What are they? I haven't seen them before

That's Dinoking, a Japan-only redeco of Monstructor:

Image
Transformers G1 1989 Monstructor Gallery

They were released in 1989, well after the cartoon ended in the US.

Monstructor is the combined form of the Pretender Monsters. As per their name, they changed into "monsters" and as Pretenders they had monstrous shells, made of rubbery plastic (that didn't age well). In Japan their shells were replaced with Dinosaur ones, matching the original Dinobots plus a new genus for the sixth member.

The layout for those wondering:

Triceratops & Brontosaurus (Kakuryu & Rairyu): Torso
Pteranodon & Ankylosaurus (Yokuryu & Gairyu): Arms
Tyrannosaurus & Stegosaurus (Goryu & Doryu): Legs

It would be really nice if they remembered the latter series combiners. Considering the Legacy line has super jumped from UT to IDW...

It's an incentive to buy them all. Core Class has now become the main price point for parents and kids I think, so it's one of those "collect them all!" type of thing.

Razorbeast88 wrote:Tarn looking ugly in the poster tbh

That's cause there more to it than just being Tarn's face, as they said in the feed.

D-Maximal_Primal wrote:Needlenose: about damn time, a bit disappointed in how simple he looks, but still happy he is here.

Yeah, that's the sacrifice for including 2 targetmasters. Gen Scoop was also very very simple (as were his targetmasters).

ZeroWolf wrote:I would be surprised if Armada prime isn't the commander class.

We'll see. I know Hasbro prefers having prime in the leader class slot since that makes him more visible at retail to kids and parents.

Nope, we will be waiting a bit longer for that

Hopefully, since there's no other representation for this series announced....
:-D

We already know all the leaders being released next year in Legacy Evolution. They are:

Prime Skyquake
Prime Dreadwing
Armada Megs
And repacks of Blitxwing, Laser OP and TM2 Megs.

As for my personal thoughts:

LOVE Tarn. He is everything I wanted. I have not felt this excited about TF toys for a long time. And really happy with Scraphook. Not only is it a new character and new design but it is a new type of transformer/transformation.

For Leo Prime, really like the bot mode but I really don't like that Lion face. I get that they wanted to keep the realistic beast mode bit but:
a) He isn't part of the same collection/set as the other Beast Wars guys, so there's no need for a unified aesthetic
b) Similarly, he isn't based on a CG model which was "trying" to be realistic, he's a 2d hand drawn character
c) There are 2 different lion faces on that show, a robotic one and a cartoony one, and they went with neither
d) As a big fan of Full metal Alchemist, that lion face is giving me flashbacks I would rather NOT HAVE!

eh ... like you said, they look good regardless.

Um, . . . no.

Motormaster, absolutely. Menasor is "cartoon accurate" to some of the laziest, slipshod animation the 80's had to offer. He's no more a combiner than a cheerleading squad climbing on each other's shoulders to make a pyramid. The cars are totally irrelevant and unnecessary to the "combined" form. They're just hangers-on. It barely qualifies as a half-assed attempt. While I do have some issues with CW Menasor, at least he doesn't remind me of some cheap, Chinese bootleg knock-off.

I'll be honest I really, really, really don't like 'toon Menasor as it was born out of a very bad misinterpretation of how the G1 toys combined, but if people like it they like it.
That being said I do believe OP was probably referring to stability, since CW Menasor's hips and waist section weren't the best on top of having no ankle tilts to compensate the large hip ratchet detents. (Not without getting unofficial feet upgrades, unlike Legacy's Menasor that has them from the get go.) As well as CW Menasor having shoulders that would frequently untab if the arm was rotated forward due to the strong ratchets of the limbs.

I still do largely prefer CW Menasor over Legacy Menasor, mainly due to better resembling the G1 toy for the most part and the limb bots actually forming limbs. (The issues mentioned above haven't affected my set that much thankfully ;)^ ) But, yeah, I can see why OP meant Legacy Menasor is superior over CW Menasor. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, however!

Me too. I can't wait for the Galvo-Leo-Prime and Black Leo Prime repaints too! Slightly "wonky" lion face aside, I'm glad I passed on the MP releases as I'm more excited for the Legacy version.

Alright, went into this expecting like 4 buys from Wave 1, came out planning on getting all of Wave 1  I really hope that the sorta muscle car looking Junkion gets repainted into Lockdown cause this gimmick is MADE for him. Someone pointed out the Animated Space Bridge in the background of the poster which says to me the Prowl is probably Animated's version.

In regards to the combining Dinobots, I wasn't gonna get any of the Core Dinobots, but knowing they combine has gotten me in on them. Can't help it, I like combining Dinobots

Tarn looks amazing, as does Lio Convoy, though that lion face looks bad.

Based off rumors, I'm going with the titan is the Nemesis with the Decepticon face. Commander should be Armada Prime, especially with the Laser Prime repack serving as the affordable Prime for the line. Maybe we'll see Overload and Jetfire next year?

Great reveals. I love the variety.

Personally, I'll most likely get Tarn and Needlenose only. I'm not much for core class (not bad, just not my taste) and I've always been of the opinion that jets should always be at least voyager sized. If Needlenose had been voyager, I guarantee you that underside kibble wouldn't be there.

I'm kind of split on Tarn, because he's a good looking piece, but realistically, are we going to get the rest of the DJD? Maybe only if their alt modes are changed to conventional vehicles. Or maybe it they come in Selects. What's the point of having only Tarn and not the rest?

Hotshot doesn't look bad, but I already have the universe figure and that's pretty good. As for Scraphook, I like it. Looks good in both modes and has potential. Energon Landmine, anyone?
