Re-opened so we can discuss the announcement of the new series from CBS

CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new Star Trek television series in January 2017. The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.

The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.

The new program will be the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for CBS All Access, a cross-platform streaming service that brings viewers thousands of episodes from CBS’s current and past seasons on demand, plus the ability to stream their local CBS Television station live for $5.99 per month. CBS All Access already offers every episode of all previous Star Trek television series.

The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

Alex Kurtzman will serve as executive producer for the new Star Trek TV series. Kurtzman co-wrote and produced the blockbuster films Star Trek (2009) with Roberto Orci, and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) with Orci and Damon Lindelof. Both films were produced and directed by J.J. Abrams.

The new series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout. Kurtzman and Heather Kadin will serve as executive producers. Kurtzman is also an executive producer for the hit CBS television series Scorpion and Limitless, along with Kadin and Orci, and for Hawaii Five-0 with Orci.

Star Trek, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016, is one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time. The original Star Trek spawned a dozen feature films and five successful television series. Almost half a century later, the Star Trek television series are licensed on a variety of different platforms in more than 190 countries, and the franchise still generates more than a billion social media impressions every month.

Born from the mind of Gene Roddenberry, the original Star Trek series debuted on Sept. 8, 1966 and aired for three seasons – a short run that belied the influence it would have for generations. The series also broke new ground in storytelling and cultural mores, providing a progressive look at topics including race relations, global politics and the environment.

“There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”

“Every day, an episode of the Star Trek franchise is seen in almost every country in the world,” said Armando Nuñez, President and CEO, CBS Global Distribution Group. “We can’t wait to introduce Star Trek's next voyage on television to its vast global fan base.”

CBS All Access offers its customers more than 7,500 episodes from the current television season, previous seasons and classic shows on demand nationwide, as well as the ability to stream local CBS stations live in more than 110 markets. Subscribers can use the service online and across devices via CBS.com, the CBS App for iOS, Android and Windows 10, as well as on connected devices such as Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, Roku players and Roku TV, with more connected devices to come.

The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.

I wonder where this would fit? After Voyager? Before TNG? After Enterprise?

Other than saying the new show isn't connected to Star Trek Beyond there has been little comment from anyone in the know about what era of Universe the new show will be set in.

I think there would be not a huge joy to have a remake of the TOS as that would just mean another cast to deal with - I suppose you can set a show with another crew in that era but they'd pretty much have to make one up.

Unless it's a Pike prequel show - but if that happened then everyone would be super peeved at how poorly pike went out in Into Darkness if we found out even more about him.

Considering the licensing arguments between Paramount (Movie division) and that part of CBS Television (that was formally part of Paramount Television) I would suggest that a TV era would be more likely as JJ got no where trying to get a TV show set in that era made to date.

So we have a few options.

Post Voyager - which would be early 25th Century now.

That could be a number of things a anthology type show, something that isn't Starship based or even a variation on the worf show ideas.

I wouldn't mind an Enterprise F show - but I think it seem like a rehash.

I suppose they wouldn't want to make a whole series about 29th or 26th century Time Travellers or 25th Century types dealing with all that - as fun as I'd find that myself.

I don't think people really had a lot of love for the temporal cold war though even though I personally rather enjoyed it.

I'd like to see the races we don't get so much of and I would REALLY like the Romulans to be the 'pet race' of the Federation this time - especially if they set a show after the Romulan home planet blows up (but in a continuation of the prime timeline). I think it would be interesting to get to know them as well as we know the Klingons and perhaps to get to know the Vulcans more at the same time - via a Worf like character who happens to be a Romulan... there is some terrific non-canon novels that can give you plenty of tips in that direction the ones with George Kirk in being particularly terrific.

We could do with some more of the Gorn too.... especially if it's feasible to do something with them like that very impressive looking Giant Trandoshan than is in Force Awakens.

(Oh I don't much like how the Gorn Captain now blinks either in the HD Star Trek - but I guess I can deal with it).

The Post DS9 Novels also had some interesting ideas about the Breen too.

There is lots to build on but I don't want another spacial anomaly of the week show - I want some world building.

I expect it to not be connected to any of the old TV-verse or the new movie-verse. I also expect it to fail miserably as it's going to be a CBS Streaming exclusive.

If they were smart (which I don't expect them to be) they'd tie it to the new movie-verse.

I'd like to see a series that has a race other than humans as the main characters. Humans can be around, maybe a supporters or peripheral characters, even a few well-knowns can drop in, but it would be cool to see how the Klingons live day-to-day, or how the Romulans were before everything went bad. Or would it be too much to expect fans to be interested in characters who were mainly villains? It would be like TF show with mainly only Decepticons in it.

Although I'm a huge fan of the Romulans I think their story was told in the Dominion War, both in the DS9 series and the extended universe novels.

I'm also really hopeful that they set the new series in the 'Prime' universe - I think that a series that dealt with how the various powers coped after the Dominion War would be really interesting.

As a History teacher and nerd I find post-war society and politics just as fascinating as war time. There are huge implications of coming out of a major war - both socially and economically. The introduction of a new power to challenge that of the mostly spent 'old' powers like the Federation, Romulans and the Klingons trying to rebuild their worlds and fleets would be very interesting indeed.

And what's this about a new Star Trek series? I agree with Burn that having it exclusive to the CBS streaming service might hinder the series at launch. Who knows, maybe in two years CBS streaming will be the new Netflix.

I'm still too worked up right now over the locking/unlocking to think clearly about Star Trek right now.

on to my trek issue.

last Saturday nite, Halloween, after the candy give aways,I sat down and started watching ME-TV's super sci/fi Saturday night programming block. The blocks line up consist of 2 Adventures of Superman episodes, 2 Adam west Batman episodes,1 Wonderwomnan and then 1 classic remastered star trek.

the ST TOS Remastered episode of the night was "Mudd's women"...........I was half paying attention when I heard something I couldnt believe.

in the scene where Sulo and the other helmsmen [Johnny] are returning to the bridge, when they are talking about the girls I heard the following..........

Well, I checked Amazon Prime streaming. It's not the remaster, just the premaster, and the line is there too. It sounds like Sulu says, “...I'm gay.” He also seems to be acting quite flamboyant in that particular scene on the bridge.

1: When Aladdin tells the princess to take off her clothes after being jumped by the tiger and says, “Down kitty, nice kitty (whispers) take off your clothes.” The line is supposed to be, now take off and go. I saw it in the theater and that's what I heard. I wasn't the only one.

I'm quite sure it's not remastered. I've seen remastered on ME-TV and it looks gorgeous. What they've got on Prime streaming is the original model full of film noise. Trust me, I wish it was the remastered. I intend to buy the whole series HD remix style but I'm waiting for a sale because those discs are not cheap and I have Transformers to collect!

The remaster is probably availabe for purchase digitially via Amazon but what they have available on Prime streaming is the untouched original.

I'm guessing if you buy the HD it'll be remastered and the SD is just the original. I'm not buying both to find out because I already accidentally bought the SD. On their streaming service it's the SD that is streamed.

Concerning this new CBS series. I really like what RAR had to say. Like, pretty much all of it. I think RAR might be a Star Trek fan. Speaking of fans, has anybody heard of this guy who's been working on a script for a new series over the past twenty years and had a chance to pitch to Paramount? (Technically he should be pitching to CBS for a series but maybe Paramount talked to CBS? Isn't it all Viacom at the top? ...licensing.)

I like the comradery the original crew had. The original series explored some far out ideas. They discovered that they can go back in time to any era in history. They explored parallel universes in depth. They encountered planets where the beings were advanced androids with feelings and emotions (eg. episode "What Little Girls are Made of") created by a civilization long gone. The show explored the dark side of humanity (eg "Where no man has gone before" and the episode where Kirk gets split in two). And how about when Kirk's consciousness was transferred into a woman or when they discovered the time travel library on the planet in a solar system whose sun was about to go supernova. They actually added the special effects for the supernova at the end with the Enterprise escaping. The ideas in the original series were used in future iterations.

Just because Star Trek 2017 is "First Run"on a Streaming Service doesn't mean the show won't show up on normal TV to in America.

Naturally the show is going to air in many place quite quickly so will air on satellite and Cable in other countries and may be able to be watched there. as well as catch up TV from though countries if you have the appropriate work around in place to prevent country location blocking effecting you. not to mention there are plenty of places where people upload shows too (legal or not) soon as they air.

I suspect Star Trek 2017 will be on normal TV in some way though in The USA - I'd say keep an eye on what they do with Supergirl that is likely the model they will follow in some respect of how it gets aired.

I'm sure plenty of people got into the habit of watching certain shows online already anyway not-only as someone takes any adverts out for you but also some of them air elsewhere first like Continuum for example.

I can't see a great many people wanting to pay for a Subscription service that compares so poorly to the other ones in terms of options and price. if there is only one or two shows you want you either wait for the home release or for Netflix to get it or put your morals to one side and watch it in other ways.

Speaking from a UK perspective I recall that a few people I know used to watch the X-files (back in the day) on Norweigan Satallite TV feed as it was only a week or so behind America where as the BBC had a delay on it so they could not have rerun gaps like there was in the original American run. So that sort of thing may be possible too (assuming everything isn't encrypted these days).
