many new robots.....lets hope that in TF3 they get more screen time. Can we actually see more human soldiers die at the hand of the Decepticons?

ROTF imo was waaaaaay better than the first movie....but despite the few plot holes and things that made me say #-o I will be there God spare life to watch the 3rd installment.

No secret- I liked the 2nd movie. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. It was never a movie that I expected Grammy Award Winning performances from, so I wasn't terribly disappointed. If I were naive enough to think otherwise, then I would certainly have been disappointed.

I love ROTF. I don't have to skip scenes to enjoy it, and I find it to be a much better movie.

Now, I must say that it does go on a bit too long, but that's not the content, it's the fact that 2.5 hours is a LONG movie, no matter what it's about.

I loved Titanic, I thought it was an excellent movie, but 3hrs, 15min is a long, long time to watch a movie.

The first movie won me over initially due to the wow factor and seeing the TFs in live action for the first time. (You know what I'm talking about. You remember those chills when Optimus came apart at the seams and stood tall and proud while you jaw lay on the floor)

But subsequent viewings made me realize the following:
1.) There's no real story.
2.) What is there, is convoluted.
3.) You don't really need to see that much of Sam.
4.) The robots needed far more screen time. Far more.
5.) It's just friggin' boring for at least an hour's time.
6.) Prime was portrayed as a pansy, somewhat.
7.) Glen and Maggie, while both excellent performances, were unneeded filler.

When I saw ROTF for the first time, I was wowed, but not for the same reasons as the first. I was desensitized to the whole "Ooh, look, they're real!" aspect because we've all seen it now.

On the first viewing, and repeats helped solidify this, I noticed:
1.) It actually has a story and plot. Thin, yes. Still there was more to it than the first movie.
2.) It wasn't convoluted or confusing.
3.) There were more humans this time around, but we also had a lot more robot screen time. (We got what we wanted. But people focus on the human aspect too much.)
4.) It was fast paced enough to not become boring, it had enough smooth flow to be enjoyable.
5.) Prime was shown to be a capable fighter. (More than, actually. Though, I must admit...they went a tad overboard when he went psycho killer in the forest and the Egypt showdown.)
6.) No stupid subplots like the hacker/analyst of the first movie. It was just N.E.S.T. and Sam. I found that far more enjoyable.

Was the movie perfect? Of course not. Nothing is. Was it a lot of fun? YES. And it was closer to G1 than the previous installment was.

G1:
Loud.
Colorful.
Puddle thin.
Goofy.
An advertisement.
Optimus dies and returns to save them all.

ROTF:
Loud.
Colorful.
Puddle thin.
Goofy.
An advertisement.
Optimus dies and returns to save them all.

And the Sun Harvester? Silly, over the top, Bond villain type of crazy. Much like G1.

The first movie? A cube and a pair of glasses. That's right. Their mission was to find a pair of glasses that would lead them to a cube. Yeah. Whoopity friggin' doo.

ROTF?

Told the story of the ever strengthening bond between the Autobots and the humans, showed how much they need Sam and likewise, he needs them. Showed that they were willing to sacrifice for each other. Showed how evil The Fallen really was, and how the Decepticons were formed.

Much more to the story than the first film. They can't even compare. Can't.

Now, one thing that the critics were right about...the special effects, including the robots themselves. The first movie, they looked breathtaking. In ROTF, they didn't quite stand out as much as they did in the first film. They looked great, don't get me wrong, but they did seem to stand out more in the first film. And that's not the wow factor, that's the level of quality put into the CGI.

Bumblebee's connection to Sam was more heartfelt in the second film, compared to the first. I realize they were from different worlds and still getting used to each other, but much like G1, ROTF delivered on them being pals. Which is how it was always meant to be. The only crit I have is that Sam still treats him like an object from time to time. "Go with Bumblebee, get in the car." Bumblebee isn't really a car. It's his disguise, yes. It's functional, yes. But he's a living being, not an object. That's the one thing I'd like to see them change for the 3rd movie. I'd like to see them have Sam get it through his thick head and treat Bumblebee as a person, not his first car.

His friend.

If they correct that, the 3rd movie will already be an improvement. If they continue with the trend of the second film's high notes, and avoid all of it's low notes, plus avoid what made TF1 so bad, then 3 really could be the one sequel to help break the tradition of a sequel sucking. It's rare that part 2 ever outperforms the original, and it's next to unheard of to have the 3rd come even close. TransFormers might be the franchise that can actually pull it off. It already did when ROTF took the first movie and curb stomped it.

Oh, and the first movie? It took the TV edit (which cut down a lot of wasted time, the foul language, and was overall streamlined) to make it enjoyable. How sad is that?
