- Motto: "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes"
Before I go off on an incoherent rant, let me preface everything I’m about to say with this: I truly do enjoy Beast Wars. It came out when I was in college and reignited my enjoyment for a brand, I thought dead, especially after G2. I enjoyed the show and the toys, and I hope they do get a well-deserved comeback, an entirely trilogy of Generations toys would be great. However, I am also a fan of seeing things through to the finish, which is what frustrates me about Hasbro. They always seem to leave things behind unresolved. Some obvious omissions are released in time and others are not. PotP gets cut short, Siege gets an extra wave, and an unforeseen Pandemic is messing with everything else since.
I’m sure this was not the plan initially, but looking back on the Prime Wars Trilogy, and what we are in the middle of now (WFC), in many ways it mirrors the original series. The original Series (in the United States at least), had 7 years of product from 1984-1990. These current 6 product lines, encompassing 2 Trilogies began in 2015, and *hopefully* will conclude late 2021/early 2022, barring real world situations, is in MY EYES basically The Original Series AGAIN, 30 years later. This time however, instead of being driven by an Animated Series and to a lesser extent, a comic book, sales are driven almost purely by nostalgia. (The Animated Series and comic books supporting these lines are dubious at best) I’d like to see Hasbro finish out releasing as many previously overlooked characters from the 84-90 original run in these 3 lines as can be done. Of course, there are many legendary characters that are released in every line, if not multiple times over the past few years, but there are still many that aren’t.
Early last year, WFC part 2 was rumored to be “Armageddon” which proved to be false, although some of the toys product that was rumored did in fact come true. My point is this. There are plenty enough characters still in the 84-90 line (especially if you include Japanese and European characters), that haven’t had a release yet, that we don’t need Beast Wars…just yet. It’s a tricky thing, because I appreciate how the fandom wants to celebrate BW 25th in 2021 with something BIG! And rightfully so. But…I’d much rather just finish up WFC, get as many classic characters as we can out of the 3rd and last part (as many mentioned I’d still prefer a futuristic Victory type setting with a mix of Victory, and older characters), then be done. Let the floodgates open in 2022 for BW, and whatever else the fans want. It would be fitting in my eyes.
The one caveat I will throw in is this...If BW characters do end up being included in the 3rd part of the WFC trilogy, then I think the Selects line should be dedicated then, and moving forward, only to original 84-90 characters that hadn't been released previously.
