The villains were entertaining, the overall story was engaging and I liked how they handled the themes of tolerance and inclusion. However I thought the end result was a little too much too fast too in your face too perfectly happy ending after everything we had learned about Zyuland leading up to the finale. I'll take the happy ending but I would have preferred something a little more realistic. Perhaps something that would have finally be resolved in a post-series movie? Maybe I'm nitpicking as this is a super sentai series. It was a good, fun show. But I can't ignore how close they were to something even greater.
I agree with this assessment overall. What with Bard and Larri's revelations that Zyuland
was pretty intolerant towards humans and human sympathizers, there seemed to be relatively little in the way of prejudice when
the two worlds merged instead of completely separating. I can attribute this to them wanting a happy ending and for time, but maybe there's room for a little fiction on the side examining the nitty gritty of it. I was also a little disappointed that
Kubar was dispatched so quickly after we discovered his true identity, which they'd been building to for quite a while. And Yamato's final form was kind of a mess.
On the whole though, it was a good show with good messages and a stronger sense of self-identity than Gokaiger five years prior, and I dare say a better overall plot than Boukenger from 10 years back. I haven't seen Gaoranger or Carranger to compare, and while Jetman is technically the 15th anniversary season in retrospect, it wasn't considered such at the time.
Over the year I kept hearing the word "ohger" when the sentai members introduced themselves. Reading the dub am I correct that the word means "champion"? If so what does "zyu" mean?
Their roll calls are "[something something] no ōjā", written in kanji as 王者. The show's title Zyuohger/Jūōjā is written ジュウオウジャー in hiragana. The "ōjā" part is specifically オウジャー. "Zyu" (ジュウ) in
Zyuranger,
Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger,
Zyuken Sentai Gekiranger, and
Zyuohger means beast. Japanese phonetics are a little different from English ones so you sometimes also see it written as "Ju", "Jū", or "Jyu". The sound is the same regardless of how you attempt to transcribe it. Anyway yeah that part means "beast". In the series title, "ohja" is derived from "oh" meaning king and "ranger" (renja) レンジャー. Shortening "ranger" to just "ger" (or ja) ジャー is a naming pattern that started in Boukenger and was followed in Go-Onger, Shinkenger, Goseiger, Gokaiger, Kyoryuger, Ninninger, and ToQGer, and thus by similar naming conventions we can infer that's how they intend the show to be named. The "ohja" part in their roll call is not an acclimation of ranger status specifically, and can therefore be interpreted as "champion", "monarch", "ruler" or other related terms. 王者 is specifically made of the kanji for "king" and "person". Phonetically, "ohger" in "Zyuohger" and "ohja" in the roll call are the same, but taken to mean different things in their different places based on tradition and wordplay. So Zyuohger means Beast King [Ran]ger, with Beast Champion as a punny double meaning.
Now who wants some more Kyuranger news? The show starts next week, and it's going to have a record nine rangers in the core cast, but we have information about the second quarter of the show already pointing to.......
our 10th and 11th rangers and their mecha.I'm too lazy to upload the pics so
here's a link. Scroll through their forum discussion for some more tidbits.
There's also some new stuff about Ex-Aid I could share.
