We kept it simple tonight. NY Strip cooked in a iron skillet topped with truffle butter. Accompanied by oven roasted beets with blue cheese and brussel sprouts with garlic herb butter and a splash of lemon juice.

Elvis - he's over played, his music isn't anything that special and was just built on other peoples work. I will say he has a lovely singing voice though.Rodimus Prime wrote:Which musical act (band or solo performer) do you think is the most overrated and why?

I think Elvis, like The Beatles, you had to be there for it when their music was fresh. While I don't mind listening to Elvis and some of The Beatles stuff, I still have to wonder what made them so popular, but then I put it down to the fact that I wasn't there at the time and was brought up listening to different stuff.

That can weigh a lot on the appreciation of older music. (I will argue that some music is timeless) Elvis just isn't my jam. I agree on the Beatles as well, but I will say sometimes I hear some of their deep cuts and I think it's a contemporary artist. I also hear a lot of the Beatles influences in the music I like.Burn wrote:I think Elvis, like The Beatles, you had to be there for it when their music was fresh. So would it be best to keep it to artist within our own lifetimes? I don't listen to "mainstream" music at all, so that puts me at a huge disadvantage here. I don't even know what is popular with the "kids" these days. I'll just toss out Imagine Dragons because they are just spicy Nickleback and Nickleback is probably one of the worst bands of the last 20 years. Correction - Creed. You can tell when the last time I listened to radio was
I've been rocking SiriusXM/internet radio so long I can barely palate broadcast radio

Fun story - I guess it was back in the early 2000's it felt like a musical drought. In hind sight I just didn't have access to better ways to experience new music (just radio and MTV was long dead and we hadn't found music on the internet yet). Our college station was the best thing on the air. We were at the in-laws and Muse Knights of Cydonia came on. Neither me nor my wife had heard of Muse yet and we were both just paralyzed, slack jawed, staring at the TV. It gave us hope there was new bands out there that weren't Nu Metal.
Ah the naivety of youth
Follow up question (and I think this has come up here); best, worst most recent concert?

Also, I agree on the Beatles, as far as I'm concerned they're a boy band, not a rock band. The reason they got so popular was because of all the girls screaming for them back in the 60s, much like New Kids in the 80s and Backstreet Boys and NSync in the late 90s/2000s. Same thing. The only difference was that it was a new type of music, which is why it left a great impression. The Rolling Stones started at the same time, and they're a much better group, IMO. Maybe if the Beatles had stayed together it would be different. I will say that I do like Paul McCartney's music.

Best: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - their last tour - thought they were going phone it in, but they didn't - in fact it was the exact opposite
Worst: Tame Impala - I'm a big fan of them, and they played perfectly fine, almost too perfect - it was like listening to their CD - same track order and everything - I was also having a weird night
Most Recent: Lord Huron - which was a phenomenal performance and easily in the top three five

That one exception? John Williams. I will buy and listen to anything g that man composes. Yeah, I should mention I'm far fonder of instrumental and orchestral music than I am signing.
Also, I like Nickleback. please dont hate me.

They are my 2nd favorite band after Skillet.
Skillet is my all time favorite band. I listen to their music on repeat and all day long. It is my gym music, my jam music, my fight song music. They are awesome

I've loved that hair metal play list since I was 6, and I'll still love it when I'm 106.
Actually, if I'm still alive in 66 years, I'm gonna be pretty pissed.

Unleashed has my all time favorite song, Feel Invincible, which is my life fight/theme song. It has been my favorite for years, i love rocking out to it.
Victorious is also really good, but also holds a very special place in my heart. The album was released the Friday before the Dayton Shooting last August, while I was camping, so i didn't get to listen to it until the following week. A very close friend of mine who was my brother in all but blood who was going to be invited to be one of the groomsmen at my wedding was killed in the shooting, and when that album dropped, the title song actually made me start crying at work. So much of the album was him, all the way. I listened to it all week, as hard as it was, and that same music was a comfort during his funeral.
Ever since, that album holds a very strong place in my heart, it was released at the right time for me, and it is something that reminds me of him and the incredible person that he was.

This is starting to sound very "High Fidelity" top 5 albums to listen to form start to finish. Easily one of my favorite movies. The geeky arguments get echoed on the threads here all the time.
Now that I'm thinking about it, I need to watch the new series. The trailer looks pretty good.

Gordon Lightfoot
I implore everyone here to listen to all of them.

At home, straight off the grill into a bowl of hot sauce (and other spicy things) and butter. Gotta hear that sizzle when they hit the sauce. A few tosses and serve.Rodimus Prime wrote:For the 1st time in a long time I had some wings. They weren't fancy, just basic grilled wings and tasted good. However, I've never been a fan of wings, in any form, whether spicy, honey, whatever. To me they're the same ascrab legs. Too much work for not enough meat. It was a free lunch and it tasted good, but it reminded me why I don't get wings when I go out to eat, much less prepare them at home.
So, wings. Yay or nay? If you like them, which way is your favorite?
Usually present the typical ranch and blue cheese dressing as something to dip them in. Sides can be just what ever you eat with grilled food or hot wings.
I also make "hot wings" (chunks of chicken or shrimp) in a skillet for salad as well. Same sauce, but just saute some little chunks of meat in a pan, at the spicy stuff right as the meat is almost cooked. It reduces down, sticks well and makes a bit of a sauce. Add the meat on top of a salad of what ever and use the same dressing options.
Not going lie, I prefer the salad. More filling, less work, same flavor.

I try to get the smallest wings possible, as they cook faster and better. I soak them overnight in buttermilk, and then let them drain. Heavily season, usually with paprika; Smokey, little bit of heat, nothing crazy. Then I pat-bake them, so I can fry them without burning.
Here’s the kicker: I bread them in a shredded potato mixture - litterally shredded hash browns mixed with instant mash potato flakes, fry ‘em up, and enjoy.
