Transformers Combiner Wars Devastator - So Big It Needs Its Own Thread

I'm feeling the size, but I feel they could have done better... the head is way too small, now I guarantee he is as hollow as hollow gets. I mean think about the price... cheap and he is that big?.. it lacks alot. I would pay $200 more if he had more engineering. Metroplex for instance was brilliantly pulled off. But I do like the size and that's it.
And I've spent $400 bucks 3 times on a few combiners so I'm not hating at all

It's enormous and I like it. No sugarcoating necessary.

primalxconvoy wrote:If not, then I might actually buy my first 3rd party combiner, Green Giant, as I think (please, someone, post some comparrison pics!) it's in "scale" with the regular Combiner Wars gestaults, right?
That's entirely dependent upon what you want to have be "in scale", because the Hasbro set actually makes an attempt to have the vehicles themselves properly scaled to other vehicles. If you want the combined mode to be the same size as other combiners, then you've got yourself tiny baby construction vehicles. Quite frankly, scale and Transformers is a no-win situation.
primalxconvoy wrote:I think Hasbro have really dropped the ball here. I don't think kids will buy (all) of the toys (as they all look "the same") individually, and the price of such a huge toy will put parents off. I also think most collectors are either on the fence, or will just get a third party for this combiner instead.
Are you kidding - if I were a kid this would be a freakin' amazing giftset! If I had my own kids, getting them this giftset that's an awesome update to one I had as a kid would be so damn fun. But since I'm buying for myself, I can say that having a killer, faithful-to-a-fault G1 Devastator this size is going to be amazing. It's an adult-sized version of Devastator, where-in the Constructicons in hand will feel as big to me now as they did when I was 5 years old. And that's pretty cool.

Wow that's a big figure.
Hopefully they make an Omega Supreme who's par with Devy here.

Well that's because by RX logic, Hasbro doesn't make real Transformers.
No, my logic is just because somebody did something first, doesn't mean they did it best.![]()
Its just funny how many people are sugarcoating the size and forcing themselves to like it just because Hasbro made it. Ive never seen so many fan made theories on why devastator is bigger than the other combiners. Theyre willing to erase the G1 cartoon from their minds just to accommodate a Hasbro business decision. This set of pictures made every penny I spent on Hercules and upgrades worth it. ($750-800) Hell, I would have dropped a grand before trying to sugarcoat this oversized mess and shoehorn him into my collection. Thats just my opinion. Feel free to disagree, I know many will.
Or some of us just don't care about scale, at least when it comes to this particular toy.
Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean that there is something faulty with their logic. Not everyone is "sugarcoating the size" or "forcing themselves to like it."
And what makes "this particular toy" worthy of not caring about scale ? If someone likes the character enough to exempt scale from their requirements, they can just flat out say they are buying it because they are a super-duper devy fan. Theres no need to make up fan fiction to try to justify shoehorning it into your collection. Creating proposed cybertronian science theories on why devy is bigger than the other combiners just shows insecurity about the figures size. And that IS sugarcoating.
It's also a strawman seeing as so few people in this thread have been making any such arguments.
I don't care about scale for the most part when it comes to toys. I might try to put figures together that scale to each other for display, but proper scale is just not a big deal to me. I like the idea of a BIG Devastator, which is why I am buying this. In any event, I'll likely display him on his own anyway since he won't fit on my shelf.

Well whenever somebody hits you with the ol strawman accusation its safe to say we agree to disagree.
But seriously, why does Devy get a free pass with scale ? If it was menasor or Superion who got the super sized kiddie treatment half of these people would be in an uproar. They would all complain about how he doesnt scale with his arch rival. (I would too) But why does devy get a free pass ? Is it because all of his arch rivals werent combiners in the G1 cartoon ? (Omega supreme and dinobots) Am I the only one on this site that remembers when Bruticus kicked Devys ass ? If the theme is indeed "Combiner Wars" shouldnt they scale with each other for epic face offs and battles ? Or am I right about devy being made purposely as a big super sized kiddie toy targeting generous parents ? I dont "play" with my figures, I display them. So I need a devy that scales with the other combiners. I could care less about the scale of construction vehicles. I collect robots, not tonka trucks.

Like you said, agree to disagree.
I think you're right that Devy's unique position in the fiction (first combiner, six components, no defined rival) led to him being the choice for a stand-out figure in the line.
It would be nice to have a Devy that scales with the other toys in this line, I'll admit that. However, I like having some big display figures as well. I don't personally mind that he doesn't scale with the other figures because of his sheer size, but I can see how that might not fly with others who are more concerned about scale.

So we get a big ass devastator that is composed of 6 transforming robots that is fully articulated AND does not require you to fork over entire income to get it.
(Looks at camera) he will be mine, oh yes.

That "official" pic pretty much confirms the intended audience for larger scale "simplified" figures. In the "official" pictures of superion and menasor being played with, the kids were practically entering puberty.

Without further ado, the images in question, comparisons and all:

Personally, I think of Devy as the RIGHT scale.

It doesn't help that scale in the old media was drastically inconsistent... but when I remember back, I think of Devastator as this gigantic beast of destruction. The kind that reaches down and grabs other autobots and pummels them.
I remember some early appearances where the heroes practically wet themselves when he starts to combine. THAT is the right scale. Superion and menasor? I never had the same connection with them. They came later, they never seemed special. They were just Hasbros' way of making more money back then. I have no problem with the bandwagon jumpers being a bit smaller... a bit less impressive then DEVASTATOR. And the idea that it'll take Superion, Defensor, Ultra Prime and every other autobot to stand a chance against it... Kinda makes me a bit giddy

You're argument falls flat here since that giant Optimus toy is a Rescue Bot that doesn't even transform at all. Does it not make sense to photograph a toddler next to a preschool toy?Rated X wrote:carytheone wrote:MrBlack wrote:

Looking at devastator, i think he will scale nicely with the leader class figures.

Remember, Devastator is considered the biggest combiner ever, I think it works perfectly. And plus, Devastator is the original combiner, so he deserves such a big figure!

Devy was the original Combiner, which makes him really special to many of us. And he has had a fair share of foes who took a lot to beat him: Omega was his enemy a good bit of the time and he's a frikkin rocket ship and base! Plus, more recently, it took both Superion and Defensor to beat him, so he's got a record everywhere he goes. Plus he's make of 6 big guys, and honestly if each was a deluxe, he'd be dwarfed by the torso pieces for the regular combiners.
Besides, he looks cool to me, I really like how he looks, it'll be my first G1 Devy and honestly, I'm not too picky. I like Hastak stuff, and I don't do 3rd party stuff, so I guess I'm just a simple collector who has a wide variety of likes. I'm not picky. And most people are like that too.

I'm looking for parts, Help Me Out Please!

I gotta go with you D-Maximus, Devastator is really special to me, I would have been much less happy with the classic voyager with four deluxes, because Devastator is made of six members! Not 5! And look at how WFC Bruticus turned out! I would much rather have a giant badass bulky Devastator than a small lanky one to scale with the other combiners!

I think in the TF fandom, scale is a pointless argument. I think it boils down to this: if you like a figure, think it will fit into your collection and is worth the price of admission, then add it to your collection.
I was already on team Titan Devy, but those last few pictures really cemented it for me.
Pre-orders can't open soon enough. And at the end of the day, I'm the only one that will be handling/admiring my collection anyways.
