The cannon is so large that the spaceship mode could also be called a "self propelled gun" and still be valid. I've heard Super Megatron's alt. mode described in the same way before. So it's confusing.
Semantics ... come on, man.
Flat out: Galvatron's canon doesn't need to be a problem in robot mode. I just don't accept that it HAS to be cumbersome and oversized.
Right now Maia King is my "dream come true" Galvatron. Even it isn't perfect, it's very close. The canon's not a problem for that toy - it's a feature. And it's LED light can blind you.
I think Titans Returns just wasn't the line for Galvatron. He'd be better off without the Headmaster gimmick or the 3rd mode. Maybe he'll appear again in Seige's sequel ... war for Cybertron, right? Whatever - hopefully Hasbro / Takara will give the guy another go. IMO, we just haven't gotten a truly great official Galvatron toy just yet.

*shrug* I don't think the cannon is oversize (and Mania King's doesn't look that much smaller, judging by photos). Or a problem in robot mode. Not perfect, certainly, but not an outright problem. All it needs to be perfect is some sort of clip or harness to attach to the side of the arm instead of on top (and preferably to the forearm). The size isn't the issue, the mounting point is.
The Headmaster gimmick doesn't hurt him, IMO, although sacrificing some paint on the tread pods to paint the exposed surfaces of Nucleon purple would have been a good call (one that the Legends version missed, I might add
). The implementation of the mask is spotty, but the gap part doesn't look that bad to me in-hand.
As for "better off without the third mode"? The only difference that would make is he'd be minus a couple of pegs and the cannons sculpted inside the paldrons
I think the starfighter mode looks a less dorky than the '86 Galvatron's third mode, which is a rather chunky raygun.
I personally think Titans Return was the line for Galvatron - and Hot Rod, Wheelie, Kup, Blurr, Scourge, and Arcee - simply because of the timing.

We're just gonna have to agree to disagree. I think TR Galvy is a poor attempt at Galvatron. It was KOed without the overlarge canon or the Headmaster gimmick and it's loads better.

He's MP sized tho.
Hot Rod, Wheelie, Kup, and Blurr are all pretty good in the TR line, actually. Scourge ... he's okay. He does the job of being Scourge. Arcee is a pink Blurr. I kinda wish I got her, but only because I have a few Arcees and it's almost a bad compulsion. She certainly exists and Blurr does a decent job at pretending to be Arcee. If I didn't already have a few Arcees and if she weren't placed beside Blurr I'd probably feel more positive about her.
But we're really off track from expressing disappointment in TFs.

Well, getting back on that note, I say again that Leobreaker is far more worthy of being on this list. Also, ROTF Megatron.

Why? The list is as honest as can be. I was just trying to explain why more disappointment was expressed in the second half of the brand's life than the first.

Not really a single Transformer so much as a group, but Transformers Go! as a whole was just...
It had so much potential. Okay, the individual bot modes were a little lackluster, but having three unique combined modes (actually different, not just limb swaps) for each team, plus two more for the team leaders and Optimus (in other words, seven guys that could form eight different combiners), was a concept with a lot of potential, and the combined modes looked decent.
It seemed like it would be pretty fun. What it actually turned out to be was a mess of overly-complex combiner transforms, defects/misassemblies, ratchet joints that aren't quite strong enough to hold up weapons, pegs and holes that aren't quite the right size relative to each other, thin tabs that break if you drop the toy on a carpeted floor, parts that get in each other's way...
I still want to like it, but...
