The studio series deluxes, cyberverse deluxes and generations deluxes are all at the same price point and sold in the toy sections of Walmart next to other kid toys (in my case, star wars). They are still kid toys for kids, with a and Hasbro keeps reiterating that, since that's where most of their money is coming from (well, their parents, but you know what I mean). there are different age groups among kids though. For preschoolers, there's rescue bots, for a bit older (their sweet spot where kids are 5 and haven't been fully consumed by video games yet), you have most of the cyberverse line, and for older kids (age 8 and up) you have the toys that collectors like too. They do of course cater a lot to fans, so they can get their money too, which is a nice chunk. But you can compare those to actual collector toys, like the new McFarlane DC line and that one makes it clear that it's not for kids and parents should not buy them, thanks to a big bold 12+ marking for all to see.

You make a good point. All Transformers sold at retail are toys meant for kids to play with, hence they all have to adhere to U.S. toy safety laws, etc. However, Hasbro is more aware than ever of the appeal to adult collectors, hence the huge emphasis on G1 nostalgia that permeates the Generations toylines now. The age range for Generations: War for Cybertron and Studio Series may, in fact, skew a little older than 8 years and up. The Cyberverse Deluxe Class actually proves my point on how Hasbro is thinking about Transformers now. That was a size class they had skipped for the first year and a half of the Cyberverse line, because it was aimed at kids in between Rescue Bots and Generations. However, the Cyberverse cartoon has had some appeal to older fans, prompting them to collect those characters, but the toys they had on offer aren't appealing to adult collectors. Hence, the new Deluxe Class in Cyberverse that offers sculpts, transformations, and paint apps more in line with the Generations line, which does appeal to adult collectors.

william-james88 wrote:And I don't see much of a divide price wide either, it's just a numbers game. The cyberverse warriors and deluxes are an excellent comparison. One is 33% pricier, but also has that much more paint, articulation and complexity (or more). It's just the idea of pricing things correctly so that parents can still buy them, and collectors too, while competing with other lines. I still think that these are the best toys on the market for the price, the engineers (not designers, the actual engineers who come up with plastic composition to fit the price points) and working overtime on this.

Indeed, the price gap isn't huge, but it's there, just like the widening divide between Transformers lines meant for specific age groups. That's still something relatively new to Transformers that had started around the time of the first live action movie line in 2007 and has been evolving since then. Your point on the engineering is right in line with what I'm talking about with the "full circle" evolution of Transformers toys since G1. Transformers were high end toys in 1984, requiring lots of different materials (opaque plastic, clear plastic, die-cast metal, paint, vacuum-metalized "chrome" parts, and stickers) and were more expensive than we remember. We had a period of time when design and engineering techniques got easier and less expensive, leading to bigger and more affordable (mostly plastic) toys. Now we're coming up against a time again when cost of production is going up, this time because the cost of raw materials is increasing, so engineers have to figure out how to do more with less, and after trying to find their stride during the T30 and Prime Wars Generations lines, we've hit a nice balance where we are getting fantastic figures at just a bit more cost than we were used to over the past decade. You can't argue with the results. Figures are smaller, yes, but they are generally better products overall than we've had for the past several years, in terms of design, complexity, paint applications, and best of all, screen accuracy. :)

Glad you came around on Earthrise Grapple! He's really a great figure. The transformation isn't very involved, but it is so effective in giving him his cartoon look in robot mode and a very good alternate mode as well. I'm amazed how much G1 detail they packed into him. He really is like a mini Masterpiece figure, just without that "ladder magic," which, honestly, I can easily forgive for $30 USD.

Mind had that too. Excess glue used between the 2 crotch halves got onto the hip joint. I used a pair of pliers with a smooth grip to grab the hip itself and rotate it to break it free. It worked for me and mine has been just fine. Had it not worked, I would have returned/exchanged him.

Not to beat a dead horse but I finally remembered to bring one of my PotP leaders home and I weighed both Rodimus Unicronus and Astrotrain with tender and guns. While the leader is definitely heavier without a doubt, I gotta ask how much of the cost goes into engineering? The leader is like a block while Astro has all sorts of flips and folds, panels that do this and that.

And speaking of engineering, Cliffjumper was delivered today and he is seriously one cool lil dude! The backpack fits right on the back so it won't get lost and his gun is probably even bigger than he is. Ratbat and Rumble included for size reference.

Oh, I also had a pack of the Siege card game in my Hasbro Pulse delivery even though I didn't order one. Order gift?

so, Best Buy having toys is awesome, I felt like I was hunting again. I went to my (not so) local BB for something elese, I had been there a week ago and found the Earthrise tags, and today I found a Wheeljack sitting there! So nice to be surprised like that.

Wheeljack is my first Deluxe for Earthrise but was the one I was most excited about (Ironworks a close second). I dont exactly lile how squat the bot mode is but I LOVE the Car and the Transformation, especially compered to transforming Gen Wheeljack. Earthrise Jackie reminds me in a way of Prime Wheeljack.

At first, I was especially impressed with how the dashboard section of the windshield folds out of the knee. Simple trick but not very often seen... And then I figured out you had to get them all three lined up just right. That took a second to get it mashed up. I wish the two had some small overlapping tabs but oh well. Needs more gun, and I wish the car had some side mounted 5mm ports, but overall I love this figure. I hope the Selects Exhaust rumor is true, I want more of this mold

aronjlove, would you like to take some measurements of Cliffjumper's mass, both with and without all of his accessories, so we can compare that to some other Deluxe figures in the first wave of Earthrise? :)

Oof, that's quite a difference in plastic. Though you're right about engineering playing a large role, makes me wonder how their parts counts compare. :-?

And nice haul with Cliffjumper! He looks pretty good.

To add to the requests, would anyone be able to take some comparison pictures with ER Cliffjumper and Classics Bumblebee? I'm a bit curious how they look together.

Here's Cliffjumper with and without accessories. This was easy as he is small enough to fit entirely on the scale, and his accessories combine into one big gun. Unfortunately, I don't have another Cliffjumper or Bumblebee for comparison, but here are a couple of shots with PotP Tailgate. The first is to show what I mean about engineering, Cliffy literally folds in half with his bottom spinning around. Meanwhile, Tailgate just lays down and flips his legs up. The second is just for scale and to show the size of the accessory again.

Saw ER Micromasters for the first time yesterday (though I am not into them), and one lonely Smashdown in front of a dozen or so Siege BM's still on the peg. Didn't have time to ask an employee if there were more in the back, still haven't seen soundbarrier or any deluxes yet however...

Since I got my taxes back I splurged and got a big order on BBTS. Since Ironworks was the only deluxe of the first wave I wanted, I added him to the shipment, because why not. Having him in hand, he is even more impressive than the Siege Weaponizers, and more innovative IMHO (not that the others were bad but...) I guess its nice to see things improve rather than regress. Also I love the new system they have that keeps the limbs locked in tight, but easily removable.

I wonder what is going to happen to retail right now. They apparently still have a lot of Siege stock while the fandom has moved on to Earthrise. I'm sure what they are losing in TF sales they are making up in TP sales lol but what happens if this craziness goes on? I'm about to order Wheeljack and Hoist from Hasbro Pulse because I haven't found either at retail and with all the Covid19 concerns I may stop going to retail stores for a bit. I work for a community college and we just informed students today that Spring Break has been extended for a week. So if everyone decides to order their stuff online, what does that do to retail shelves? Will we still see Siege on shelves when the third part of the trilogy rolls around???

In that case, I'm going to guess that the number of accessories is also questionable at best being 8.

I wonder if the somehow confused 8 items in the box for 8 accessories? Japanese listings, which are probably more accurate since they're from Takara Tomy and don't mention Astroscope, list 3 fire blasts plus 2 figure, 2 weapons, and instructions (probably no decoder or map piece in this box).

[Set Contents]
-Autobot Skylynx figure (Shuttle) x1
-Autobot Skylynx figure (Base) x1
-Figure parts x2
-Effect part x3
-Instruction paper x1

"Don't get me started on the Titan Class..."

This sounds like most of us with Generations from 2012 to 2013 (Fall of Cybertron and start of the IDW comic pack ins). The figures got smaller, simpler, and the price went up from Gen Deluxe wave 1 through around 7 or 8 when we got noticeably better figures like Waspinator, Skids, Minicon Assault Team and Scoop (not a complex figure, but at least he came with his Targetmaster partners). Unfortunately when the Deluxes got better the Legends scale lost their partners in Combiner Wars.

By the way, if you're looking for Soundbarrier he's finally starting to show up on Amazon at retail price, not the ridiculously jacked up scalper-like price he's been listed at. He's currently unavailable at retail price, but at least we know he's showing up.

New Takara Tomy Stock Photos for Earthrise Sky Lynx and Smokescreen

A new round of pre-orders have opened in Japan for Transformers War for Cybertron: Earthrise! This batch consists of the magnificent ER-06 Sky Lynx and ER-07 Smokescreen. Unlike some figures from the line these two will not be Takara Tomy mall exclusives, though Sky Lynx's photos did get a bit of that TTM touch. Sky Lynx is listed as being released in July which is earlier than the Hasbro release that seems to range from August to October depending on the store.

Smokescreen will cost ¥3,080 ($29 USD) and be packed with three guns, but it appears he'll benefit from some eventual custom labels from Toyhax to really finish the back of the car. Sky Lynx will retail for ¥ 14,300 ($135 USD) and include two guns and three effect parts, additional effects shown in photos are borrowed from Omega Supreme.

if there aren't any QC issues with sky lynx, he's easily shaping up to be one of the most impressive figures released. The commander class size is great as it seems to allow the designers get lots of detail and be true to the anime...

Not that many other characters off the top of my head I could think of that haven't been done already. Powermaster prime and overlord would've been quite cool, though I really enjoy the last versions of those we got. A downsized Fort Max and Skorponok for the comic book fans? Maybe a transforming Ark or nemesis taking the micromaster base approach...

I think a transforming Ark would be better in the Titan Class, especially because Scorponok is the last big cityformer. Yeah, they might redo Metroplex, but at the end of the day, they're still running low on Titans

I hope that the actual retail samples of Earthrise Smokescreen will have the shoulder launchers painted silver or white, at the very least. I can deal with the main gun being solid blue plastic, but the shoulder launchers have to be the right color for me. Otherwise, I hope that the ones from the Siege Selects version fit properly into the Earthrise mold.
