Pfft. I've always found it easy to make up decent names that don't already exist in the game. I've only ever had 2 none canon characters (to my knowledge) who had already existed on the game. 1 was a name I felt was too good for the original owner to retire (Jeep!'s Bitchkrieg) and the other was a name I had come up with for a friend (Epidemicus). All my other characters were 100% original, and I was pretty happy with most of them (especially the likes of Dead Weight, Dreadspawn, Redfire One and Herikoputa).

Actually, The main reason I made that comment (sarcastically) was that I feel there is no need for people to use canon (or loose attempts as using already in use canon) names.

Regardless of the number of players and active characters, the size of the english language and others using the same alphabet is vast enough that people should be able to come up with a unique names without raping another canon character name and adding Prime at the end of it.

When I came up for the names of my team literally I sat down and figured out all 12. 11 were completely new, and one was already taken (hence Sledgehammer became Smackhammer)

My current team is a bit of an oddity for me, as I came up with a theme of sorts, then fed vaguely relevant names into a Latin translator and saw what I got (and only bothered to do half of them... the other 6 will eventually be named too). In the past I have always slowly acquired characters as they came to me (normally during MSN convos with various RDD members or on my way to and from work from some reason).
One of the reasons Im for any new version of this game having extra characters as unlockable content, is that I do find it very difficult to come up with decent names for 12 characters in a short period of time.

I was guilty of using canons for a while (especially Divebomb. Man, I had him for, like, two years!), but I ended up dropping them all, even some of my favourite characters that I somehow managed to snap up. It wasn't a big deal; I just wanted to create some original 'Cons of my own.

There are so many something-Primes here, it's not even funny... Oh, and don't forget about the Convoys. They're somewhat popular, too.

at least convoy is a *little* bit more original... The easiest way of making up original names is to go the same way Hasbro did when they came up with Optimus Prime. Take some vaguely descriptive words, make them Latin.

Heh... I went a completely different route for naming my team... Most of them bear names of human characters I've created over the years. The ones who don't, have codenames for them. A couple of the codenames are placeholders until I can come up with better ones. Some of the codenames are inspired by videogames (Knuckles and Buster Wolf) or comics (Wildstorm, Firestar), or anime (Exia). But I'm pretty horrible at naming things, so they'll probably keep those names for a while.

i changed my team to all canon names, mainly just to see if they were available. and to see if i could get all the members of a combiner team. it "kinda" worked oddly, in my head i still call them their old names. wrought gut and Colonel mustard will always have a place in my mind

one day I'll change a few back, and rename my team again.

The one advantage to having so many (at least on the 'bot side) is it makes for an easy hunt competition for 'cons.

But if it's easy, it's not a challenge.

I used only one canon name in my team and that is Leo Prime. I wanted to use the Liger alt mode and just tried using the name Leo Prime and to my surprise is was available. My other names for my team steams from old role playing names that either I used or friends used from back in the day. Not sure weather or not I will keep Leo Prime or not in the long run. I guess it will stay until I can come up with a suitable name for my Liger alt mode that makes me happy.

I do still have a couple of Bots I have started that have not received a name yet. I started them so there would not be a big gap between my characters as far as xp went. When I find a cool alt for them a name will shortly follow. I do have one, Leadweight, that I am still waiting for his alt mode to pop up tho.

I have seen a few canon names in use in the game since I started playing. I don't blame the people really. Not everybody takes the time to come up with alt names for their Bots or Cons. Heck not everybody has the imagination to do so either.

It's always been a big disappointment to me that people use canon names. Simply because I love the creativity! Nearly 7 years of this game and there's been so many characters stand out over the years. Canon characters? They don't tend to stand out too much.

But to each their own. There's always the mottos to laugh at, some of them are just downright hilarious!

As do I. And I really do appreciate those who take the time to write a good bio. I love to read them! It's refreshing to find a new player who has written something for their characters, or an existing player who's revamped their team with new writing. It inspires me to get cracking on my 'Cons' bios!

Hopefully one day, I'll have something to show off. It's just the fickle ol' mind don't wanna settle on a single idea just yet.

Heh, I'm kinda the other way around. When I play RPGs (on the pc I'm afraid) I always use one of two names, a modification on my former namesake character (Redimus Alpha) and if I feel like having a female character I go for one of my favourite female HMW creations (Elita Nemesis).

Ive ranted about this in past, but its not the canon names themselves that wind me up. its where there are zero's and dashes and special characters and crap like that added to copy the original name even though its already out there that makes me lose the will to live.

As for me, Nemesis Wheelie is the only character I've got that is even close to a 'canon'. I think it works though, he's always fun to kill.

I can agree with that. Don't know why tho, Leo Prime just stuck when I tried it out. I will more then likely change it in the future but for right now it will stay since I am still trying to come up with names and alts for others on my team.

I also agree with the dashes and whatnot. I think that is a way of cheating on the names, if you know what I mean. I do understand the desire to play as your favorite TF tho, hence the Leo Prime. I just love that alt/toy.

What I don't understand is why people don't develop their canon characters the way they would their none canon characters. Surly if they are slumming it in your team, they are getting up to something which means they are experiencing something which means their bio should be added to. (I'll admit, whilst I *did* do this, it tended to be a little bit tacked on to the end of the official bio explaining why/how they had ended up in my team.)

I thought about doing that with Leo Prime, but seeing as his bio featured him as the Pack Leader and dealt with the Maximals I thought I would change his bio to fit my group. Also seeing the only info on Leo was on his package and that he didn't appear in any comic or whatnot I didn't see the harm really. More and more tho, I see that I may end up changing his name sooner rather then later but for me it would have to be a name I am 100% happy with.

Leo Prime is kinda a new name, it's probably why you got it. I dunno if Leo Convoy is available, probably isn't.

I wouldn't mind the canon names so much, if people gave them new bios. How many times has Hasbro reused a name on a different character with a different personality? If people took that kind of approach to it, it'd be more acceptable, to me at least, but often times it's autobot names on a decepticon, or decepticon names on an autobot team, with the copied canon bio (if there is a bio) and no explanation. That's where it seems to me that if you liked those characters so much, why are you on the other side?

One of the few HMW2 things in development that I liked was that we were going to have a moratorium on canon names.

What it comes down to (atleast IMO) is that HMW is a continuity unto itself, and by developing your characters by creating original names/mottos/bios helps build the background of the game. The in-game story of HMW is also unique built on rivalrys between certain teams and events like the great resets and the brutality of being caught in an attack of Unknowns.

There is a lot of potential within the game and iconic characters on their own rights which seems diluted when you see battle reports containing the likes of "J@zz", "Crakerthunder", or "Sunstreaker Prime" let alone the "(***Optimus Prime***)" {FYI, I just made those up, no direct insult was intended if someone actually has used those names}

I honestly hope that once people regain access to the backend of the game so we can start making the little changes, that with new missions, tourneys, and hopefully get the HMW Wiki back up and running we can move forward.
