MR Optimus Prime wrote:Rated X wrote:The molds just dont work for those characters. Prowl looks ok but the other 3 are hideous. The fact that these repaints even appear in a comic to justify their existance is Hasbro really scraping the crud off the bottom of the barrel. I think they should have just stuck to Victorion and the G2 repaints. These lazy repaints are more of an insult to the characters rather than a homage. If they wanted to reissue the characters they should have dusted off the original classics molds and given the US more cartoon accurate decos than the first time around. They could just slap the "Combiner Wars" monkier on the packages like they did with Armada Megatron, Huffer, and other figures shoehorned into the line. That would have been so much better than giving the characters a downgrade.
I only don't like Ironhide. They are only doing these repaints for us older fans. Since these are already made, might as well get more use out of them right?

This gets me wondering 2 things.
1. Was the Masquerade ever confirmed officially? Because from what I remember, it was just a fan stating this when the listing was leaked and then it just kept getting a confirmation bias when everyone was using that name in the news posts across TF fan sites. But I dont think this was ever more than just a fan name/idea. If anyone actually has a source that this is the actual theme, please send the link. Because or else, this calling it the "masquerade Combiner" is the same as saying there are alligators in the sewers.
2. This point is the more important one. I just got Blackjack today and the first thing I thought of was, "what are they waiting for making this a Runabout and Runamuck redeco". Takara is already doing a Runabout deco. And now looking at that message using these molds for bringing back old TFs, I was wondering about the Throttlebots. If Blackjack was used to make the Battlechargers and some throttlebots would we fans call that lazy? Or would we like it?

I don't know what they look like, but I would probably be all over them;

You'll know him better as Universe 2003 Micromaster Defensor.
The Mixmaster Six-Teams only have 4 themes:
1) Race and Rescue (Sixturbo)
2) Aircraft (Sixwing)
3) Construction (Sixbuiler)
4) Trains (Sixliner & Sixtrain
The Construction Team is of special interest, since they use exactly the same vehicle modes as the Constructicons (and were even redecoed as them) so a Sixbuilder homage is easy to make. Sixwing is basically Superion, only with a Space Shuttle and Helicopter in the mix.

Great but what about:
Landcross:
Wingwaver out of Silverbolt
Dash out of Breakdown
Tackle out of First Aid (or just keep Ironhide like that and call him Tackle)
Tacker out of Rook
Mach out of Blastoff (BURN!)

I mean, we've compiled at least 3, much cooler combiners that could use the existing molds, in under 30 minutes Even if hasbro couldn't secure the names, we would see the homage, and love them for it, but, no, we just get another set of characters we all have

But I can see why hasbro didnt go for it. While the 84 team is not original, it is probably more profitable than any of these. A few of these didnt even get issued in the US.

Exactly: the more obscure the character, the less people know him, ergo the less people that would be eager to buy it.

I honestly don't know about that; the only people who really recognize them probably have superior versions of most, if not all of them, those that don't probably wouldn't care either way. There doesn't seem to be a ton of people that are super excited for this release, even going all the way back to the leaked art; reception to it has seemed kind of dead-panned.
Now does this mean that it won't sell, of course not, but that doesn't mean that hasbro could have gotten away with something a little more obscure. AS I said the collectors would appreciate the obscure homage, and the random kids/parents wouldn't care either way, so it is still the same thing. How can Ironhide be more recognizbale - outside the collectors sphere, because of course we recognize him - than some micromaster? Ironhide hasn't been in a show since G1 I believe. He wasn't in animated, prime or rid'15, so your arguement is sorta groundless.

But Ironhide and all these 84 bots are in the comics. These micromasters arent.

But collectors know who they are, so the argument can only be applied to kids and parents who don't know who they are. And apart from the comics, the only ones who have been in a tv show were prowl (energon, maybe?), mirage (a bad guy boat form energon, not much recognizability there), and smokescreen (armada, prime?) so they are prety much as obscure as any micromaster.

A lot of your friends gave other good examples above as to why kids would know them. Movies and their parents sharing their nostalgia. There is also the fact that its parents who buy toys for their kids and they can be inclined to get something they recognise from their childhood. A lot of marketting decisions (if not all) are targeted at the buyer even though they are not the main consumer. The reason why men's underwear have hunks (ripped male models) on them is actually to attract women since it was found in many studies that men's underwear are predominantly bought by women instead of men.
That aside, for the case of Prowl and Ironhide, kids do know them in those colours due to their appearance on android and apple apps. Like in the RID app. I went to a friend's house and his kid was showing me his RID ipad game and showed me all the characters he was proud to have unlocked, which included Prowl and Ironhide.

If I'm being honest it just stems from my disappointment from these two sets (the '84 teams) I wish they had more decepticons, and I wish they weren't the same figures that I've passed on so many times before, so, I dunno...
