Unlike any other 3p toy I have, this one feels not more complex than it should be and it feels really well planned. Better than any MPM movie toy this year. It feels like a Hasbro/Takara toy from 2010. Really glad bought it and it being the same price as MPM04 makes buying it a no brainer.
Awesome! He looks amazing, I kinda want him myself.
Out of interest, what other 3P stuff do you have? I only ask because I could probably recommend some decent 3Ps that you might enjoy. There's so much on the market that it's borderline impossible to speak for the quality of them all.
EvilaStar (Not Astrotrain) and Applyon
I forgot I also have Generations Toy Gravity Builder which I really like and I used to own Feral Rex which I happily sold.
Well, here's some recs based on what I think you might like.
WARNING: Wall of text incoming!
Maketoys Despotron, if you can get behind the stylized look, is fantastic. Actually has the most straightforward transformation of any MP-alike Megatron, and is built like a goddamn battleship. Very little kibble, only real downsides are stylization (subjective) and slightly out of proportion gun mode (barely noticable really).
If you want a smaller Devy for any reason, Giant is a superb toy. His individual components range from a bit dated but still cool (Scrapper, Hook) to absolutely superb (every other figure, but especially the arm bots and Long Haul IMO) and the combined mode is probably the most solid feeling combiner I've ever handled.
FP's Crossfire set is pretty cool, providing you don't get a KO (my copy was either a KO or a QC dud). The combined mode is kind of too small by modern standards and nothing is going to make Energon Barricade into a decent Onslaught, but the Swindle and Blast Off are really cool figures and the weapons are a lot of fun.
I've only briefly handled him, but Maketoys (yes I am a massive MT fanboy my apologies) Galaxy Meteor (AKA Cybertron Starscream) is a thing of absolute beauty. Built really well, RIDICULOUSLY poseable for his size and design, simple but ingenious transformation and despite technically being an MP he works really well with CHUG due to the source material and his abstract nature. Oh, and it's getting a Thundercracker and Skywarp redeco too! I haven't handled him but a friend of mine says that Howling Meteor is pretty much the definitive MP G1 Screamer too.
Maketoys entire Cross Dimension line, if you dig the look, is very well made and a lot of fun. And yes I will stop stroking Maketoys' ego now!
The FP Insecticons, but especially the "Deluxe" redecoes are pretty cool. Simple and a bit dated maybe, but nicely made and not over-engineered. Also the Deluxe Insecticons scale nicely with the Generations Legends bugs if you prefer the toy scale. (Note: I haven't handled them myself, YMMV)
Perfect Effect's old Reflector is tiny, but really nifty. Very poseable for how small they are and not massively fiddly. And the way they manage their partsforming is RID Prime level genius. (Again, not handled myself, just going off others' experiences.)
Finally, if you want some Legends scale fun then there's the DX9 Stormtroopers, AKA teeny tiny Seekers. Again, I haven't handled them myself but they're not very expensive on the aftermarket and they're exceedingly good Seekers. I'd argue that they're actually better toys than the Classics mold, which at half the size is no mean feat!
There's probably others I could recommend but I'd be here all day. In any event, those are ones I either know for sure or can confidently say are good. For example, I love the MT Protectobots but they're very much love-or-hate figures. And there's others I think look cool but may be of questionable quality (most of TFC's figures).
And finally, avoid KFC/X-Transbots like Cosmic Rust. They're baaaaaaad.
Hope that helps entice you down the rabbit hole of 3P!
