Why is there so much speculation about price? Hasbro officially announced the retail price would be $149.99 U.S. all the way back in February. No one should have any trouble locating one for that price. Now the SDCC and Takara Tomy versions on the other hand...
I think that's what everyone is talking about now. What the SDCC price will be...
As Jay5 pointed out, I really hope they do NOT jack the price up something fierce. The #1 thing Hasbro's version has going for it is size. #2 is price. At $150 it really can't compare with the $400-$500 Giants and Hercules...
However if they jack the price up to $250, $300, whatever.... that comparison is going to REALLY be brought to the front. What people see as flaws are going to be very difficult to dismiss at that point.
$150?? Yeah. That's a great price.

Bingo. I love the more detailed, complex, and thoughtful models like the Green Giant in comparison to true G1 Devastator. If it's $399 for GG vs $150-$200 for SDCC, no question, SDCC gets my purchase because it's not worth over twice the price to me for a GG. But if SDCC creeps above $200, that GG starts to become much more of a consideration.
I see what you guys are saying. Personally however, even if I have to pay $300 to get an SDCC version from a scalper off eBay, I'd still go that route over the current two third party options - without a moment of hesitation. For me, the Hasbro set has 3 things going for it that the 3rd parties do not:
1. Scale with Masterpiece line
2. Aesthetics fit with the Masterpiece line
3. In masterpiece fashion, individual robots are dead ringers for the original characters
Scaled-up Deluxe-class engineering or not, I want Scrapper, Mixmaster, Long Haul, Hook, Scavenger and Bonecrusher. Not...just some green robots who turn into construction vehicles. Which is what I personally feel you're getting with both Green Giant and Hercules.
