In the beginning the Autobots and neither the Decepticons could transform at all.
Then due to the war, the Autobots turned to stealth and invented the art of transforming.
So yeah... Transformers weren't always Transformers, but just plain robots, consumer goods and military hardware
That's all well and fine, but our buddy Magnus DOES transform. So he's got no business showing up naked and non-transforming.
Yes, i have seen the g1 series back in 84/86. But this is not what this toy line is about. This is a non-transformable toy-line, just as Revoltech or Mighty Muggs to give an example.
Frankly, for that kind of money, neither am I interested in purchasing it. But I still love the kind of craftsmanship put into it.
Highly detailed, lots of metal, electronics... it's appealing eventhough it wasn't meant to transform. At a different price-range I would buy him because it still is Optimus/Ultra Magnus, in a gorgeous robot-form.
