Everybody loves Hypnot... I mean Powermaster Prime :D

I bought an original when I was a kid a the flea market, and it was really the perfect Prime then. When I got back to collecting, one of the first figures I got was a boxed PM Prime.

(I didn't know the reissue got a remolded hand, was it only by the apex armor, or the japanese release was also remolded?)

This was actually the first Japanese Transformer I owned, back in 2003 or so. That is, the God Ginrai + God Bomber reissue set. It's pretty awesome. I got it from HLJ for like $25 + $10 shipping on clearance. It took almost a month or so to arrive, but it didn't disappoint.

The US got the Japanese version of the Prime trailer for the reissue. The reason being is that the fists have to withdraw in order to put the extended arms on for Apex mode.

The reissue also has diecast and chrome applications where the original US verion did not. Extra long missile aside, it is vastly superior.

I paid $50+ for mine back in 2007 from an online Gundam kits vendor. Love the combined mode, base mode, and all the weapons.

The 80s PM Prime release from Hasbro had blue stickers over solid plasic for the windows, to the best of my knowledge (although not 100% about Fire Guts or Nucleon Quest versions) all other releases have had the clear plastic windows.

Fantastic toy. I've got 3 of them in various states of repair, one being the Hasbro release that I had as a kid. The nicest by far is my TRU reissue. I may well pick up the Takara version at some stage to display the various modes seperately and have Godbomber as his own entity on the shelf, plus to swap out the longer missile from the TRU release with the proper sized one (I'm asuming that the Takara release also comes with a set of 3).

On the one hand, a very witty review of the best version of an excellent figure.

On the other hand, I'm still worried that this list is turning into "Primes I have known and loved."

That Prime is incredible. I don't have one of those. Now I am going to have to go out and find one. I had seen pictures of it before, but I didn't realize how much cool stuff was included with this guy.

Ahhh, God Ginrai... I had a PM Prime as a kid, no idea what happened to it over the years, but through swap meets and flea markets and all that in town here, I'm attempting to rebuild an original one. So far I've got a damaged cab robot, picking up leads on a trailer. I imagine the engine, super head, and guns are gonna be a pain to find... but to relive my nostalgic memories of the original, as well as give myself a little extra to love, I picked up the God Ginrai reissue a year or two ago for around $112 CDN (shipping included). I absolutely adore this figure, a brick he may be, but he's a brick you would not want to mess with. He proudly stands among my top-shelfers (located, as one might guess, at the top of my collection) with my planetformers, masterpieces... and Big Convoy for some reason...

JelZe GoldRabbit wrote:Nice choice, God Ginrai is my favourite TF of all time as I had very good memory playing with a friend's. Just a few things concerning the names:

1.) Originally, Prime's engine was named "Hi-Q". The reissue renamed him "Ginrai", probabaly for trademark reasons
2.) Who you called "Roller" is actually named "Apex Bomber". Roller is never mentioned in the reissue's Tech Specs per se, as "armored roller drone".

Someone didn't read the Post-production notes.

...also, he was referred to as 'Roller Drone' on the reissue on-package bio :)

I am loving this list more and more. excellent installment CP. I had PM Prime as a kid and he was always a fun one to mess around with. I actually still have my complete one from my childhood, alas he has floppy cab legs and a broken super head peg, but I also grabbed the God Ginrai reissue and he of course, like samsonator, sits atop my collection with the planetformers and various other favorites. I just have one more thing to add. I really hope that gobots get some love on here, I consider them part of the transformers continuity because Cy-Kill and various others have been shown in the comics and whatnot. Super Cy-Kill FTW!!

When I was a kid I thought Powermaster Prime looked SSOOOOO cool. I don't have quite the same opinion of him now though! However, I didn't know about the base mode which is very cool. Certainly a great toy for the era.

PM OP is a good pick. I had it when I was a kid. I still have OP and the trailer somewhere in my mom's house, probably packed away in the basement.

Sure it's bricky and clunky and not the most sexy design in the world but that's through my eyes today, evaluating it against all the Transformers figures created up to this point in 2009. If I consider the fact that the design and concept of OP combining with its trailer to form a super mode originated just over 20 years ago, I think it's pretty darn impressive.

I too count myself lucky to own a God Ginrai, albeit a re-issue. Freaking. Awesome. Prob the best G1 fig IMO, makes me wonder why he's so low on the list. Time will tell...

His Seibertron gallery is so very well done, part of why I bought him.

I still have my Powermaster Prime that I got for Christmas as a kid, althought the original Hi-Q got replaced with a way-less-loose one a few years ago. Great toy. Nice pick too! I almost bought the TRU re-issue one, but ended up passing and by the time I had a chance to get it they were gone. I'll stick with my original, if only for the memories!

#19 Counterpunch! (Never heard of him...)

Substitute teacher here again and in spite of your regularly scheduled programming, I’m going to take some time to talk about the robot with the plan, the blue bomber, that nefarious agent of infiltration, you know him, I love him, (no, it’s not Mega Man) we’re talking about Counterpunch.

Image
A shining beacon of hope in an otherwise dry landscape of traitors and liars!

Counterpunch is, for lack of proper means to describe him, the coolest. He’s a car and not just any car, but a blue car. I challenge anyone out there to find a more interesting or more unique combination of car and color. His alt mode is that of the beloved Pontiac Fiero. Never hear of it? I’m not surprised, he IS a spy after all.

Image
I wanna take you for a riiide.

People have attempted to deny the existence of this solitary predetor, knowing full well that if they were ever to have seen him, they would not live to tell the tale. The Pontiac Fiero is very real though. The picture below shows off how well it blends in to any surrounding for maximum spy-power. The moral of the story? Don’t look behind you, because he’s probably real nearby:

Image

Some interesting things to note about our super-spy friend here include his somewhat spindly arms. You see, Counterpunch doesn’t have time for lifting weights, he is far too busy documenting your downfall (and getting gang tattoos on his powerful chest).

Image
Go to milk, Drink your drugs, Don’t do school.

Counterpunch also comes with stylish accessories, such as this beautiful and shiny photon cannon. I have a photon cannon of my own, for my own personal use. I call it a flash light. The point is, Counterpunch is unbeatable at Laser Tag.

Image
Laser Tag is the loneliest game in the world. Seriously, was there ever a neighborhood where more than one kid had a set?

Counterpunch is also very popular, he keeps a list of his friends and that list separates into two distinct groups. The first group consists of people who are allowed to point guns at Counterpunch…

Image

and the second group consists of people who it is fun to point guns at.

Image
Rodimus SUCKS at Laser Tag.

Now, I have to address some ugly rumors out there that Counterpunch is more than just a sex-machine on four wheels with a really expensive flash light. You see, there are some who think that the man/myth/machine may in fact be leading a double life. Those people are dead wrong.

Image
Hugs can’t stop the bleeding of our betrayed hearts bub…

Anyone who would even entertain the idea that a super-spy might have complex motives (and transformations!) which would lead to being some kind of awesome double-agent is just insane.

Image
Rumor has it that Galvatron is insane…

The very idea that engineering could lead to something as fun and clever as a self-contained double-spy is absurd. No Decepticon worth his Energon could possibly fall for a trap like that.
