By being not evenly remotely accurate to the characters looks or having any key throw backs to the original toy (mini hot rod, tank treads, bonnetted truck, car carriers etc). The smaller figure didnt even need to transform into anything so they could have focused on the truck/trailer -the extensive retooling on the smaller figure was pretty much wasted and misguided just to show Convoy powers up to only kinda look like Star Convoy in bot mode from groin upwards. Even Star convoys chest windows are the wrong shape.

I think you misunderstood what the figure represents and what Takara Tomy was trying to achieve. It isn't really Star Convoy. It's an Optimus Prime/Convoy figure with a Star Convoy-like power up, but not actually Star Convoy. This was made clear in his accompanying comics well before his release. I have a reissue Star Convoy and I think the Selects figure did a fantastic job of capturing his bot mode. It hasn't left my desk since his release.

And no matter how you feel about the figure the work put into it was nothing short of extensive just as it has been with King Poseidon, Super Megatron, and God Neptune (who has further retooling). I don't expect anything less from Volcanicus, it just wouldn't fit their track record.

Emerje

Maybe not.

Maybe so, otherwise you wouldn't have said all the stuff I italicized above that had no reason to exist on this figure or that the Optimus figure didn't need to Transform. And it wasn't just from the "groin up", he had new lower legs, too.

Look, I'm not saying you have to like the figure, you can hate it all you want, it's fine. But you can't say the retooling is lazy when some 50% or so of the original base figure has been replaced with new parts.

Anyway, I like the idea of the new figure being a new character based on concept art. Not entirely sure how that factors into the text saying it's a returning warrior. We can tell just from the silhouette how much it has already changed compared to the original figure.

The shoulders sit higher (or the head sits lower) and he has those new nubs on his shoulders next to the half dome bit.

I finally managed to nab Exhaust. Gotta say, I like him a lot. I'm sticking with Universe Wheeljack, so this is my first time with the mold. In hand I don't mind the plainness as much as I thought I would.

I got lucky too. I picked him up from EB games and found his legs glued together inside the hip. So if I made a kicking motion both legs would move. Lucky for me another EB games had one left so I managed to exchange it.

I wonder if that's a common issue on this figure. I got Exhaust from Megalopolis Toys, and mine had the hip pegs glued as well. I didn't want the hassle of exchanging him through the mail, so I cracked his pelvis open and separated the fused parts with a saw.

I'm still betting it's Dinoking, and here's why:

1) At Hascon 2017, POTP Snarl was shown with a molded twin gun over his Stegasaurus head, just like the one in Dinoforce.

2) POTP Dinobots wear their weapons on their backs in Dino mode, just like Dinoforce.

3) At Hascon 2017, Cutthroat was initially presented with a Wildfly head, so the tooling for at least one new head exists.

4) I understand that Volcanicus's head is different than DinoKing's, but that didn't stop Hasbro from using the Superion head for Computron for cost-saving. I know that Takara has usually been more faithful to G1, but times are hard, Takara was struggling even before COVID, and they might go for the cash grab with the few thousand people that would even want a Dinoking.

5) Shells - like Bludgeon, these Dino Decepticons may become their pretender shell instead of having one.

The tooling exists, so one way or another, we're getting a Dinoking.

"Times being Hard" I don't think would factor into TT decision. I'm pretty sure this will be the aforementioned unused Dinosaur Combiner Concept.

I don't think there is anyone here who Dosen't want a Dinoking/Monstructor. I've stayed away from 3P but been sorely tempted to get the FP Saurus-Ryu-Oh and Beastructor. The hope that TT will give us official ones eventually is the only thing that has prevented it (well that and the fact that they are extremely expensive).

Remember waaaay back, when the first images of PotP Snarl were shown, and he had an extra gun in dino mode, above his head?

Maybe they are FINALLY using that gun to make Dinoking.

Doesn't explain the blue eyes though on the tease...

Problem is, dinoking is a 6 member gestalt...there was only 5 sets of eyes teased, that and I don't think Takara would update Dinoking unless they did it properly, meaning all 6 members being used, and two forming the torso. Things like the guns on snarl and wildfly as the alternate swoop head would be okay for Hasbro (example, their Leokaiser), Takara? Nope, not good enough.

Exactly.

I'm just as guilty as anyone though, until we get the official reveal THIS is the top contender IMHO:

Not Dinoking or Monstructor (although I would love it)
Not G2 or SG, or a simple Volcanicus re release or upgrade.

If Takara ever release Monstructor or Dinoking, they'll retool it to get the other one out of it. That being said, it won't be in the Selects line as all the releases in the line from both sides have been redecos and retools (serious retools but you get the idea).

Here's the real question, how long do you think we'll be waiting to see who it is?

Had to make me look back ;).

Anyways it appears TT Revealed their selects line on 4/4/19 with a full color version of Star Convoy all ready to go, and silhouettes of Turtler and Super Megatron.

on 4/18/19 the first grayscale pics of Turtler were revealed, so 14 days (basically 2 weeks). There was some fear it would only be Turtler and not the whole team, but of course they were all revealed in time (I'm not sure exactly when, I didn't look how far ahead).

So, it was 14 days for Turtler, but who knows. IIRC most of the UW silhouettes would go a couple months until it was revealed usually shortly before the official release of the next UW toy, so there was always something to look forward to. It's amazing to think after 18 months Super Megatron though will finally be a reality (as in actually released). I still feel bad for anyone who wants Armada Prime though

I believe the wait time for God Neptune was so short because, well , it was pretty obvious ;)

Speaking of that Armada Prime they showed way back, Im not wanting it for actual Optimus Prime. I hope, and expect, they will release a Nemesis repaint. That is the one I am waiting for. All these years I havent bought any of the Nemesis/Scourge/Black Convoys because I was waiting on a updated Armada Prime one. But who knows, they have said nothing since its original showing that I remember. I am super pumped to finally get Super Megs though.

I guess I never paid close enough attention that he comes with both Sideswipe's and Red Alert's accessories, minus the lightbar.
