So, I picked him up at WalMart yesterday for $35. Is it just me or is it just a big pain in the rear to get all of those tabs lined up, much less keep them there during the transformation?
One thing I really like though is the fact that he is matte black in color.

Yup they are. I had the same issuse as you when I first got him, keep transforming him and you'll get used to him. Though I leave him in his bot mode now and will only transform him once my buster prime arrives to combine the both of them.

It's not just you, aligning all the tabs is the most "difficult" part of the transformation.
It's a good figure. I personally really like it, despite issues like the underside robot kibble in alt mode.

I wanted to keep him in his alt mode for the awe factor, but decided to keep him in combination mode with Prime for space factor. Yes, his panels are hard to line up.

Definitely agree about the panels. The transformation is nothing that complex, but getting everything flush and snapped in can be a hassle, especially at first. I spent forever on the last panel, the one that becomes Prime's gun.
But it's worth it! Jet mode is huge and awesome. Yes, it has all the parts visible underneath, but it isn't really too bad. And after combining him with prime into Power Up mode, I'm very glad I got the figure.
