Hey, welcome to Seibertron, man
Well, you have options, every one has they're merit's, so here you go:
Superion for overall cohesion and the nicest, most solid combined mode, the slim arms and legs make him look very proportionate. He truly comes together the best in combined mode, and is far and away the best overall.
Galvatronus + 4 limbs of your choosing for all the perks of superion (see above) - but in evil purple. The '
limb freedom' means that you can choose your favorites, or just the best limbs, overall.
Defensor is big, bulky and very well-realized. The backpack on hotspot is a work of art, and hotspot himself is an excellent figure. The only downside is the stick arm that blades can/will provide - exacerbated by pairing him with rook as arms, and the fact that most of defensor's articulation is obstructed at the shoulders. This can be rectified slightly by getting the
TT's UW Defensor as bigroove makes a fairly slim arm, and has the 'true G1' look going for it - if that's important to you.
'84 limb's, as Optimus Maximus (or whatever) will likely disappoint you if he is your only combiner, I would say avoid that torso (also why there is no mm recommendation);
HOWEVER the limbs themselves, are very enjoyable, and pull off each mold very well (prowl in particular easily beats out streetwise, and I would go as far as recommending that you swap prowl into defensor), and they definitely work nicely with superion.
Bruticus seems to fix most of the issue's defensor has, and his torso mode seems even more solid as well. His limbs are very well proportioned and (apart from brawl) his individual figures offer a great variety, something no other combiner can quote offer.
My final opinion would be:
If you want a 'team' go Bruticus or Superion
If you want a great combiner go superion/galvatronus torso + 4 limbs; you can pm me if you want a run down on the individual figures, or watch some reviews.
